We could have easily been 9-3. When some coaches are given enough time, they do improve. Not all - I was all for canning Owens when we did. His time was past. I'm not sure we're there yet with JD. LO was always about next year and never seemed to take responsibility for not getting over the hump. It was like ground hog day with him, and if we have another season like this year, I'll be thinking the same about JD.I'm more interested in if JD's the kind of coach (and guy) who is open to learning from his mistakes and gutsy enough to make changes. It appears he is, and is doing so. He's smart enough to get better, we'll just have to see if he's wise enough to be open to what needs to happen - no blinders in analyzing what he's doing. I'm all for moving Morehead down to another position, but it's tough to keep rotating coordinators - remember LO's carousel of DCs?You guys are gonna kill me for this, but I think JD gets two more years, especially if we see improvement next year. KentZip Posted November 25, 2007 Report Posted November 25, 2007 You guys are gonna kill me for this, but I think JD gets two more years, especially if we see improvement next year.I'm not. This is by far more likely given his recent extension. He has shown the ability to learn and adapt at recruiting. As you say, whether or not he can extend that to personnel decisions and on-the-field strategy remains to be seen. He is young and inexperienced. He was brought here more for his upside than his experience. The next two recruiting classes, improvement in X's and O's and the casting of an identity for both the offense and defense will determine how successful we are heading towards the opening of the new stadium. uafan Posted November 25, 2007 Report Posted November 25, 2007 He has shown the ability to learn and adapt at recruiting. How? By saying something? The more and more we have his players playing, the worse we are! And now we are losing Masckey, Arthur, And stokes, to name a few of Owens' recruits. Who will replace them? Quote

Quickzips Posted November 25, 2007 Report Posted November 25, 2007 Can JD.Go out and get Bill Callahan. The guy took Oakland to a Super Bowl not to long ago, but since then he's been put in absolutely horrible positions. He's had to deal with the senial one (aka Al Davis) looking over him. After that he had to try and get the children of the corn<huskers> out of the dark ages of the power option offense and updated into an actual functional system. He could come into Akron for a few years to get his career and this program back on track and he would bring instant credibility on the recruiting trail. His offensive prowess is well documented, but he's put together some nice defenses (save for this year) in his days as well. Quote

Who will replace them?Bringing up the last few Owens recruits doesn't cut it with me. My point was that JD started out down a slippery slope of taking too many chances on athletes who either didn't show up at all, were attitude problems or couldn't cut it in the classroom. I'm of the belief that he has changed course and is looking at better student athletes. His offensive line for next year will be as deep as I have ever seen at the U of A. The defensive line is improving in depth and with contributions from the next one or two classes should be improved (maybe even to the point where we go to a 4-3 alignment. We lose players every year and somehow we miraculously replace them. GP1 Posted November 25, 2007 Report Posted November 25, 2007 Undoubtedly we will hear from JD supporters that "he wears a 2005 MAC championship ring" as if this chant is the ultimate shut up. The championship was a serendipity dunked in extremely good fortune. We were all pleased with the surprise but the more astute Zip football followers knew that "luck" was the prime foundation of the 2005 season; not good coaching, and, only so-so play.I'd like to hear more. What luck? What so-so play calling brough us back from 20 points down in the fourth quarter? Please expand.I would challenge you to find any other season in the history of the MAC (prior to these stupid divisional games rules) when a team went 5-3 in the conference and won the championship. Heck JD's predecessor got fired for going 5-3 in the MAC. We had a three way tie at the top of the East and because of some third tier tie breaker got in. We depended on the failures of other teams and a few back of the books rules. In a court of law, if the Zips were charged with Championship by luck in 2005, it'd be pretty hard to acquit. I really don't see what their record going in to the MACC has anything to do with JD calling a great game in the MACC and them winning. As far as a jury, I guess if the jury was filled with a bunch of little jealous surburbanites, then they probably would be found guilty.Enjoy the memories of the bad old days. At least you guys are gone. Quote
