Zips vs. Can't State

So all humor aside w/ the twins pictures and all. What does everyone think tonight?I took a little detour into the toolshed this afternoon to see what they're thinking about the game. Not too many concrete ideas, but a few guys have posted thoughts on how to beat UA. I don't think they've seen the Zips too much, but we're all amateurs, right? My thoughts:- The Zips must defend agressively and get after the ball. Absolutely NO reason to think that won't happen. I don't remember the last game where the Zips had significan break downs defensively. The last 4 minutes of Winthrop maybe .. but generally they have been either very good, or downright scary on the defensive side of the ball. Keep the defense going, and the game will be in play for the Zips.- Wood must touch the ball early & often. I DON'T think he needs a ton of shots. I DO think he needs touches. It will be interesting to see what Christian does w/ the defense. OU had a little success w/ Leon on Wood 1on1, but Can't State doesn't really have a body with the strength to pull that off. If Wood touches the ball 25 possessions or more, I like the ZIps' chances.- Can't State has to pick their poison. Much has been made here and elsewhere about "the Zips live and die by the three" .. I couldn't disagree more with that statment. The Zips take 3's at the right time. Usually, due to the agressive double teaming of Wood, the 3's are wide open with feet set. A team will shoot 40% when they're open from out there. We're 17 games into the season. It's reasonable to say that our percentage isn't swayed by extraordinarily hot shooting nights .. that's what we shoot. We have good shooters and they're open.- Defensively, I expect KD to let Wood guard Scott, and put Jimmy on Q. Keeps Wood from the early foul trouble inside and puts one of our best defenders on Q. Jimmy doesn't give up too much size / strength wise in that matchup, so I'd take my chances there early on.- On the other end, I think Christian HAS to put Q on Wood. Scott may be too light for that duty, and Parks and Garcia simply aren't in their rotation unless there's big foul trouble about. I would expect the double team to come early and often. This game is won or lost on how well the Zips defend, and whether or not Wood can get the pass out to the open guy, or rotated over to the open guy. Keep the turnovers down and get the ball to the open man. Can't State will have to pick its poison tonight. Let JWood abuse someone in single coverage, or leave a shooter open and hope he doesn't find them. I like our chances.Other thoughts: Top 3 producers from the last trip to the MACC are back (Wood, Dials & Middleton). Linhart is now healthy (not last year) and will play more. Also: Mincy and Scott are the only 2 Can't State players to have beaten the Zips (per Record Courier) .. an amazing stat if you ask me. Tells us alot about the roster stability at Can't.My take: flushes choose to double team Wood early and often. Q plays less than 25 minutes w/ foul trouble. Wood has 5 assists .. Zips hit 9 of 23 from outside. No UA guy has more than 15 points, but 5 guys score 8 or more.Zips 72 - 64Should be a good time .. Go Zips.P.S. Look for OU to drop a game at UB tonight.

Alright..well, one of the big keys for Akron to win is Wood *HAS* to stay out of foul trouble. Ham and Cheese is good on the offensive boards, therefore Wood will have to avoid any unnecessary fouls. Also, If I'm the Zips, I try and get in Singletary's head again. He lost it in Athens, and eventually Christian lost it as well. Technicals would be huge in this game, although they probably aren't likely. Can't's guards are going to be fairly agressive in defending the perimeter and pressuring the ball, so Akron's guards can't get flustered and turn the ball over, otherwise, Can't will win. Score prediction?Akron 78 Can't State -3 :D Serious Score prediction:Akron 74 Can't State 69

The Zip in me wants to say something like Akron-75 Can't-62. A nice decisive victory. The logical part of me says, these two teams are both defensive minded (read: probably not a very high scoring game) and they haven't had anything even close to a blowout in a long time. Home court advantage with Can't, plus motivation on their side from losing 4 straight. Logically I could easily see something like Can't-60 Akron-58.Keys for Akron winning:-Get Wood the ball inside, but also, someone has to step up and help him out down low. If Quade, the McKnights and Bardo all have bad games our chances of winning this one go down significantly.-Protect the ball. Win the turnover battle and we put ourselves at a significant advantage. Dials needs to have one of if not his best game running the point and McNees needs to continue to be effective.-We can't go through long stretches where the 3 ball isn't falling. Sorry Watcher, but I'm still on the wagon that this team needs the 3 ball to be falling to win games. Maybe we don't live and die by it, but it is a huge part of what we do. If the 3's aren't falling it will be tough to walk out of there with a win.

guess this is the official game thread?zippers take a 35-25 lead into the locker room. Sounds like we were getting worked at the beginning but fought back hard to come back. I would have loved to see Jeremiah hit that 3! That's really the spark that lit our three-ball flame.23 turnovers between the two teams, though? McNees needs to get talked to. Good to see Ced fighting back as well after a very slow start.Boy if we can keep the turnovers down I'd say our chances are pretty high at coming out on top.Keep it up boys!! and what would any post in this thread be without the usual :screwks: ??damn I love this pickentfailure.jpg

I said prior to the game that the Zips needed to have someone other than Wood step up inside, they needed to limit turnovers and they needed to hit a good percentage of their 3's.Through one half we are doing 2 of the 3.The McKnights are stepping up very nicely and that really helps take the pressure off of Wood who is playing out of his mind anyways (when was the last time Jeremiah hit a 3 pointer? it happened tonight). We need to cut back the TO's. McNees in particular has been throwing it away all night. The only savior here is that Can't is turning it over just as much if not more. The 3's have been falling as well w/ Dials, Middleton, B.McKnight and, yes Jeremiah Wood have all hit from 3 point land. Keep it up, play that 2nd good half of basketball and let's bring another win home from the MACC.

Another Zips collapse in the 2nd half. This is just ridiculous. I can't believe we blew a 10 point lead at the half and we've been down by as much as 9 this half. We have no inside presence in the 2nd half. Wood has been taken out of his game for whatever reason and noone else is stepping up. Looks like the streak will end at 4.

Why is it that the team that goes in the locker room is so different than the one that comes out of it?10 points lead at half time... doesn't mean anything. we still loose.I feel bad for Dials, he can't win it by himself. J-wood in the second was toughly guarded.Mcneese folded under the pressure. He has nothing to be ashamed of (being his first Can't game) as long as he learns from his mistakes and get ready for the rest of the season. The only two who should be ashamed of themselves IMHO are: Quade and Conyers.

Anyone that Time Warner didn't screw out of seeing that game want to comment on what the hell happened at the end there. I turned it off, then was told that something was going on, turned it back on. French said Quade and Ham-n-cheese were getting into it and a fan got thrown out and another fan got injured and there were technicals and on and on.... Any explination as to what happened?

Frenchie got a way better look than the TV audience. You couldn't see anything. The announcers and their disgusting can't lovefest biased bullshit didn't provide any insight either.<still feeling sick>
