Big Zip
As my ignorance was pointed out in another post -- why does a website like this and a writer from the Beacon Journal seem to follow my same ignorance in thinking the Zips can play in the Silicon Valley Bowl? Someone help me here -- don't teams accept and decline bowl bids every year? Why is it so far fetched to believe the NIU and BGSU will get offered bowls leaving the MAC to select the team going to the Silicon Valley Bowl? I would think this website knows something we don't know. Akron would have to commit to ticket sales -- so what if going to a bowl turned out to be a financial wash. At least the team got to go to a bowl game isn't that something?
Guest Lee Dennison
No. You are still ignorant at that web site is too.
JP Morgan
Akron would have to commit to ticket sales -- so what if going to a bowl turned out to be a financial wash. At least the team got to go to a bowl game isn't that something? YES.....Even if we lose our a$$ financially, its a win for the program. The University needs to look at it not in terms of $$$$$. Spend next years advertising budget if they have to. There's no better advertising and no better recruiting tool than to be able to say we played in a bowl. The dividends will pay off in years to come!
Guest Guest
I don't know how quickly the link at the top of this thread is being updated, but it is literally the only one that predicts the Zips will play anywhere but in the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl. Most of the rest of the bowl predictions have the University of Hawaii in and Akron out. So, the only way Akron gets in is if Hawaii gets knocked off by Michigan State. This is totally unpredictable as MSU is one of the most erratic teams in the country, capable of knocking off top-ranked teams or losing to mediocre teams depending on the phase of the moon. Here's a better bowl prediction chart to follow as it reflects the most current thinking from 4 different experts: http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?page=04bowlpicks
Z-Pouch
As my ignorance was pointed out in another post -- why does a website like this and a writer from the Beacon Journal seem to follow my same ignorance in thinking the Zips can play in the Silicon Valley Bowl? Someone help me here -- don't teams accept and decline bowl bids every year? I think it was referred to as "impaired" but I'm still with you that the Silicon Valley Bowl is in play. If you analyze any bowl prediction boards, it seems Akron, Marshall or maybe Troy will be #57 and left out if Hawaii wins. Unfortunately, majority of "predictors" have Akron as #57. The MAC unknown comes in to play with the Silicon Valley Bowl possibly getting "stuck" with Akron, as BG/NI/Tol/Mia find more attractive places to play (If you're wondering about Marshall -- I doubt it is far fetched the MAC says F-Marshall in the SVC Bowl). Things to think about with regard to the Silicon Bowl -- it is on ESPN 2, Thur at 11PM, the 30th has 5 bowls throughout the day, 7k ticket purchase --- It's not impossible, the other 4 MAC schools find better deals with the slim field this year. Maybe a better payday, maybe ESPN, maybe a better time slot, who knows but there are reasons ?!? In a lot of ways, the Hawaii Bowl (ESPN, 7PM time slot, only bowl that day) may be better then SVC but it sure is risky. I'll agree, it's looking like Hawaii or out, but there could be surprises -- Just watch what BG, NI and Troy do and everything should fall into place. and one last F-Marshall sure would be nice
zipboy
While originally I thought it was far fetched, Big Zip has a good point. If the next 2 at larges from the MAC get good bowl bids, and the MAC/Akron guarantee to cover so much in tickets, why would they not take us? Who cares if Marshall brings an extra 500 people? A 6-5 Marshall team is not wetting too many people's appetitites around the country. And Akron would put a much better showing in for the conference. Marshall fell apart at the end of the year. Come on, they barely beat WMU.
zipsbandman
The buzz at the university is that Akron would most likely play in the SVB, and that would get us in even if we are #57. Don't be suprised if that is the scenario.

Don't be suprised if that is the scenario. =>The person at Miami who is in charge of Alumni gatherings said that Miami is not in the running for the GMAC Bowl. In fact, the deal is if Miami beat Toledo, Miami goes to the MCB. If Toledo wins, Miami goes to the SVB. On the MAC BBS, a Toledo poster wrote that if Toledo would beat Miami they go to MCB and to SVB if they lose. The exact quote from "FredJay": The word out of the Toledo AD's office today is that if Toledo loses on Thursday then the Rockets go to Silicon Valley, otherwise we'll be back up in Detroit for the MCB. Putting 2 & 2 together, it would appear that is it basically in place that the MAC Champ goes to the MAC Bowl and runnerup to SVB. I am guessing BUGS is a lock for GMAC Bowl. As for Akron's bowl hopes, I would be HUGE L'ville and MSU Spartan fans if I were y'all! ****** Relevant MAC BBS Thread "Motor CIty Bowl Taking MAC Champ?" http://www.ncaabbs.com/forums/mac/invision...=ST&f=1&t=16322
mollautt
=>Also of interest from a Herd poster Stick4489... According to local radio show here tonight with Robert Harper and Chuck Landon, Marshall will be invited to the Ft. Worth Bowl as long as Tulane does not upset Louisville this weekend. If Tulane wins, then Marshall will likely not receive a bowl invitation. They said the deal was being worked with the help of C-USA. C-USA would arrange for Marshall to be in the Ft. Worth Bowl as long as Tulane isn't eligible. If Tulane beats Louisville, then C-USA is obligated to help them first. They would arrange a trade that would send Tulane to a bowl other than the Ft. Worth Bowl and Marshall would be out of luck. Tulane would not play in the Ft. Worth Bowl against another C-USA opponent. Cincinnati has already accepted the Ft. Worth Bowl invitation. If what they are saying is true, then we can deduce a couple of things. There are currently 56 teams eligible for 56 spots. Hawaii and Tulane could win and become eligible making 58 eligible teams. 1. If Hawaii and Tulane both win, Marshall and Akron will be the two teams not invited to bowls. 2. If Hawaii wins but Tulane loses Akron is out. 3. If Tulane wins but Hawaii loses, Marshall is out. 4. If both Hawaii and Tulane lose, then the MAC will receive six bowl invitations. All six eligible MAC teams will play in bowls. http://www.ncaabbs.com/forums/mac/invision...=0entry155700

Zips4life
I appears that the Zips will be holding practice tomorrow at 4PM in the complex, and will be practicing for the rest of the week. Maybe they know something we don't??
Z.I.P.
In response to Zips4Life, if that's true, then they MUST know something. My understanding is they canNOT hold more practices unless there is another game. And there are a limited number of practice sessions they are allowed to hold -- I seem to recall it is only 7 or 8, but it may be more. Mahalo for the news. Guest zipsfan38
I believe it was in the ABJ or PD yesterday that a bowl eligible team can still practice until all of the bowl invitations are out and accepted. This gives JD and the staff a chance to keep working on their system and possibly get the young players some reps before winter break. I believe thats the plan, as the older guys will just be working in shorts and helmets while the younger guys scrimmage in full gear. Molluatt- Any chance of Miami opting for the Hawaii Bowl over SVB if they lose to Toledo and Hawaii loses to MSU ? SVBowl seems to be very lowly rated by most. Just wondering if you have heard any talk along these lines. With recent MAC commitments to bowls, it's down to the Hawaii/MSU game for Akron and then up to other teams where we might end up. Leftover spot seems to be in Hawaii as most have been saying all along. Can everyone else hear the Hawaii Bowl committee praying for a Hawaii win ?? I have not heard Hawaii mentioned from anyone connected with Miami be it fan or connection with Miami.
