RECAP:

GMAC Bowl -- Bowling Green (locked in).

Motor City -- Miami/Toledo winnner.

Independence -- Will take either the MACC loser or NIU.

Silicon Valley -- Gets the team left after the Indpendence Bowl picks

crAkron is "still under consideration" elsewhere.

The MAC office today announced that on the 5th the Independence Bowl will pick from available MAC teams (the MACC winner automatically goes to the MCB) for their bowl, with the SVB to pick from what's left.

So, it's officially 5 MAC teams bowling, but to be honest I suspect that if we lose the MACC the Indy Bowl will pick NIU.

Here it is:

Ohhhh! THAT Indy Bowl!

I thought for a second that a certain investor group in Indianapolis had suddenly made an offer the league (or Akron) couldn't refuse.

In actuality, that game (The Indy Bowl in Indy) is probably a couple years away at best. However, all indications are that the MAC will get a third official bowl tie-in (with the Big East as opponent) next season, with the new bowl game in Toronto expected to get NCAA approval in the Spring.

Also: Next year will be another 11-game NCAA FB schedule, so with the current scheduling protocol (schools required 5 1-A home games), we can expect to have pretty much the same results as this year. The only possibility for change in the bowl situation would be the elimination of some bowl games (and additions -- any besides Toronto?). That is possible -- particularly with the Silicon Valley and Hawai'i Bowls possibly both failing to have a "home" team this year. An Akron-UAB matchup in Aloha Stadium would be very fortunate to get 15k in attendance. I suppose they could do like Akron vs Marshall and virtually GIVE away tickets. Actually, I'm sure they will, if necessary, give thousands away to the military and childrens charities.

Hawai'i is now giving big deductions on prices for tickets to the MSU game Saturday -- $10 off tickets regularly priced $22-35 if you bring a toy for Toys for Tots. And season-ticket holders can buy more tix at even lower prices. They're hoping for over 40,000 for the Beat-Akron-out-of-a-Bowl Bowl.

With all the traveling expenses on taking 100-something players and 40 some odd coaches, trainers, and equipment staff to Hawaii for five days, would the University even make money from the $750,000 pay out for the Bowl game??

=>No. All MAC teams will lose money on the bowl games with the possible exception of the Motor City Bowl.

Even the Herdiban had to have their bowl trips subsidized by the other MAC members when they made their bowl trips.

Only 60 players are allowed to travel. If any others want to go, it is on their own dime and they can't suit up. NCAA rules.

There are no restrictions on squad size and going to bowls. most schools take all players, coaches and coaches families plus staff and families. Bowls other than the BCS rarely make any cash and wind up in debt.

I can vouch for Willy (Are you the school janitor on The Simpsons?). The teams that have played in the Hawai'i and Aloha Bowls have always brought big squads -- probably close to 100 players. That's one of the things that caused the brouhaha between the UHs (Hawai'i - Houston) last year, not just so many players, but scads of spectators and hangers-on ready to make trouble. And trouble they had, of the Clemson-USC variety. And even Hawai'i, in their home bowl makes little if any $$.

Everybody travels for Bowl games. The Zips could only take their 60 man travel roster, but that's pretty much unheard of and would look horrible for recruits.
