Zips Scheduling

Screw this idea. You can also screw OSU and all their fans...Unless they are paying me $4 mil to play the game and in my house, I would never play them. ZW quote. If there is one stadium or team that half of Akron's football team would like to play in or against it's OSU. It's also close for Zips fans to enjoy. Year's ago when we moved to IA I heard, from Buckeye snobs like the ones that you must know, that we would never NEVER get the chance to play Ohio State. Well each time we play them I get loads of satisfaction despite the outcome. I love to see Akron's flag flying in the Shoe. We seem to play OSU tough too. The tradition is the greatest there and just maybe we'll shock the world one day. For now we should concentrate on building a winner and respect will follow.

It won't be all that easy getting any BCS teams to come to Akron to play for 25K or less attendance and risk losing (count me as one that thinks the new stadium will give us a whole new attitude when it comes to defending the home turf, like in basketball). They will still want 2 for 1's and it will be hard to negotiate if they can draw 50K or more at their house. Playing a 1-aa gives us a home tuneup game with no return obligation. That's an additional football Saturday in Akron for the students and fans and bars/restaurants and should be a W. Let 10K YSU fans come over and help pay for the Nemer bill. Or get a known name like Georgia Southern or do a basketball tie-in with Southern Ill. or Butler. The AD will have some interesting choices to make. Probably what we'll see is a lot of 1-1's with CUSA and Sunbelt. Marshall, Memphis, ECU, UAB, MTSU, WKU, Troy...

My only argument was that I didn't think we should rule out playing one upper tier BCS school a year for a good payday. Most MAC and non-BCS schools do this, and the financial gain can benefit the program. I don't think that you should schedule more than one per year, and that's the fault that I've seen in recent scheduling. It's not that we are playing upper-tier BCS schools -- it's that we are playing 2 or more of these a year, which dramatically decreases our chances of becoming bowl-eligible. It's like having a couple of guaranteed losses, and then having little room to slip up the rest of the year.
I can agree with an occasional road "payday" BCS game, maybe not one a year but maybe two or three in a four to five year span. I still would like to get more home and homes with mid-level BCS schools and decent non-BCS schools. Even if we can only get a road BCS game without a return game I'd like it to be with an opponent that we have a legitimate chance of knocking off. I actually really like this year's non-conf schedule.

So, what is happening is that the big boys are going to schedule cupcakes early on for the guaranteed W and a payday. We are on that "cupcake" list right now. If we start to improve, we will be avoided. Personally, I think that we would have more success in recruiting and with the fan base if we didn't get our faces kicked in every year and actually went to a bowl game. I think the "Mid-Majors" should tell the big boys to go pound sand and dramatically cut back their charity games. They will not come to Akron. They don't mind paying us huge sums of money as they make way more than we do. We continue to look like a doormat. I think we should schedule one big time opponent every 2 years, and begin to focus on opponents from CUSA, WAC, etc. Bring on YSU too. I would rather have some local excitement generated by having multiple local rivalries than to listen to the Suckeye fans make comments about how bad we get pummeled every year. Bottom line, I just want to see the Zips play football! Right now I have to travel all over the place because we can only get 4-5 games in our home stadium while the big boys get 7 and sometimes an 8th "away" game at a very friendly neutral site  We pimp ourselves out to ESPN which means of those 4 home games, two of them are going to be late in the season on a weeknight, virtually guaranteeing a low turnout and bad weather. :wall::wall::wall:

I'm with you... I'm still pissed that we had to pay Kentucky to release them from a contract that was exactly what we need (home game in series) to pick up a whore game in Wisconsin. Nice job Rhodes. Don't get me wrong, Bain's bunch just might bash in some helmets there, but why Camp Ripoff Wisconsin again. And now I hear talk of another whore game in TN. I really like the teams on our schedule (not the crazy bye weeks and weekday close out at the RB) this year except for the Badgers. I'm calling for all Zips fans at the game in Madison to drink heavy and puke in their stadium. While heaving try to spurt out the word RIPOFF :puke: for all the bad calls.

"Come see the University of Akron Zips take on the College X Piles of Crap at InfoCision Stadium on August #. We know this game is a sham. You know this game is a sham. We know that you know this game is a sham and you know that we know this game is a sham. What do you expect? It's the end of summer, the Indians stink and you people are starving for some football and you know it. Don't pretend you aren't. We have it. You will receive a brand new Terrible Sham Wow (variation of Terrible Towel) at the gate. See you at the game."
in addition, you can do a towel giveaway promotion, but you can call them sham shammies

That wasn't Rhodes' fault. It was Rick Chryst and his scheduling goons in Cleveland.

I heard that too... but our AD should have worked a better deal for our program than just taking a big pay day and loosing a great contract with Kentucky. What is he some kind of victim without any contacts.

These may be the two best marketing ideas in the history of the MAC. I'm not kidding either.
