Did a little digging on this last night. I don't have a link handy at the moment, but a quick google would indicate that if a player suffers a season ending injury BEFORE the halfway point in the season and has played in 20% or less of the teams total season games, he may qualify for a medical hardship year (which is separate from a straight redshirt).

I think the standard redshirt used to be 6 or 8 games, both of which JWood has already played in.

Under NCAA rules, a school can apply for a medical hardship on behalf of a student-athlete if the student-athlete sustains an injury and that injury is such that it prevents them from competing, provided they participate in no more than 20 percent of their team's contests and the injury occurred in the first half of the season.

I posted this on MCAbbs in the Wood thread.

I am sorry to hear about his injury. These guys work too hard and put in too much time and sweat and everything.

It's so disruptive to a team, too. As a former HS coach who once lost for the season his two leading scorers and rebounders in the same game, it always pains me when players go down for the season.
