Guest OLDSCHOOLZIP Posted January 6, 2005 Report Posted January 6, 2005 Based on what you know about the Zips, what do you think the two deep will look like for next year? Here's mine: OFFENSE QB- Luke Getsy, John Ferguson RB- Brett Biggs, Jerrell Ringer/Joe McDaniel FB- Dennis Basch, Joe Tuzze TE- Kris Kasparek, Scott Uziel/Merce Poindexter WR- Domenik Hixon, Johnny Long WR- Jabari Arthur, Brandon Williams WR- Jason Montgomery, Drew Higgins LT- Tim Crouch, Justin Hein LG- Garret Brewster, Scott Kaplan/CJ Gruber C- Mike Schepp, Jim Holley RG- Andy Alleman, Andy Wills RT- Mike Donaldson, Keith Huebner DEFENSE T- Jermaine Reid, Brian White N- Kiki Gonzales, Zach Williams E- Jared Cechetti, Tim Wilkes LB- Jay Rohr, Brion Stokes LB- Diontre Earl, Brian Howe LB- Kevin Grant, Brandon Butler R- Chevin Pace, John Mackey SS- Donte Cloud FS- Dion Elie CB- Devanso Tate CB- Dionte Henry The weakest position to me right now looks like D-line, where there's about 4 guys who can play and be effective. That's certainly not enough and that's why I've been sort of disturbed that JD hasn't gotten any commits on the D-line yet. Quote
UA Fan Posted January 6, 2005 Report Posted January 6, 2005 I guess your not too high on the secondary either, since you couldn't find any 2nd teamers...or was that an oversight? Quote
Guest BZ Posted January 7, 2005 Report Posted January 7, 2005 I think Corner will be a starter at cornerback. Also, I think Dennis Kennedy will be in the mix at RB. Quote
Guest OLDSCHOOLZIP Posted January 7, 2005 Report Posted January 7, 2005 sorry, I forgot to put in my second teams in the secondary. Guys like Corner, Nedd, Vaughns, and Dixon will round out a very talented secondary, and Corner could very well be a starter, but I see Tate beating him out. As for Kennedy, the word out of the fieldhouse is already loud and clear: BUST Quote
Guest ***GUEST_Z.I.P. Posted January 8, 2005 Report Posted January 8, 2005 Okay Mr. Inside Information. That's an interesting remark at the end -- that we haven't heard before. Now please enlighten us further. Who is this fellow who doesn't appear on any rosters I can find who is going to start at corner in the fall? WHO IS DEVANSO TATE? Quote
KentZip Posted January 9, 2005 Report Posted January 9, 2005 If I'm not mistaken, he is a transfer cornerback from West Virginia. Quote
Guest Zipzip Posted January 12, 2005 Report Posted January 12, 2005 I've heard that the Fife kid looked good at TE last year. he must have redshirted though cause I didn't see him listed on any summaries. He was a big kid coming in to the zips, so I'd think he would be #2 TE at least. Anyone have any info on him? There was another kid from PA last year that was a decent recruit on the line (I think) Quote

Here's mine: OFFENSE QB- Luke Getsy, John Ferguson RB- Brett Biggs, Jerrell Ringer/Joe McDaniel FB- Dennis Basch, Joe Tuzze TE- Kris Kasparek, Scott Uziel/Merce Poindexter WR- Domenik Hixon, Johnny Long WR- Jabari Arthur, Brandon Williams WR- Jason Montgomery, Drew Higgins LT- Tim Crouch, Justin Hein LG- Garret Brewster, Scott Kaplan/CJ Gruber C- Mike Schepp, Jim Holley RG- Andy Alleman, Andy Wills RT- Mike Donaldson, Keith Huebner DEFENSE T- Jermaine Reid, Brian White N- Kiki Gonzales, Zach Williams E- Jared Cechetti, Tim Wilkes LB- Jay Rohr, Brion Stokes LB- Diontre Earl, Brian Howe LB- Kevin Grant, Brandon Butler R- Chevin Pace, John Mackey SS- Donte Cloud FS- Dion Elie CB- Devanso Tate CB- Dionte Henry The weakest position to me right now looks like D-line, where there's about 4 guys who can play and be effective. That's certainly not enough and that's why I've been sort of disturbed that JD hasn't gotten any commits on the D-line yet. 1.) Everything I've heard is Shoemaker looks to be the #2 guy going into this season? 2.) Dennis Basch moving to FB? Makes sense, since JD likes throwing to the FB. Dennis is a big kid too. it would be nice for Getsey to have Basch and Kasparek on the field at the same time. 3.) Everything I hear is that Drew Higgins is not in the mix at WR. Look for Long to have a break out year in 2005. 4.) Now that Zach Anderson's in the fold, pencil him in at #2 OL somewhere. Maybe #1. 5.) Based off last season's PT, I'd expect Stokes to start over Grant? Is Butler that highly thought of? I've never seen him play, so I don't know. 6.) Parris McNeal going to get another shot at Safety? 7.) Kicker: Swiger. Word is the transfer kicker from Wisconsin is no threat to Swiger's job. Quote

Terriko Marshall from Maple Heights is supposed to be a good prospect for us on the d-line. We have a verbal from him in the 2005 class. I hope we can get a few more too. Quote

In response to what you said: 1) From what I've heard, Shoemaker is the smarter of the two and makes better throws but Ferguson has the cannon arm and has a great deep ball. It'll be an interesting battle for the #2 spot. I have heard though that Ferguson is looking into transferring 2) Last season with Dan Basch was battling injuries and Tetzel had a few as well, Brookhart was very close to making the midseason switch for Dennis Basch to FB, since Kasparek was playing so well. With both Tetzel and the older Basch gone now, it makes sense to me that Basch would go ahead a swtich to FB so we could utilize both him and Kasparek in our base offense, but we'll see. Maybe Tuzze will come into camp and blow the coaches away, and Basch will stay at TE 3) I've heard that Higgins has been nothing but a problem since he got to Akron, but he's got good size, speed, and hands, and I'm hoping he can pull things together this offseason. We're really going to need him. And I agree with you about Long. He could end up starting before the season is done. Look out for Brandon Williams as well. 4) You could be right about Anderson, but Brookhart likes big lineman, and he may need to bulk up a little bit. 5) The reason that Grant will start over Stokes is simply because Grant has the size to play the Bandit spot (6-2 235) where he'll have to occasionally line up on the D-line like Blackburn did, whereas Stokes will be stuck behind Diontre Earl and Jay Rohr at the other two spots. As for Butler, at the one preseason scrimmage I saw during camp, he seemed like he was in the backfield all the time and had a nose for the ball (I hadn't heard his name much before that either). I've heard that the coaches like him and his dad is a former NFL linebacker. So we'll see on him. 6) Parris McNeal has fallen out of favor with the coaches after his one disastorous start at Penn State, and from what I've heard guys say he's not very well liked by his teammates either. He's a physical freak but doesn't have what it takes upstairs. I'd be very surprised to see him take on a significant role next year but I guess anything's possible. 7) I haven't heard much about the Wisconsin transfer, but Swiger's so inconsistent, I was kind of hoping that he'd pan out and take his job. I gotta give Swiger the love for that kick against Marshall to win it all (though he kind of negated my love with his misses against Miami) but if the other guy doesn't pan out I'd like to see Billy Sullivan back place kicking again, since I hear there's a freshman punter that isn't bad. Sullivan is out of this world and we need a guy with that kind of leg and conistency handling our kicking duties. Quote

There was another kid from PA last year that was a decent recruit on the line (I think) If Basch stays at tight end, that'll mean we'll have him, Kasparek, and two great signees in Poindexter and Uziel. Also, Richard Spaulding saw some action at tight end last year, though I don't know if he'll be staying at tight end or not. That said.....Fife will never see the field. Quote
Guest Zip '82 Posted January 20, 2005 Report Posted January 20, 2005 I hear what you are saying about the TE position, but where do you get that Uziel and Poindexter are better than Fife? Look at their senior year stats and Fife blows them away hands down. I see one of the new guys (I forget which one based on size) being bulked up and moving to the OL or DL. It will be interesting what JD has planned for this position. Quote

Maybe he is going to contribute. Also, add another TE to the mix....Eric Lively is enrolled in Akron for the spring semester and will be in Spring ball. Quote

He had second thoughts and went MIA at the beginning of camp but later decided to join the team for the winter semester as a gray shirt. He's now on the team and working out, and that's a good thing for the Zips. It'll be interesting to see how the Tight End position pans out and who gets moved where. Quote
Guest OLDSCHOOLZIP Posted January 21, 2005 Report Posted January 21, 2005 Anyone else wanna project a 2 deep?? That was kinda the point of this thread, lol. Quote
Guest ***GUEST_SoFlaZip*** Posted January 22, 2005 Report Posted January 22, 2005 What's the criteria for a gray shirt? Have not heard that term before. Quote
Guest BZ Posted January 22, 2005 Report Posted January 22, 2005 A gray shirt is when you accept a scholly, but not until the following year. You pay for your first year, but are promised to go on scholly the next year. Some schools use this when they are full on schollys, but someone badly wants to come that should have a scholly. Quote
