Xavier's Mark Lyons not returning for senior season.

He's eligible to play immediately if he graduates like he's supposed to.

I would take him on the Zips in a second! He averaged 15 a game for X? Isn't that more than any of our players ppg?

But I doubt he would want to play in Akron, where we already have guys fighting for playing time. Also doubt KD would want him.

Lyons is a heck of a player that could easily play at any major program. Wishful thinking about him coming to Akron, not going to happen.

I'm really pleased that the Zips landed an ex-Xavier guard with three years of eligibility who is a team player fully capable of averaging 15 points per game if that's what the coach asked of him. Brian Walsh is an honor student of high character who has not had the kind of "on and off-court issues throughout his career" that would cause a coach to drop him from the team for the betterment of the team.

Give me more Brian Walshes and let Can't go after the Mark Lyons.

fyi. It is not a guarantee that Brian Walsh has 2 years left. He still has to petition the NCAA for the 2013-14 season. It is not a done deal.

Considering that he has the best academics on the team, I think he'll earn it.

Again, "think" what you want, but academics has nothing to do with it.

UA is pretty conservative with their claims, and this is what Walsh's official bio has to say on gozips.com:

A physical guard ... a solid shooter ... practiced with the team during the 2010-11 season after sitting out due to NCAA Transfer guidelines ... will have three years of eligibility with the Zips beginning in the 2011-12 season.

Just to be clear, academics have never been an issue with Walsh. He played in Xavier's first nine games in the 2008-2009 season before going down with a season-ending injury. He came back from the injury to play in 21 games for Xavier during the 2009-2010 season. He then transferred to UA and sat out the 2010-2011 season.

If UA is listing him with three years of eligibility to play for the Zips, it is likely because he has already received an NCAA medical hardship waiver for a fifth playing season based on his season-ending injury early in the 2008-2009 season at Xavier. I don't believe that UA would list him with three years of eligibility if they only thought he might get that waiver.

I think since that fat dude from WMU transferred to Xavier....name was Skidmark or something? Lyons figured he wasn't going to get any more playing time.

UA will still need to petition for a 6th year and that cannot be done until after the 2012-2013 season. Based on previous NCAA rulings, there is strong possibility that the NCAA won't grant him an additional year.

This is what KD told a ZN.o forum member about Walsh's eligibility at UA:

According to a recent discussion with KD, Walsh is playing as a sophomore.
That means he has three years eligibility at Akron. .....

Lyons was supposedly a "cancer" at X this past year. UA should avoid him.

You can classify him as whatever you would like at the moment, but he has not been granted a 6th year of eligibility yet. You have 5 years to play 4, so any petition will need to be made after he completes his 5th year. Since you only get one redshirt, its a matter of proving that 2 of those years missed were beyond the players control. The NCAA has previously ruled that missing a year due to transfer does not fall in the category of being beyond the players control. Don't be shocked if he isn't granted a 6th year.
