72 Roo Posted October 30, 2009 Report Share Posted October 30, 2009 The news you relayed is exciting, but let's take it with a huge grain of salt. I doubt it is possible to build the new stadium and have it ready for next season. The field needs to be moved to make room for the grandstand. Sewer, water, irrigation, electric and drain lines all have to be built from scratch under the new field. The turf on the the new field has to be layered to create the best drainage and surface. From what I heard, the new stadium was a two year project: one year to relocate the field, landscaping and lights and the following year to build the grandstand. Total cost approx. $12 million. Rumors like this are great because they are evidence of a strong following for Zip soccer. You can bet that AD Tom W. knows he has to capitalize on our success this year to make the stadium a reality. Caleb Porter is the hottest coach in the NCAA. He has and will continue to receive offers from many programs with deep pockets. Only 1.7 million to demolish 20000 seats at the Info and expand the lower bowl for soccer? The hard part will be getting people to go to the Old soccer stadium to watch the football team play! From what the RFQ stated the 1.7 million is for moving the pitch, doing embankments around the pitch, setting up a perimeter and having general seating for around 3700. It is specifically listed as Phase I and states that the completed project must allow for the building of locker rooms, concessions and a few other things that would allow it to be used during softball and baseball season (fan plaza type deal). And I have been getting under his skin for the last couple of years....sending him e-mail links to stories, such as when we beat OSWho in the NCAA tournament last year, and when we beat them this year, and when those rankings come out every week.It's funny that the only thing he can say right now is..."you don't want to go into the NCAA tournament undefeated". And I laughed. What a great position to be in...right? The only negative thing anyone can say right now about our dominant soccer season is THAT. What a great position we are in right now. I'm even thoroughly enjoying sending him e-mails saying things like, "it's funny how you folks down there in Cowlumbus spend more money on athletics than any school in the country, and you can't beat little ole Akron". I'm lovin it. I'm ready to take a trip to Raleigh. Let's keep this thing going, and get every bit of enjoyment we can from the fact that we have the best soccer team in the state, and the country right now. All the discussion I've had with Caleb and his assistants is that the field will move closer to the student union to make room for a future grandstand, but rotating it 90 degrees is not under consideration. So, in all likelihood, UNC is likely going to finish the regular season with justtwo loses. Thereby allowing the bastardized so called association of collegiate athletics (coff, coff)to crown UNC as the number one team in the nation.You see, kidz, it all works out. That makes the Zips the first place team in the Big Ten. The Zips have already clinched the regular season title in the Big Ten. They still have to beat Hartwickto clinch in the MAC.Northern Illinois has a regular season win over Wisconsin. That means that Wisconsin will get an at largebid because if its conference affiliation while NIU stays home.
