some do yes, but most probably do this stupid shit without even thinking of their athlete status. if you look at the same type of crimes being committed by the "average" college student, you'd notice that anything involving athletes is reported on much more. then people start getting that anti-jock attitude and incorrectly use it against all athletes, when just like the general student population 95% of the people would never do this.

i don't remember this. anybody else remember this?

Lifelong dreams of Walking on for UA Volleyball?
zippyrifle32 replied to ZachTheZip's topic in Other Sports
after meeting arenz myself i'm excited to see how volleyball does this season. seems like a really good guy and the team seems to have responded well to him.also, being out of state walk-ons... man that's going to be one hell of a bill for the parents. out of state tuition is more than double in state tuition, then times that by two people  -
Good point, the only coverage of that I saw was on GoZips.com.Congratulations again to both the Men and Women's Track teams. 2008 MAC Champions!!!!!Here's a marketing idea for track & cross country "Run with the Roo" or switch out "with" with "like" or drop that all together and do fundraising 10k "Run the Roo"i've seen track members with shirts that say "AKRUN". i asked one of my track friends where they get them because i would like one, but i guess they only do ordering for the team. still, i like the play on words.

i dunno, the way i see it is by constantly saying "this is your team" people start to believe it. it gives people a sense of ownership and like they're a part of something which then instills a sense of pride and support. that is what this city needs after all. people ask why should i support the zips? well it's your team. just my opinion.

sorry i don't know how to get it to play in the post

yeah it's the same catch phrase, but it's for different events. the reality is they need something short and sweet to get people to be excited and feel a need to go. be a part from the start taps into those aspects. What about "roo town" or "this is your... (team, stadium, etc)"?

Zeke Marshall Verbal commitment!

Sounds like something Rydell Brooks probably considered at some point?rydell wouldn't have made it. he can't grasp simple gun safety rules like don't at shoot people. -

you think you want to get back on topic but your words say you want to debate the merits of rifle as a sport. anyways, zeke couldn't do both. rifle goes from september to march and conflicts often with bball. -

Sorry to turn Zeke's thread into a rifle thread but...I know of three recruits. Sarah Benjamin from Vermont I know personally and she will be a great addition to the team. Former team member Martha Carpenter ('04-'05) was from the same junior club in Burlington. All around she will be a great asset to the team and Akron is lucky to get her. The other two are guys from the Frazier-Simplex club from Pennsylvania. I don't know them personally but am familiar with other shooters who hailed from that club. It is a very good and well known (nationally) junior club. One is Joel Nuzum and I think the other is Ryan Stein. According to USA Shooting, Nuzum is ranked #56 in the nation in men's air rifle, #41 in men's 3-p, and #39 in men's prone. In the 2008 Junior Olympics he placed #23 in 3-p, #36 in prone, and #52 in air rifle. Stein is ranked #101 in the nation in men's air rifle and #94 in men's 3-p. Benjamin is ranked #71 in the nation in women's air rifle and #66 in women's 3-p.Other notable rankings of current team members:Senior Andrew Castano is ranked #16 in men's prone, #111 in 3-p, and #117 in air rifle. Sophomore Brittany Jones is ranked #108 in women's air rifle and #109 in 3-pSophomore Rebecca Gerevics is ranked #70 in women's air rifle USAS national rankings are based on averages shot in USAS sanctioned matches (thus why only a few team members are ranked, many don't shoot USAS sanctioned matches). They also include all ages where the Junior Olympics only allow junior shooters (shooters 20 and under) to compete. -

Forget soccer and bball, lets get that rifle dynasty started. good luck with that. if i was a betting person i would put my money on soccer first.Well I really doubt you follow what is going on with the rifle team so allow me to enlighten you. The rifle team is almost busting at the seems with freshman this upcoming year. There are are three major shooters being recruited that will bolster the team in a major way and another walk on that is anticipated to be a big addition to the team. If a dynasty is going to be started, it looks like this this next year is the most likely time for it to start happening. Another point is with rifle it takes fewer members to mae up a team, so one better shooter does a lot more for the team than one person on a basketball team.you're right. i just finished 4 years on the team and don't know what the hell is going on. good luck this year. i would love to be proven wrong -
there's a new podcast interview of mack on gozips and he specifically addresses the loss of scholarships among other things. kinda makes me worry about women's basketball now.

for me this is true as well, except when you are in high school or work for a high school (coach, ad, other teacher/administrator) it's really all you got. i personally have nothing invested, but i can understand why it is such a big deal to the people it actually affects. -

i admit, i stopped reading after the second page because all i see is a bunch of bitching. this is an argument that is brought up back home as well (private school graduate from oregon). i know my school didn't recruit nor did they offer scholarship to play. what i found is that people who can afford to send their kids to private schools also have the money to send their kids to more sport camps, hire private coaches, and provide more resources that can make their kids better players. they also have the money to donate to the sport programs their kids participate in which only adds to the resources that are not available to many public school teams. success then breeds success. i don't know if here in ohio they offer athletic scholarship, but i doubt it. the schools probably offer financial aid, but because it is offered to anyone below a certain income level it can't really be classified as an athletic scholarship. -
Prep Schools and NCAA eligibility...
zippyrifle32 replied to FromdaBurgh's topic in Akron Zips Basketball Recruiting
on the one hand, i think it's sad that they are basically calling this kid a liar but on the other hand, in big name sports people will do whatever they can to get ahead. i guess if it wasn't for the extreme differences in his two scores than i would say the ncaa is wrong for asking him to retake it. however, if he scores good again than it really says something about the type of education he received, both pre and post prep school. -
he graduated the same ceremony as me, may 11th

Wow, first Andrew Moss, now Rydell Brooks

then in all reality it's a good thing he got caught before doing something else, possibly worse. firing a gun at the police? he's lucky he isn't dead. -

obviously you aren't aware of what is going on in the athletic department. like i said before, maybe you should take a closer look -

what has mack done to make you think he's using the university as a stepping stone?i think you're giving too much credit to mike thomas. if everything with the stadium was set in place before he left, why didn't we break ground under him? fund raising has gone up i believe, overall the department is growing (adding women's golf), as an athlete i know that there has been some reform in the rules such as a stricter class attendance policy and changes in academic support, and then there's that whole isp deal. that's just off the top of my head. maybe someone else can clarify: although the ad helps with the football schedule, i thought the bball coaches do their own.
