2013 MAC Men's Basketball Tournament
originalrowdy replied to originalrowdy's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
This may seem conspiracy theory, but: Does the Mid-American Conference want its NCAA tourney representative to be a team in which all the media talks about is how its PG "drug dealer" was arrested and they still managed victory? My thoughts: no way. The MAC does not want the only media attention its teams get to be synonomous with drugs, alcohol, whatever. And admittedly, we are not the same team that could "make a deep run" w/out AA, so our value is lost on them there. Just a discussion point until our big night tonight. (and in case we see obvious one-sided refereeing tonight ) -

This is a HOT HOT HOT Can't team we are playing tomorrow. Beating them would be great preparation for a tough OU squad. -

Buffalo looks like they are playing for a larger purpose here. Almost as if this is their year. I'm scared. -

Can't and, surprisingly, Buffalo both look good early on. Nice ball movement, both teams driving and not settling for outside shots, tough on the boards. My guess is the fatigue will set in late first half, or in the second half. -

I don't think they will given the aforementioned fatigue factor, but a Buffalo win tonight earns them the title of best #8 seed the MAC has ever seen. I don't see Regan having another game like yesterday for the rest of this tourney though. -
So sorry if this thread exists somewhere. Couldn't find one. Good one here b/w Buff and Balls Tate at 42 all. No sign of fatigue for Buffalo. I see them coming out on top here. Can't should take care of business against either though.

True, he faces a lot of trouble. But for the sake of clarity, the package did NOT need to be shipped across state lines to qualify for federal charges. The fact that he used the mails at all gives the feds jurisdiction to prosecute as well.

Detroit and MT fell in their respective conferences. MT is getting an at-large, so someone's bubble just busted. NDSU is hanging in there in the Summit, with a tough matchup with W. Ill. Not sure where to come out on the Gonzaga-SMU game today. I'd honestly consider rooting for SMU as a bubble team fan hopeful.

According to the arrest ticket, Abreu admitted after being given Miranda warnings (i.e., you have the right to remain silent blah blah blah) that he had the drugs shipped. Not good for the defense attorney in presenting a case.
-
If the prosecution uncovered exonerating evidence that Abreu was truly innocent and there was a major misunderstanding, the Ohio Rules of Professional Responsibility require him or her to immediately produce it and, in all likelihood, a court sua sponte ("on its own motion") would immediately dismiss the case against him. This can happen any time before scheduled hearings.... but yes, one in a billion shot.

2. The NCAA tournament selection committee may have a tough choice with Akron if the Zips don't win the MAC tournament now that point guard Alex Abreu is suspended due to possession and marijuana trafficking. If Abreu is done, then the Zips aren't the same team that dominated the MAC. The committee can evaluate Akron with a home game against Can't State on Friday night and then in the MAC tournament. Losing Abreu shouldn't be the reason Akron is kept out of the tournament if it doesn't win the conference tournament. If it were a major injury -- as in the case of Kentucky's Nerlens Noel -- then the committee has to evaluate the team as it is constituted going into the NCAA tournament. The hope is that the committee gets a chance to see the team prior to Selection Sunday. The pressure is on Akron now to prove it is still worthy. See: http://espn.go.com/blog/collegebasketballn...not-talking-yet IMHO, that was well said.

We will very likely hear nothing more unless Abreu, on his own volition, feels the need to force it out. The ONLY thing coming out of a defendant's mouth in an arraignment is: guilty, not guilty, or no contest. (or I need a lawyer appointed for me since I'm poor)

Truth. Uphill battle from this point out, no doubt.

+1 And why I never watch news anymore. I guess when Mom told me "No news is good news" she knew what the hell she was talking about.

Police need enough evidence, called probable cause, to arrest someone. PC is defined as a 'fair probability' that a crime was committed and that the person arrested is the one that committed it. This is a low standard to achieve, so yes, by no means is this a conviction. A finding of guilty requires 'beyond a reasonable doubt'. Presume innocence. My problem is that, innocent or not, this is a major distraction for a team already dealing with high expectations and unprecedented media attention. The timing of all this just couldn't be worse.

I'm telling you from my professional experience, for law enforcement to pull that bust off would require that Abreu and whoever he dealt with to have done this for quite some time. This is not a one-time thing and Abreu got unlucky. He would have had to do this multiple times and they have been tracking him. I'm worried that if he got nailed, whether he involved any teammates.
-
The lawyer in me was curious, so based on the code Abreu was charged with (the second count), this is what the law reads: (d) If the amount of the drug involved equals or exceeds one thousand grams but is less than five thousand grams, possession of marihuana is a felony of the third degree, and division © of section 2929.13 of the Revised Code applies in determining whether to impose a prison term on the offender. That is a BIG TIME sting operation you guys. Abreu was definitely doing this for some time prior to this sale being set up.

Akron [24-5 (14-1), RPI: 49, SOS: 150] The Zips have had an excellent season, and are very much in the running for an at-large berth, but they have some of the same issues as the other mid-majors on this list -- a conference populated mostly by cupcakes, a dearth of quality wins and so on. The advice for all is to win the conference tournament, many of which are under way this week. See: http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/bubblewatch?id=148 Who would've thought? Still in the talks. Either way, let's just win the MACC.
-
...AND if some of ZN have some glimmer of hope (not I) that we can get an at-large bid.
-
As I stated later last night, I believe Can't has LOCKED up the #4 seed. They are on our side of the bracket guaranteed. My BIG concern is Buffalo - who can get the #5 seed with a Win + EMU loss. If either Buffalo (is in Canada) loses OR EMU wins, then EMU is the #5 seed. All the rest of the teams filter out the remaining seeds. I know I'd rather play EMU than Buffalo, who also played us tough in our house.
-
Looks like Princeton is walking away with the Ivy auto bid after Penn's upset over Harvard. Always nice to see teams in the dance we beat during the season.
-
It appears, regardless of the rest of the week, seeds 1-4 are locks. 1 - UA 2 - OU 3 - WMU 4 - Can't
-
At-large talk was nice. Time to win the MACC.
-
We really need to score on every possession. And some freakin' stops would be nice!!!
