Both the recent transfers feel like a coach making space for instant contributors. Only worry is we will become a team that reloads every year. Is that a good thing… maybe… maybe not. I think this is just the future of college basketball and JG is on the train, and not getting pasted by.

as for our new roster opening. Stretch 4 is #1 need but I would take a 7 footer who bangs.

I actually think we have a decent amount of shooters

It would suck to not have. GT type at our school anymore. Someone who stays for 4-5 years.

But JG clearly refuses to let Akron fade into irrelevance and if it means rebuilding every year then sign me up

Just curious, but why? I don't know anything about the kid, but last 2 years averaged 3.5 and 6.4 min/game with 0.6 and 1.7 ppg. What am I missing?

You’re missing absolutely nothing. I simply love his name, we are connected to him, and he’s a P6 talent. I thin JG coaches up talented players about as well as anyone in America.

  3. A lot of complaining in this chat comparing to haydays of Akron. I graduated in 23’ and loved all four years. Akron isn’t Harvard, OSU, hell even OU, but its the charm of going to Akron and loving the Akron experiences that make it special.

The city is growing and recovering from COVID, a young mayor that seems to care, and a president that has gotten us back to a stable situation.

    We are seeing positive changes!

  4. At this point if JG leaves I will have no ill will and nothing but an incredible amount of thankfulness.

Will it suck? Is it possible? Both yes. Would I blame him? No.

He's had chances to leave and hasn’t, Akron fits him well. The school loves him, he seems to love the school.

IF he leaves, I want Ford as our next guy!

The Tequila and Tipoff event must not be receiving much of a response as I have now received 4 emails about it.  I suspect people don't want to pay $70 to get 4 samples of tequila and finger food on a Tuesday night in December.

I just wish we would spend money on things for more actual fans.

It looks like the game is being streamed on the mountain west network at 10 eastern and it looks like it is a free stream.  Lets hope we play better than last week.  I know that Groce always stresses toughness.  I cannot say that this team is a very physical team.  We are athletic but not very strong.  If we are not a physical team, we better be able to shoot from outside.

Game plan is simple. Play like the Akron Zips and be smart.

Some bad news in this article. If he only needs 8 credits to graduate and isn’t set to graduate until the spring, the U most not be offering a class he needs this semester.

without knowing full details in either situation, sure seems like BS that Aziz would get cleared but not Ali. Who did he have any sort of relationship with at Cinci!?

I don’t think this is necessarily bad news.

What is bad news is that a young man is suffering from mental health issues and the NCAA doesn’t care. That is despicable.

I would have to agree with @zipsrowdy88 I do agree that Charles has been an overall successful hire as AD. He does talk a big talk at times, and that is okay, but it isn't always backed up, which still is a normal thing for anyone to do.

With the OSU game situation, I don't think most people would care if we were to be playing on the road against Fill in the Blank P5 school and it got moved to OSU. If we are being realistic, Kentucky probably was never going to come to Akron, the timing of the move seems unfortunate.

I haven't lived in Akron long, never seen a game at the Rubber Bowl or the Acme Zip game, but it doesn't take much to see that Akron does not support the Zips. There are many avenues UA can go to get more local support and hopefully they are trying it. And most people do say that winning is the cure all to athletic problems, I wouldn't say that is the only remedy look at soccer attendance and basketball attendance, consistently good programs for years and still it isn't a crowd of 5k people every night.

It has to take a lot of change to get to the level a lot of us want to see, but we are still a MAC school in one of the greatest pro sports markets for fans in the country, with one of the top 5 greatest college football programs an hour and a half away. I hope we can improve, and it seems like we have in terms of an athletic department so far. Either way it isn't going to stop me from supporting the Zips

Great point on the soccer and basketball attendance.

Last year we HOSTED A NCAA TOURNAMENT GAME and had less than 500 people in attendance. Yeah, it was cold. Really cold. But good fan-bases show up. No reason for our basketball team to not have great turnouts each game, actually pretty insane how empty that arena is.

Yeah, some of it is on marketing, student turnout, etc. But a lot of it is just simply lack of caring. It’s pathetic and annoying as a true fan, but it is what it is.

  9. That post by that article (behind a paywall, because of course), drives me absolutely insane. Charles Guthrie is the only reason that this athletic department is alive right now. Say whatever you want about him and his tactics, attitude, ignorance to things, but he’s the reason that:

    1. John Groce is on the length of contract he is, we haven’t lost assistant coaches, and we have had recent continued basketball success (I know it started before him, etc)

    2. Our football team even had HOPE of being decent (anyone with a brain thought Morehead was a home run hire, it just didn’t work out, not his fault)

    3. We are starting to see success in other sports (VB, Softball, Track/XC)

That article headline is such a stupid grab for attention. What he is saying is that while the MAC gets a boatload of money for midweek MACTION games, it’s horrible for attendance. He is quite literally saying what all of us have said, that we need to think out of the box. He said the Florida comment which was dumb, but hey, why not? Might be as may fans down there as there are up here.

What people just refuse to acknowledge is that AKRON DOESNT SUPPORT THE ZIPS. All of the pictures from back in the day with packed stands were either from: A game with free tickets, the opener of the season, or some special high school game.

People in this area love HS football teams, the browns, and Ohio State (which is dumb because 90% of them didn’t graduate from there, sue me).

Yes, the Zips are horrible, so bad, it makes me sad every morning, BUT, Charles is simply trying to stay relevant. The game day experience is horrible i know, and good teams fix this, but lets not act like he is some horrible athletic director for being smart and taking a $1,000,000 payday to avoid losing by 40 at home to UK.

Would love to hear thoughts on this.

  10. Not sure why anyone would have expected anything different. Pathetic excuse of a football "program". I'll always watch and stick around, always support. But im not sure why I would even think about buying any Akron merch, tickets, donations, etc. in this holiday season. I know they dont care, but show me success then i'll buy bakc in financially. Until then we'll always be the pathetic football school in the corner of Ohio.

St Bonnie holds off Oklahoma State after a 3 rims out to win it. Following up their loss to Canisius.

This is a huge deal. Keeps them as a HOPEFUL quad 1 game when the end of the year comes. They lose to a weird MAAC school every year, but that’s a great bounce back game for us.

A USM fan from their Eaglepost Facebook page (in response to someone saying USM sucks)...

"No way, Akron is a surefire NCAA team, probably a sweet 16 team and an outside shot at the final four. There's no reason to be alarmed I mean we had it within one point with like 5 minutes to go. Plus we're still feeling the effects of the Tyndall era and all the scholarships we lost"

I would give my right testicle to win one (1) NCAA tournament team. Don’t ask what I would do to make a final 4.
