  5. Zips win in a rout against Bobcats Akron trounces Ohio to take over second place in the MAC East By Darnell Mayberry Beacon Journal staff writer ATHENS, OHIO - A game featuring two teams fighting for sole possession of second place in the Mid-American Conference East Division figured to be a little more closely contested. A contest it never was, as the University of Akron walked into the Convocation Center and abruptly manhandled Ohio University en route to a 69-49 win. The margin of victory was a pleasant change for the Zips after their past three games were decided by a combined seven points. The win improved the Zips to 15-7, 9-5 and locked up a second-place slot behind East leader Miami (16-6, 11-3). The victory was Akron's eighth in the past 10 games and assured the Zips of a winning season. ``We're still unsatisfied,'' said Akron forward Romeo Travis, who finished with 11 points, six rebounds and five blocks. ``It ain't over. Second place is the first loser. We haven't done anything.'' Ohio, which suffered its first defeat at home to fall to 10-1, dropped to 13-9, 8-6 and into a third-place tie with Can't State. The Zips forced the Bobcats into a horrid shooting night in which they were 5-of-31 in the first half (16.1 percent). It was evident that they would be in for a long night when they missed their first 10 shots and turned the ball over four times in the first six minutes. It never got better for the Bobcats, as negative numbers poured in. For starters, the Zips led by as many as 30 points several times. The Bobcats shot a season-low 30 percent, besting their previous mark of 37.7 percent when they played at Rhodes Arena. Their 49 points were also a season-low, and they didn't make a 3-pointer for the first time in five seasons. ``This is a hard place to win,'' said Akron coach Keith Dambrot, who wasn't comfortable with the lead. ``I'm thinking they were going to make a run at it. We have to start thinking a little more arrogantly and have even better belief in ourselves.'' Akron used the Bobcats' inefficiency to jump to a 14-0 lead with 14:08 left in the first half. The Bobcats didn't score their first basket until 13:44 on a Mychal Green layup. Ohio only hit four more field goals, as the Zips took a 39-15 lead by halftime. ``I think we lost some energy when nothing would go in the basket,'' Ohio coach Tim O'Shea said. ``It snowballed. We just had nothing going tonight. The stat sheet from an offensive standpoint is a nightmare.'' The Bobcats went 0-for-15 from the 3-point line and 13-for-23 from the free-throw line. Bubba Walther scored a game-high 14 points to lead four Zips in double figures. Rick McFadden scored 12, and Darryl Peterson, who didn't play against Toledo, added 11. Another positive sign for the Zips was their ability to close out the game, unlike past games when they built large leads only to watch them dwindle. ``That was good,'' Akron Dambrot said. ``I thought we maintained it pretty well.'' Akron will play host to Niagara on Saturday before returning to MAC play against Miami next Wednesday. Red-hot Zips' youth outclasses Bobcats' youth Thursday, February 17, 2005 Elton Alexander Plain Dealer Reporter Athens, Ohio- Ohio University showed its men's college basketball youth Wednesday night and it wasn't pretty. But that was of no concern to the University of Akron Zips, who also showed their youth and cruised to a 69-49 victory over the Bobcats and into sole possession of second place in the MAC East Division race. If the rest of the league has been overlooking the Zips, it had better take notice now. It's the Zips' second win in three days and the eighth win in their last 10 games.
  6. In the post game show, they mentioned both Elton and Darnell (ABJ) were there. ABJ must really be on the bandwagon to send someone to an away game !!!! It is a step forward for ABJ and PD to send reporters but rumor has it they had to carpool and Elton had to drive....
  7. Hmm. By that statement, I can only take that to mean you don't know anything about Ohio. Just like you, we're young. Just like you, our top scorer is a junior, and the best overall player is a sophomore. We've also got two freshman that have been playing very well this year. We're also "poised to take off," and I expect Akron and Ohio to be the class of the MAC East for the next couple years. Like you said, you're injured and we're hot and incredibly hard to beat at home. You guys just lost to Can't- we beat Miami. You're coming off one day of rest after a tough overtime game while we have three days. It's going to be you that's going to need to work your butts off, because we're going to make sure you're sucking wind early and often. That said, you guys always play us tough. I know it isn't easy, but I'm fulling expecting a W. Ozone... this Zips team thrives in adversity... go ahead,, Tell them they can't win.. It will just prvode more motivation.... We know plenty about Ohio.. 71-59 earlier this year. Actually, if I were a Bobcat fan, I'd be worried about over-confidence... 11 game home win streak, Zips are injured.. etc... The pressure is on Ohio to hold home court. The Zips bring it every nite and tonite is no different... Go Zips!! Rock the Convo!!

  11. Nice to see two articles on the front page along with big color picture of MC going for the ball...BUT... Bandwagon comment above is right.... TP sees UA building something in both basetball and football and he doesn't want to be left out.... The telling comments in the story are highlighted below... Worthy of attention? Where has the Beacon been?? Covering the Golden Flushes.. that's where... Huge hearts carry Akron over Toledo By Terry Pluto The Zips were the team that wouldn't quit Monday night. Akron was playing without its leading scorer, senior Darryl Peterson. He suffered a concussion in practice. They had played their past 11 games without leading rebounder Jeremiah Wood, out for the year with knee surgery. So what happened? ``Somehow, we just got it done,'' Zips coach Keith Dambrot said. He then shook his head, searching for the right words. ``I've never been prouder of a team than this one,'' he said. ``That includes two state championship teams (at St. Vincent-St. Mary) and when we were ranked No. 1 at Ashland (NCAA Division II). Those teams were really good. These guys... '' He shook his head again, trying to say it just right. ``I see a lot of heart,'' he said. ``Just a bunch of guys with a lot of heart.'' It beat long enough and hard enough to upset Toledo 81-79 in overtime before 3,169 fans at Rhodes Arena where Akron is 10-1 and one the quietest stories on the local basketball season. Akron was picked second-to-last in the Mid-American Conference East Division race. The Zips were coming off a 13-15 season and lost a couple of key seniors. Toledo was picked to win the MAC West. But in Dambrot's first year as head coach, the Zips are 14-7 overall. And they are tied for second place in the MAC East with an 8-5 record. They have won seven of their past nine games. It's a fun team with several local kids, a team worthy of Akron's attention There were so many heroes in this game, but the biggest was Romeo Travis. He played 38 minutes. He put a game-high 21 points next to his name. A game-high 13 rebounds next to his name. A game-high four steals and a game-high three blocks. Now you know why the Zips 6-foot-7 forward said, ``I'm tired. I'm exhausted. I can't think about doing anything but going to sleep right now.'' Travis was relentless, elbows out, dueling for every rebound, driving hard for each of his points. At some key parts of the game, he even covered Keith Triplett, Toledo's leading scorer, and he's a 6-foot-3 guard. ``There were times when I looked over to the bench for a sub, but Coach told me that I'm not coming out,'' Travis said. So he stayed and played. The whole Akron team stayed and played, at least what's left of it. In their first meeting with Toledo, the now-injured Peterson had 20 points and eight rebounds. He averages 15 points and is the only senior starter. His absence left Akron with two seniors -- Rick McFadden and seldom-used Nick Meyers. McFadden had his best game of the season, scoring 18 points on 6-of-9 shooting. He grabbed the final Zips rebound in overtime, was fouled and dropped in two clutch free throws. He also covered Toledo's All-MAC star Triplett for most of the game. Triplett finished with a very tough 16 points, meaning McFadden outscored him. Who would have predicted that at the start of the evening? Freshman help Just as who would have guessed freshman Bubba Walther would ignite Akron early. He was scoreless in his last game against Can't State. But this game, he delivered 19 points on 6-of-10 shooting. Walther has sticks for arms and legs. He lofts a jumper from hip level, and it seems high enough to orbit the moon before it comes down near the rim. Buchtel product Matt Futch helped out in overtime, scoring four of his six points and grabbing a couple of clutch rebounds. It was a strange game for Akron, which was 5-of-14 from the foul line the first 40 minutes of regulation, then made 8-of-10 in the five-minute overtime when it meant the most. Don't even ask why. For some things, there are no rational explanations. Just as there are no logic reason for Akron to be two games behind first-place Miami, and doing it mostly with players who were not highly recruited. Some, such as Dru Joyce III, weren't recruited at all. But the sophomore point guard just plays solid, smart and gutsy basketball each game. He had eight points and seven assists while keeping the offense under control under the heat some of intense pressure. Even the final score was amazing. Akron scored 81 points despite using only one player (Travis, 10.8 points) averaging double-figures. ``Don't ask me how we did it,'' Dambrot said. ``Sometimes, you just get a group of guys who are so good together, they just surprise everyone.''
  12. Wow, what a game.. nobody gave us a chance. Yet here we are... great team effort and desire tonite.. never stopped clawing, scratching and fighting for it... Coach Dambrot has accomplished amazing things in his first season... One question?? How can we go 9 for 16 from 3 point arc but 11/22 from line??? The free throws are killing me... Other than that... Zips Rock!!!
  13. Michael Reghi intervied JD at halftime on Fox SportsNet Ohio as well.. Reghi is an idiot.... read the freakin schedule backwards.. had us playing MTSU at home and Army on the road... thanks Michael... JD straightened him out...
  14. The board was down most of the day... and some of us do have jobs....
  15. Anybody else as surprised as I am at the number of MAC fans from other boards finding their way to ZipsNation? MAC Daddy says that we're not reloading like Miami, Toledo, BG or NIU... Read the post.. I never said we were reloading. The scenario I was looking at only had one of these teams in the East.. Miami. And yes, the Zips need to replace players. But this isn't your MAC Daddy's Zips program anymore... Getsy already knows the system and now the whole team has another year of experience with it. And JD coaches to put the Zips in positions to win games. The bottom line is that without BG it was going to be Akron and Miami... Now BG will run away with it... As for Can't. flushes will not be a factor. They had their run and are done. Cribbs magic is gone and no JUCO superstar is going to save the Flushes from their "return to bottom feeder glory." Ohio now has a name coach.. that should be good for, let's see how many wins??? Zero. Still the same Bobcats. Return to running game.. Wasn't Solich the guru who was to make Nebraska a modern, passing offense?? Uh-huh... By the way, MAC Daddy, you of all people should know that "should have beat the Zips." counts for nothing...
  16. Opinions on BG's move back East??? Help or hurt the Zips? My thoughts: Short-term it pushes us back a year or two. No BG in '05 means we slug it out with Miami for the MAC EAST title. Add BG and you have to think BG and Miami are favorites . Maybe we can sneak up on them, flying just under the radar?? Long-term it helps. Recruiting took a major step forward this year and being able to point to games with Miami and BG every year, two very successful programs, should help JD recruit even more... I am really looking forward to this season. How long has it been since we could say that?? Has anybody heard who the crossover games are yet? I read on the MAC website that the opponents were approved at the same meeting BG's move was approved...
