Gund Arena's new name, Quicken Loans Arena, goes by the shortened name "The Q." So does that mean we would have to call the new stadium the "BJ?"

Charlie Frye could start this week!!

Yahoo Sports thinks so too.. " Cleveland Browns (2-4) – With Trent Dilfer stumbling and the season going down the tubes, the Browns might want to warm up Charlie Frye just to see what they've got for the future. " -

Splain this one.. Last week they had NIU 70 and Zips 71 after Akron wins in OT. This week, NIU was idle til tonite and we lay an egg vs CMU and we are #72 and NIU is now #73??? How and why? Also, they predict Miami 38, NIU 31 but have NIU @ #73 and Miami at #94??? Here are all MAC teams: #58 Toledo #68 BG #72 Akron #73 NIU #87 Ohio #91 EMU #93 CMU #94 Miami #102 Can't #108 WMU #117 Buffalo #118 Ball State #119 Temple

Predict Akron vs. Central Michigan score!!
Zippy989 replied to Ryno aka Menace's topic in Akron Zips Football
Vandelay: Nick’s Pick: Akron 35 – CMU 23 Line: Akron by 11 Comment: To quote “The Monkeys†and “Smashmouth,†‘I’m a believer’ when it comes to JD Brookhart and his Akron team. The home win over a very good NIU team was huge for this program as during the Lee Owens era, that would have been the type of game the Zips lost instead of won in OT. Central is reeling from a home loss to intra-state rival EMU. Look for Akron to win by a good margin. MAC Report Online: Akron was expected by many to be in a rebuilding phase, only returning 12 starters and having to replace All-MAC quarterback, and four-year starter, Charlie Frye. Instead, the Zips sit atop the MAC East in a three-way tie and appear to have found a solid successor to Charlie Frye. Behind quarterback Luke Getsy, the Zips will be seeking their first 2-0 MAC start since 2001. ...... Akron may be the best team in the MAC East this season and should make it eight victories in their last ten games, dating back to last season. Prediction: Akron 38, Central Michigan 17. CBS Sportsline: Akron 31 Central Michigan 20 I like the Zips by 7-10 points. Akron 34, CMU 24 -
cause we get no respect....

NIU fans are hoping for a rematch in Detroit...got me thinking. Two Questions: Could the Zips win the East? Is this realistic or just wishful thinking?? Consider this... everyone is looking past the Zips to Miami and BG. Miami has 1 loss already (CMU) and plays their next MAC game @ NIU. NIU has a bye and has to live with the Akron game for an extra week. Their backs are against the wall. They will come out fired up. Miami has to be wondering what is going on as well. Should be a great game... But I give hte nod to the home team .. NIU. That gives Miami 2 losses before they host BG. Never would have thought that. And they still have to face Akron. BG hosts Akron then @ Can't State, @ Miami and then hosts Toledo... I would have originally said Akron loses but I think it could be a shoot out.... at Miami is not a gimme and Toledo has owned BG recently. BG could have two losses as well. Bottom line. If the Zips win one of the two games vs Miami or BG... They could finish 7-1...if no let downs vs rest of schedule....

Was at the game... wow... Stats can't be right... Horvath was sacked behind the line at lest 2 x that I remember. Amd the D played lights out until tired in the 4th... Held Wolfe to 52 yds on 27 carries.... amazing game.... what a win!!!! Crowd about 15,600.... Need more for CMU game......

From Purdue Boards: "J Colletto - 11:12am Sep 12, 2005 EST (#26 of 28) Good and bad... Unfortunately, I was travelling and unable to see the game, but I did listen to it. I really can't say I was overly joyed by the performance, but I am definitely not ready to jump off the bandwagon. Here are some of my thoughts: -Kirsch played pretty well. Having made some mistakes will provide better learning and more focus - I'm feeling okay about him. -Secondary was bad, but not a real surprise. They'll get better, but will continue to be a weak link. -Akron is better than a lot of people think. " "dan somerville - 01:57pm Sep 12, 2005 EST (#28 of 28) Good thread everyone... proving once again why this is an outstanding Purdue football forum - lots of opinions, most of them intelligent and informed, and plenty to chew on and about. My opinions of the game (if anyone cares): 5) The most important point to remember here - and it seems to have been lost in the shuffle - is that Akron isn't a bad team. They went 6-2 last year in the MAC, losing to Miami 37-27 in the MAC East title game. Are they Notre Dame? No, but I'd rather play a competitive MAC team like Akron than a meaningless game like Iowa played against Ball State the way we did last year (sorry Scott). "

Once I got over being upset that the Urinal has Akron's Soccer article listed under Can't State on the website... I was pleased with two articles on the Zips today.. Here's the link.. hope you can see the Sports page without registering. If not go to www.ohio.com and look at Sports... Reakin Urinal.. Ohio.com Articles: Posted on Thu, Sep. 08, 2005 Freshmen to get test on defense Visit to Purdue first game action for highly touted recruiting class By David Lee Morgan Jr. Beacon Journal sports writer Several members of the heralded freshman class that University of Akron coach J.D. Brookhart recruited will face a huge test Saturday, when the Zips play at No. 15 Purdue, in the season-opener for both teams. Most of the Zips' first-year players will be on the defensive side of the ball. Brookhart plans to start linebacker Kevin Grant (6-foot-2, 235 pounds), with defensive backs Brion Stokes and Brandon Anderson expected to see action off the bench. On the defensive front, Brookhart will give linemen Clarence McPherson (6-3, 255), Josh Kiner (6-3, 255) and Eric Lively (6-2, 255) quality minutes during the course of the game. Offensively, running back Alex Allen, tight end Merce Poindexter and fullback Joe Tuzze will play, and Brookhart said one lineman -- either Zack Anderson (6-6, 275) or Chris Kemme (6-6, 260) -- will play. Brookhart will have decisions to make regarding the rest of the freshman class. He'll have until Week 5 to decide whether a freshman will play or be redshirted, meaning he won't play the rest of the season unless there's an injury to a player and that freshman is needed to fill in as a backup. A freshman who is redshirted will maintain his freshman status the following year. But once he has played a down as a freshman, he can't be redshirted. ``Unless they get hurt before that fourth game, if they played just one down and didn't play the rest of the season and were healthy, they used up a year,'' Brookhart said. ``We're still deciding with a couple of guys as to whether we're going to redshirt or play them and a lot is going to depend on the first four weeks of the season and how healthy we are.'' Brookhart said he has confidence in the freshmen and has been impressed with their progress from the start of preseason drills last month. The Zips' 2005 recruiting class was ranked by several national publications as the best in the Mid-American Conference. ``This is a really good group,'' Brookhart said. ``It's actually better than we thought. There's good speed and the guys are good football players from good (high school) programs. I feel great about our freshman class.'' Now, the reality is that having to play so many freshmen, especially in the opener against a quality opponent like the Boilermakers, means there will be mismatches. Brookhart understands that it will take time for the young players to develop. ``Playing Purdue will help them out,'' he said. ``They'll see a great college environment, great competition and they'll find out pretty quick they can play at that level. Once that happens, you start to get a little confidence.'' Then again, there's the possibility that a younger player's confidence can be shaken when he faces a Top 25 team in his first collegiate start. That doesn't worry Brookhart. ``If things don't go well, most athletes are not short on confidence,'' Brookhart said. ``If it's a rough day, most of the guys are going to say they just had an off day. There are going to be tough days for everyone but it's still just football, 11 on 11.'' Zips senior seeking more thrills By David Lee Morgan Jr. Beacon Journal sports writer Domenik Hixon can be called somewhat of a thrill seeker. He'd probably ride Cedar Point's Top Thrill Dragster, Millenium Force or Magnum XL-200 without the safety bar if he were allowed. The University of Akron senior wide receiver rides a Suzuki SV1000 -- aka crotch rocket -- across campus. Riding a motorcycle isn't the only thing that gets Hixon's blood pumping. For the 6-foot-2, 192-pound senior, standing on the football field awaiting a kickoff or punt, while 10 or 11 opposing players are barreling down with one thing in mind -- to completely pulverize him -- is an indescribable feeling. That's what Hixon will be facing Saturday, when the Zips open the season at No. 15-ranked Purdue. As the player who led the Zips in total receiving yards (882), yards per catch (13.4) and touchdowns (six) last season, Hixon has a certain frame of mind when he runs a pass route across the middle of the field. But returning punts and kicks, the mind-set is much different. Along with speed, quickness and the ability to make yourself elusive, an effective kick returner has to have a little bit of renegade in him. Last year, Hixon finished first in the Mid-American Conference and sixth in the nation in punt-return average at 17.2 yards. He also was third in the MAC in kickoff returns (24.9). Hixon set a school record last year for the longest punt return with an 85-yard score against Ball State and returned a kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown against Buffalo. The secret to his returns? ``You want to get vertical first and make the other team commit and then you can make a move to find an opening,'' Hixon said. ``When I'm watching and studying other players, I try and take some techniques from what I see and I noticed if you get north and south and just gain yards you will do better.'' So as a returner, is it a borderline fear factor? ``I wouldn't call it fear,'' Hixon said. ``It's more of an extra adrenaline rush. You're just patiently waiting and waiting (for the ball) and as soon as you get it in your hands, you have 10 people running down trying to take your head off so you're ready to just take off and go somewhere.'' Linebackers and special teams coach Matt Wallerstedt has coached long enough to know that a player is ``special'' in what he does. Hixon is that special player. ``Domenik has had success with the kick and punt return units and with the type of energy he has, the guys rally around that,'' Wallerstedt said. ``He had some game-breaking returns last year that swung momentum our way. ``But you're still talking about 11 guys with a one-shot deal. ``There's no second or third down. Everyone is doing their jobs and if one guy breaks down, the whole unit breaks down. ``You have to get it right the first time.''

Heard a couple of radio ads pushing Akron season tickets... ad was about "coming out to see the next NFL star to play at Akron." Who will be the next Charlie Frye??? Then watching the Browns/Bears game, Charlie does an ad for the U... at the end Charlie is standing in the new field house with the Zips and says "Oh, and they have a pretty good football team too!" The Zips go nuts behind him.... Brilliant... Charlie being drafted by the Browns just might take the Zips to the next level. If we continue to upgrade facilities that is. The publicity UA football is getting from the "local boy makes good" angle is totally immeasurable. Even the Beacon has had to cover him. Had Charlie been taken by any other team, not the same at all... Think the local blue chippers will at least listen to JD because of Charlie? You better believe it. Every time Charlie steps on the field in a Browns uni.. Akron benefits.... JD had a great recruiting class last year. I expect great thing again this year. Now he can point to Charlie, Jason Taylor and Dwight Smith... Jake Schifino and Matt Cherry... and his contacts with Mike Shanahan and other NFL coaches. This could really get exciting soon!! Charlie is still a huge part of the Zip's future... Thanks Charlie... your a class act....

http://www.ohio.com/mld/ohio/sports/colleg...on/12394374.htm Registration required.... Article below... Posted on Tue, Aug. 16, 2005 Brookhart counting on freshmen input Zips head coach expects highly touted class to produce early in season By David Lee Morgan Jr. Beacon Journal sports writer The first day of practice in full pads for the University of Akron football team Monday featured many bone-jarring hits -- several by former Ellet linebacker Bryan Howe -- along with a few minor altercations that carried over from the heat of competition and some bumps and bruises. Second-year head coach J.D. Brookhart went into preseason camp knowing: • University of Pittsburgh junior transfer Luke Getsy is the heir-apparent to replace Charlie Frye at quarterback; • Senior wide receiver Domenik Hixon will be the featured receiver. On defense, senior linemen Kiki Gonzalez (6-foot-2, 300 pounds) and Brian White (6-2, 275) are the key guys up front. But Brookhart plans on making the most of his freshman recruiting class, which was considered the top incoming class in the Mid-American Conference by several national publications. ``I think this freshman group is as (good as) advertised,'' said Brookhart, last year's MAC Coach of the Year. ``It's a talented group. There will be freshmen on the field and there will be some who will contribute, without question.'' Some of the freshmen who could see action include offensive lineman Garrett Brewster (6-4, 290), tight end Doug Fife (6-5, 239), defensive linemen Doug Williams (6-2, 241) and Eric Lively (6-2, 255), linebackers Kevin Grant (6-2, 235) and Jemall Benjamin (6-1, 225) and defensive backs Antonio Samuel (6-0, 203) and Brandon Anderson (5-11, 170.) Meanwhile, Brookhart wasn't impressed with the way the team practiced Monday. But, he wasn't overly concerned. ``Honestly, I think we were a little tired (today) and it showed,'' he said. ``We were a little lethargic and slow to get going. But that's part of fighting through two-a-days and we have to get the right mental attitude.'' And the battle in the backfield is looking very interesting. Dennis Kennedy, who initially signed with Ohio State but then was granted a release and enrolled at Akron last year, is making a push to move up on the depth chart. The redshirt freshman is listed as the No. 3 running back behind Brett Biggs and Jerrell Ringer. Kennedy, who ran with the No. 2 offense, had several nice runs and scored on a 76-yard screen pass Monday. After making the catch in the left flat, he bounced away from a few would-be tacklers, cut to the middle of the field where he made another cut to avoid a defender, then outraced the rest of the unit for the score. Kennedy was the leading rusher in the annual spring game with 81 yards. Brookhart said Ringer hasn't lost his spot on the depth chart and will be used in different ways. Last year, Ringer was edged out of the No. 1 spot at the end of preseason camp by Biggs. But Brookhart and the rest of the staff like Ringer because he's a team player and will play any position he's asked. ``What (Jerrell) is doing for us is huge,'' Brookhart said. ``He's in multiple positions. We're playing him at fullback and tailback. He's a smart kid and he knows the system. ``We have some two-back stuff where we're getting the fullback the ball so he's good to have in there. We have him listed on our board at fullback but he'll actually take reps at both (fullback and tailback).'' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CK got it right.. The way I read it, Johnson is saying that any player coming from Akron has inferior talent because it's not the SEC like Florida. BS. Talent is talent no matter where they play. Here's a couple of more NFL Zips to add to the list: Jason Taylor, Victor Green, Dwight Smith, Jake Shafino.... Go get him Charlie....

http://www.cleveland.com/sports/plaindeale...7761.xml&coll=2 "I think Charlie's a confident kid, and I think that's going to be a plus for him down the road. I think he'll tell you that he's got a long ways to go. He played at Akron. He's going from Akron to the NFL. That's a big step. But he comes in with a confident head on him. He's not afraid to take a risk. That's going to be in his favor." "Like I said, coming from Akron to the NFL is a huge jump," Johnson said. "It's not SEC football. And it's definitely not the NFL." Well see what Mr Little Johnson has to say when Charlie takes his backup QB job!!!

http://www.tennessean.com/apps/pbcs.dll/ar...428/1345/SPORTS Thursday, 07/14/05 MTSU loses three players to academics Former Ezell-Harding standout Antoine Owens is one of three key MTSU football players who will miss the 2005 season because of academic trouble. Owens, a sophomore who started two games and recorded 24 tackles at defensive end last season, was ruled ineligible. MTSU's leading tackler, linebacker Marcel Horne, and running back DeMarco McNair were also ruled ineligible because of poor grades. Owens was set to compete with Sean Mosely for the starting right end position in fall camp. Horne, a rising junior, made 66 tackles, forced a fumble and recovered a fumble at weakside linebacker. McNair, a rising sophomore, had moved from safety to running back and rushed for 122 yards on 21 carries and scored two touchdowns last season. He also had a 13-yard catch. McNair came out of spring practice listed as the starting tailback on the depth chart along with Eugene Gross.
