All we had to do was get Jim Christian to leave.
-
I don't live in the area anymore, but I'm curious if this was a big story up there and if it made any waves.

THE GOGGLES! THEY DO NOTHING!

Can anyone fill in the blanks?
BC chose to hire Jim Christian over Philips because ___________________
Brad Bates is friends with Jim Christian's agent.

Beyond the obvious of having head coaching experience, I'm not sure I'd agree that Phillips' creds are greater than Groce's prior to arriving at OU:
1996–1997 Wisconsin (operations)
1997–1999 Wayne State College (asst.)
1999–2001 Lake Superior State (asst.)
2001–2004 UW–Milwaukee (asst.)
2004–2007 North Dakota State (asst.)
2007–2014 North Dakota State (head)
1993–1996 Taylor (asst.)
1996–2000 NC State (asst.)
2000–2001 Butler (asst.)
2001–2004 Xavier (asst.)
2004–2008 Ohio State (asst.)
But that head coaching experience pretty much trumps the assistant experience, no? Especially with an NCAA tournament win under his belt?
-
JSF, isn't it odd that Schaus prefers candidates with head coaching experience when the only one without head coaching experience he's hired (Groce) delivered the best results (Sweet 16 run)?
Quite. But I suppose Phillips compares pretty favorably to Groce from a buzz standpoint but is coming in with more experience.
-
Schaus' stated preference is to hire head coaches with prior HC experience. Since John Groce, oddly enough, that has been his pattern. So I would not expect Boals to have been seriously considered.
-
Basketball-wise it looks like a good hire. Ohio is a mess with regards to team chemistry and player attitudes, though, and I don't know if this coach can do anything to fix that except blow it up and start over with his own players.
I don't think this is true. Jon Smith bailed, but the rest of the team played pretty darn hard.

Ohio hires Saul Phillips of North Dakota State.

Once you eat Filet Mignon, you don't really want to eat anything else either. But when the cupboard's bare and your pockets are empty, if someone hands you a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, you eat it.
No way. I would much rather have a PBJ than mignon.

Next, I ain't buyin' that IPFW is a "bad" team. The Zips currently have a 21-12 record and #96 RPI compared with IPFW's 24-10 record and #121 RPI. Not a lot of difference. The Zips should have a small advantage in their attempt to keep the 22+ win streak alive. But this is not a gimme game.
Everyone can check out IPFW's season stats here and a comparison of team stats here.
Basketball State has IPFW at 63 and Akron at 82 in their rankings. Pomeroy has Akron very slightly ahead.

Bobcat fans blaming the refs. Unbelievable.
Correction: A few fans are blaming the referees. But they always blame the referees, so please ignore them. Akron deserved the large disparity in FTA. Yes, the referees blew an interference call, but it did not change the outcome. And it's not nearly as egregious as missing JR Sims out of bounds last night.

Good game. Best wishes tomorrow against WMU.
-
With a win Wednesday, Ohio would win a three-way tie with UB and Akron. Most likely, Akron gets left out in that scenario.
-
I'm rooting for Buffalo if I'm a Zip fan. If Ohio wins, that throws all three into a tie assuming Akron takes care of business Wednesday.

Dambrot throws players under the bus...again.
Nice job kicking them when they are down. You're the highest paid employee in the Athletic Department Keith. Take some responsibility when things go bad.
Well, I think he's right. I never thought the Zips were interested in competing aside from a couple players.

While we don't share the kitten fans obsession with us,
By my eyes, each fanbase seems to be pretty interested in the other school.

Ooooh, can we get one of those Taiwanese animations about Zeke?

Having expectations is fine and healthy. What that dude did was throw a temper tantrum like a baby. If he doesn't end up regetting that, he must be a real loser. Get some perspective in life, bro.

I didn't vote for Cooper; I had Offutt from Ohio. I didn't have Evans either.
There's no position slots on the all-tournament team; I just pick the five best players.

Don't sleep on Nate Wolters, DB.
Most of us know you lived there previously Dave, but I don't believe most UM fans care one way or another about the Ohio MAC schools. The majority will simply look at an upset as a way to avoid a perceived bigger hurdle in VCU.I went to Michigan for the NCAA volleyball tournament a few years back. They seemed unable to differentiate Ohio schools from Ohio State. Their antics last year reinforced that.

I feel like this will be a game of big runs.

Not. Good.
Bobcats @ Zips — March 1st at 8 pm

Congrats to the Zips on another title. No question, Akron is the class of the conference.
And unlike some Bobcat brethren, I don't see any way they take you out in Cleveland unless it's an off night for Akron. It's pretty clear who is superior.
Next year, though, should be very competitive.
