  1. I second everything Dave writes here. Steve absolutely destroyed any concern I had that he'd be as mobile as a tree. Remember Vandersluis on Miami a few years ago? The guy was a mountain that just couldn't move. Steve showed athleticism. I'm content that he will be a factor for the Zips eventually. Probably as quick as Bardo in a straight line .. lateral quickness .. tough to say, and that does matter in these things. My highlight of the night wasn't the slam, since my 4 year old had pulled me out the door before that .. it was in the first half when Swiech ran out at a shooter near the 3 point arc .. hollering like a madman, Steve is running right at the guy, and the Urbana guy just threw the ball out of bounds under the basket as if to say .. "ok you can have it ... just don't kill me."Feeling good about Swiech today .. makes this game (Urbana / DII) worth playing. Good to throw him a bone and give him a taste of the action.Go Zips.
  2. Perhaps that jumps out from the box score .. but from being at the game, I can tell you that Urbana didn't really go in to the paint much at all. There simply weren't a lot of opportunities to block shots. The defensive effort last night was pretty solid, IMO.
  3. To begin with, it's too late to redshirt anyone who's already played. If they've played a minute, they're not redshirting.I think it's extraordinarily tough to play 5 guards. It's hard enough to find minutes for 4 .. but 5 is another story.
  4. NO EXCUSES now .. the committee can't be blamed .. no conspiracies.Zippers at home until the Final 4.Now they just need to go out and get it done.Go Zips!!
  5. Steve will have his days .. lots of them. It's game #3 of about 120 in his career. No need to give up. B) B) Go Zips!
  6. The last time I remember a story about a marching band was back in '90. I was a senior at Stow .. the FB team got pasted by Massilon Washington something like 51-0. The next day, the leadin to the writeup was a comment about how "Stow's Band showed up and performed well as usual.."So my guess, without intending offense .. is that the band being on the front page means things aren't going great on the field for the FB guys.Go Zips!
  7. I urge you to take your own advice here.Zips won a game in which they didn't play well for 25 minutes .. that's what GOOD teams do. BAD teams lose games like that.Way to predict a failed season after 40 minutes.Go Zips!!! B)
  8. Uhhh ...Those talking about a 6 seed are saying 6th OVERALL seed .. so basically a #2 seed in one of the regions. Home games until the final 8. That's what we're talking about. Being in the top 8 overall seeds.
  9. Live stats shows one miss by hartwick and 2 makes by UA .. any more info?
  10. Great story CK .. better way to end the evening than what most of us probably did.My boy and I had a similar moment sneaking onto the court at UMass .. but the folks there didn't mind ..
  11. Dennis Kennedy & the O line deserve to play in a bowl game this year. The rest of the team needs to get them there.
  12. Love the fact that he goes right up with it on some of those inside feeds. Too often, you see a big man bringing the ball down and getting hacked at or turning it over.Good times.
  13. Hello Zips Fans,Given the monumental occasion that was 12 November 2008, I would like to request that you once again refresh yourselves with regards to recruiting guidelines and contact with prospective athletes and their families. While a remarkable student athlete has recently committed in writing to join the Zips, please be aware that the same rules apply to contact. The first post in this topic, as well as the announcement in the recruiting forums (linked below) should be re-read.I want to be clear here: the general appreciations and congratulations remain fine. But direct contact (PM, Email, Phone of any sort) initiated by members toward the recruit or family is NOT permissible. We have NOT had any problems with that, and the Moderators do appreciate everyone's compliance. So this is just a gentle reminder that the rules remain in place. Should a family member update the Nation periodically, that's still all good. Below, I have copied excerpts of a note from Kevin Klotz, who is Assistant AD for Compliance. Please read it carefully. You'll see that our current mode of operation has been working, and that we should continue in the same manner. Kevin also includes his contact information. A good rule of thumb here is that if you have any questions, call or email him to check compliance before you act.A link to Z-Fund's specific policies and NCAA rules is in THIS ANNOUNCEMENT.Thanks for your time & I appreciate your adherence to these policies. We never want to put these young athletes or Zips programs at risk.Go Zips!ZW-----From Kevin Kotz:-----Hello Zip Watcher,First, I would like to introduce myself. My name is Kevin Klotz and I am the Assistant AD for Compliance here at The University of Akron. I have been keeping an eye on the threads involving Zeke Marshall since he is one of the most highly touted prospective student-athletes we have actively recruited. I want to thank you for your vigilance in monitoring the content of the posts on this site as well as directing people to the summary of the NCAA's booster rules which my office has placed on the Z-Fund portion of GoZips.com. As you correctly pointed out in one of your posts, it's pretty safe to say that just about everyone who has posted on this site is considered a booster and therefore subject to all NCAA rules. With Zeke signing a National Letter of Intent today, I felt it was an appropriate time to make contact with you and clarify some information surrounding NCAA rules and what today's signing means to Zips fans.First and foremost, even though Zeke has signed an NLI, he is still considered a PROSPECT under NCAA rules. This means the recruiting rules which have governed our boosters throughout Zeke's recruitment continue be remain effective until such time that Zeke attends classes at The University of Akron in the Fall. Fans and boosters are still not permitted to have any in-person, on- or off-campus contact with Zeke or his family. Additionally, communication with Zeke and/or his family members via email, this website or any other website continues to be strictly prohibited. Telephone calls to Zeke and his family would also continue to be prohibited as well. I realize that many of the posters on this site have attended Zeke's games, which has been and continues to remain permissible. However, it is important for our fans and boosters to realize that having any contact with Zeke or his family members before, during or after such contests would continue to be a recruiting violation. While Zeke's commitment to the University of Akron today a momentous occasion for our basketball program and makes him a Zip in many respects, NCAA rules continue to prohibit us from treating him in the same manner as we treat current members of the team. I would like to ask you to please post this information prominently on Zipsnation.org as well as let everyone know that my office is always available to answer any questions that our fans and boosters have regarding NCAA rules. I may be contacted at kklotz@uakron.edu or by phone at 330-972-6857.Again, thank you for your time and effort in monitoring this site which has helped ensure Akron's continued adherence to NCAA rules. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.Sincerely,Kevin KlotzAssistant AD - ComplianceGO ZIPS!
  14. Only 1 scholarship available for 2009, so yes .. Zeke stands alone.
  15. TREMENDOUS.Seems like forever and a day since GoZips88, BirdZip & Family, Lilroodude and I met up to watch the big fella swat some shots in Twinsburg. At the time it seemed a remote possibility that the Zips could be landing the best player in the building, but they did it.Props to Boals & KD .. welcome to Zeke & family. Great things are here and greater things are to come.Great day.Go Zips!
  16. Those aren't crickets ... they're grasshoppers.As in patience, Grasshopper .. you've nothing to worry about here. B) B) Go Zips!
  17. Caleb's Crew need simply to take care of business and win 2 games at home. They do that, and the rest should fall into place. With 2 wins and a 17-1-3 record, they should get a top 8. Now with a little help in the Big 10 end of things, and maybe an early slip up by Maryland in the ACC, that could turn into top 4. Both the computers and humans have them on the cusp, and their SOS backs it up.Gotta take care of business .. seems like the chances are high that they will.Go Zips!
  18. Excellent!Put them on Zips fans!!! B) B)
  19. Today I Hope that a big shot Changer could be coming to the JAR. Wearing #44 (or otherwise).Anyone know what time the fax machine in the AD's office opens up?Go Zips! Go Zeke! Go Trevor! B) B)
  20. It's off DST .. check your settings, you may have DST auto correct unchecked. I think the following link will take you there, but it's under "My Controls" Then "Board Settings" At the lower left.Board Controls
  21. Great stuff to read here.Tomorrow's a big day .. gonna have to edit my sig.Go Zips! Go Trevor! Go Zeke!
  22. What he said. Great post.Zips are 0-0 .. nothing more .. nothing less.
  23. Ma'am, we enjoyed having your favorite player on the team. We all really did. He was a big contributor. During that time, the Moderators tolerated some of your false rumors and trying to stir up dissension. It's natural to hope one's favorite gets more playing time and can be a bigger part. I'll never question that. But now that you don't have a purported "inside feed" or agenda to get your player more PT .. knock it off. Thanks & Go Zips!ZW
  24. A few more observations:- The Zips will be fine on offense. I think the run and gun will be fun to watch. For me, B & C McKnight and McNees will offer good options in the half court set. Bardo's increasing offensive arsenal will help also. Add to that the new guards' ability to move and score in the open court & on the break. And Linharts "let it come to him" game ... Zips should score plenty.- Defense was horrid. Can't say it better than KD did on the radio. Nobody was good .. not everyone was terrible, but no one was good. The closing lineup of Steward, Roberts, Conyers, Linhart & C McK was the best of the day. I do think that a lot of the issue was "playing together" rather than playing hard. Effort didn't seem to be lacking, but the communication and help D was lacking. I think Bardo took some fouls on cleaning up other guys' messes coming down the lane.- Good news is that this is all fixable. You can't teach quickness and athleticism. They can teach defense. - Ronnie appears ahead of Humpty at this point. But I have confidence that both will play important minutes and help this team. Lots of depth in the backcourt. It's tough to really play 4 guards .. but KD has 4 talented ones to rely on. 2 of which have big game experience.- Frontcourt looks promising also. CMcK can step up. BMcK can score (can he defend? that we will see). Nate is Nate .. Jimmy can provide a defensive spark .. and I think Bardo's going to be better than anyone imagined. The dude is HUGE.Best thing about this exhibition is that they got some time against another team. Were able to score the basketball, and nearly lost because of no D. That gives the fans some energy (the scoring), gets some of the jitters out of the young guys and gives KD something to work the guys over about. I suspect they'll be a bit better next week.Last year, they were pretty bad in Alaska .. but it turned around. I anticipate the same this year.Go Zips! Go Trevor. Go Sharpen your pencil Zeke!
  25. Attending Zips hoops games w/ Dad as a kid soon after moving into the area in 1979.1986 OVC championship @ the JAR sealed it forever.
