  1. That goal was very significant for Zarek. Unless I missed something when perusing back through the stats today at lunch, the only goal Zarek scored for the Zips was his PK vs UNC in the 2009 College Cup semi-final (just as I thought when I saw him score yesterday).
  2. Great photos of Sounders U23 action, including Aodhan and DeAndre
  3. Zarek Valentin scored in the 78th minute vs the Crew to even the score at 1-1. Montreal went on to win 2-1 on a pk awarded for a foul in the box. Edit: http://www.impactmontreal.com/en/matchday-...uly-8-mtl-v-clb Edit 2:
  4. Awesome. I believe Aodhan Quinn and his parents (visiting from San Diego) were attending their first ever Sounders game at CenturyLink last night. Nice that that worked out for them.
  5. http://www.rcfoxes.com/2012_Statistics.htm 17 M Derschang, Robbie Games Played: 6 Points: 3 Minutes: 455 Goals: Assists: 3 Shots: 7 Fouls:
  6. Sounders U-23 2 - 1 Kitsap Pumas (RECAP) The Sounders U-23 defeated the Kitsap Pumas 2-1 Friday night with two late goals. DeAndre Yedlin tied the game in the 87th minute off of a corner kick... ...The Sounders U-23 continued to press in the 87th minute and earned a corner kick. A powerfull and whipping ball was struck into the box by Mauricio Diaz De Leon. U-23’s defender DeAndre Yedlin timed his run perfectly and met the ball in front of his defender. He directed his header toward the back post and into the lower corner for the equalizer. ...
  7. AFC Cleveland defeated FC Buffalo 3-0. Thomas Schmitt scored the 3rd goal. Andrian McAdams looked very solid in goal, including an outstanding save just before half time. University of Akron striker Tommy Schmitt had the goal of the night just three minutes later. Schmitt found himself smothered by a defender and the onrushing Buffalo keeper, but calmly slotted a shot between the two at a very title angle. This gave Cleveland the 3-0 lead.
  8. Nice victory for the Sounders U23. I must admit, I fell asleep before the heroics. Congratulations to DeAndre for getting the goal that evened the score. Bremerton, WA – The Sounders U-23 defeated the Kitsap Pumas 2-1 Friday night with two late goals. DeAndre Yedlin tied the game in the 87th minute off of a corner kick, and then an own goal from Pumas defender Steve Mohn in the 88th put the game away for the Sounders U-23.
  9. I would add Trapp, Yedlin, and Gallego. They fit well into both the 4-3-3 (usual formation) and the 3-4-3. Meves will compete with Pina and McAdams.
  10. Yes. You are correct. Quinn was in midfield alongside Scott Caldwell.
  11. Not that simple. Aodhan Quinn is also in the mix.
  12. I missed this article on TopDrawerSoccer a few weeks ago (June 19, 2012)... Sounders U23 navigating through first season Sounders U23 Players to Watch D DeAndre Yedlin, Akron: The pacey right back was a picture of consistency for the Zips last season and has enjoyed the same kind of summer so far for the Sounders, playing every minute of every match. F Aodhan Quinn, Akron: The No. 9 for the Zips, Quinn is one of a few guys who don’t fall into the category of being a Sounders homegrown player. Adds a creative dimension to the attack and has scored three goals on the year so far.
  13. Game winner (only goal of the match). Nice! "... And for Darren to do as well as he did defensively and also get the winning goal was a huge performance from an excellent young player."
  14. I agree that DeAndre would not be on the bench. I would see him at right wing as we did vs Wright State. With Mattocks gone, replacing his goal production is going to be the Zips biggest challenge. Also, I wouldn't consider subbing 2 players a lot of subbing. When the Zips switched from the 3-4-3 to the 4-3-3, Zac and Renaldo were subbed into the match (can't remember the players who subbed out), and DeAndre shifted to his "normal" right back position in the 4-3-3 formation. Hence, my reference to a possible starting XIII (not necessarily including these players). Our 3-4-3 may have a few different starters than our 4-3-3. I certainly can see Caleb utilizing the players who are best for each formation.
  15. This is just a guess, but based on the Spring match vs Wright State, I think we may see more substitutions this season than we have in the past. There may be a number of games where we start in one formation, 3-4-3 for example, and then switch to another, our usual 4-3-3. This will likely mean a couple of players may switch positions and others, who better fit the formation, may be substituted out/in. Instead of a starting XI, we may have XIII players who are considered starters depending upon whether we're starting the match in a 3-4-3 or a 4-3-3.
  16. U-18s win Academy Playoff group to advance to Finals Serna's dramatic stoppage time goal lifts Rapids to win group as only undefeated team It was a story book ending, requiring perseverance and a dramatic finish. The Colorado Rapids U-18 Development Academy team defeated the Dallas Texans on a stoppage time goal from Dillon Serna in the third and final match of group play of the U.S. Soccer Development Academy Playoffs on Thursday morning in Frisco, Texas. With the win, the Rapids remained undefeated in the group and claimed one of the eight coveted berths in the Academy Finals, which will be played in Houston from July 16-23....
  17. Awesome...AFC Cleveland (Schmitt, Gallego, McAdams, and Murrow) live in Broadview Heights followed by the Sounders U23 (Quinn and Yedlin) online.
  18. Yedlin to Quinn! Game winner! Sounders U23 1-0 WA Crossfire (RECAP) Redmond, WA - The Sounders U-23 got a late game winner from Aodhan Quinn to take a 1-0 victory over the Washington Crossfire. The match was a back and fourth game that was physical in nature. The Sounders U-23 had opportunities early but were unable to find the back of the net. In the second half the Sounders controlled possession and had a few great chances inside the Crossfire 18 yard box before Aodhan Quinn finally buried a goal off a DeAndre Yedlin pass in the 88th minute. The Sounders then held on in stoppage time as Crossfire pressed but were unable to equalize.
  19. Bucks Extinguish Fire 2-0, Dampen Chicago Playoff HopeUnbeaten streak goes to twelve for division leaders ...In a game delayed sixty minutes due to weather, both teams came out ready to play and moved the ball up and down the field at will. Chicago had the better of the first half chances out shooting the visitors 7-4 in the first half and had a 6-2 edge in corner kicks. The Bucks defense was solid on Sunday as it has been all season long led by center backs Kevin Cope and Seb Harris, who dominated the game in the air. The Bucks did have several first half chances that were all created on counter attacking through the midfield between Scott Caldwell, Nermin Crnkic and Tom Catalano. The three worked well together and played several balls into the area for forward Anthony Grant, who would have two great first half opportunities saved by Fire keeper David Meves and another sure goal rejected by the near goal post. The Bucks were content to go to the half scoreless, where head coach Gary Parsons made the necessary adjustments to the offensive plan. The Bucks wasted no time in the second half in putting the Fire under constant pressure and would finally break the scoreless draw in the 51st minute when Man of the Match Crnkic would steal a ball at midfield, take on two defenders before slotting a perfect pass into the path of Grant, who first timed his shot past Meves for a 1-0 lead. Grant’s goal would be his team leading sixth of the season; but that would be matched just two minutes later. Crnkic took a neatly played ball from Nate Boyden on the left flank, beat two men as he cut across the middle of the penalty area and ripped a twelve yard shot into the side netting for a 2-0 lead and his sixth tally on the season to match Grant for the team lead. The Bucks would continue to pound at the Fire goal for the next ten minutes but could not get the third goal past Meves....
  20. Sinisa, Zarek, and Evan Bush starting today for Montreal vs Perry Kitchen/DC United.
  21. I agree too many balls in the air. The other match I attended was against Detroit at Byers Field, and AFC Cleveland seemed to control the ball more that night. Last night, I felt Erie was on the attack more than AFC Cleveland. I'll also be there next Friday. If I didn't already have other plans, I'd consider driving to Erie next Saturday. It's great seeing our Zips in different situations. I'm glad Bryan Gallego joined AFC Cleveland, and that we got to see Andrian play GK. It was great seeing Andrian, Bryan, Thomas and David (Murrow who's transferring to Cincy) on the field together after David was subbed late in the 2nd half. I'm getting my sports fix from my Zips while awaiting Fall.
  22. Sounders U23 Defeat SeaWolvesRemain in playoff position with dominant performance The second half brought three more goals: a 53rd-minute penalty kick by Aodhan Quinn; an 84th-minute goal by Darwin Jones; and a goal one minute later by Esteban Potenciano. Another write-up: Sounders U-23 5 - 0 N.S. SeaWolves (RECAP) As play continued in the 12th minute, a long through ball out of the back found Sean Okoli behind the SeaWolves defense. SeaWolves keeper, Claudio Lazar, raced out of the goal to meet Okoli, but he was able to touch the ball past Lazar into the box. Okoli raced to gather the ball on the end line and dropped a ball to an open Aodhan Quinn, but he miss timed his shot, which sailed over the bar for a goal kick. Then in the 19th minute a long throw into the box was collected by Aodhan Quinn. He used his chest to carry to ball forward a couple of paces and past his marker. As the ball dropped toward the turf, he hit a left footed volley with pace on goal, but Lazar was there to knock the ball over the goal. As the second half got under way the SeaWolves came out with some fight. A couple of attacking runs from Aman gave the Sounders U-23 defense some trouble, but in the 53rd minute, the Sounders U-23 put a third goal on the board. Quinn was fouled in the box after beating his man with a cheeky step over and the ref awarded the penalty. Quinn hit the shot with power with his left foot and found the right corner of the net. Only a minute later, Quinn broke loose in the box again and tried to chip the surging SeaWolves keeper, but his attempt skipped just wide of the mark.
  23. Thomas should have been awarded a PK near the end of the match for the take down by the 2 Erie defenders in the box. I also didn't understand the PK awarded to Erie. I don't think Gallego took down the Erie player, nor did I understand going back and awarding the PK after the continuation was allowed which resulted in an offside. How can a ref allow play to continue, then go back and award a PK because the continuation (or advantage, or whatever it's called) didn't work out?! BTW, did anyone happen to catch the glimpse of Schmitty's Mom and Dad on Channel 19 near the beginning of the 10 pm broadcast when they were showing the thunderstorms and their effect on events around the area? Thomas' Mom was holding an Akron Zips umbrella, and his dad was talking with him prior to the match while waiting through the weather delay. Thomas was hidden by the umbrellas.
  24. I've thought about this for sometime now, and there is absolutely no way I can pick a favorite player. We have and have had so many great players; I appreciate all of them playing for Akron and building our nationally recognized program. I will mention that this is the senior season for the 3 remaining starters of the 2010 National Championship game...Scott Caldwell, Chad Barson, and David Meves...as well as Thomas Schmitt who will have given us 5 years, I believe. I hope that Zips fans will show up this Fall in the biggest numbers in program history to help the Zips make this a great season culminating in our 2nd National Championship and sending these guys out on top.
