Will we continue our streak of first-day picks? We have quite a few sleeper-type picks that could do it.

We're the toughest team on their non-conference schedule. Amazing.

Did anybody see him play at the JAR today? He should be on campus.

Former UT RB Tied to Point-Shaving Scheme
ZachTheZip replied to tbozeglav's topic in Akron Zips Football
There are only two possibilities I can think of here: 1. Cartwright is completely clueless when it comes to sports and doesn't realise that the mere mention of dropping football could severely hurt the program.2. She mentioned it on purpose in order to create a decline in the program thanks to worse recruiting leading to worse performance leading to worse fan support. She can't just drop football because she would lose out on a very large percentage of donations to the university, but if you take the program down slowly to the point where it is an embarrasment you just might be able to drum up some support to move down to 1-AA.I think she's just clueless. Why BG hired her after what she did at Can't is a mystery. As for Toledo and the point-shaving thing, what's bad is that they keep implying that there are more names to be named. -
Cant's attempt to counter Zeke
ZachTheZip replied to Class of 82's topic in Akron Zips Basketball Recruiting
He's not listed on any recruiting services. Zeke would eat this guy for breakfast, if Can't actually plays him at all. -

Holy spumoni! This deserves a thread of its own. Never heard about M Thomas' decision in Bearcatland. And at BG, soccer could be dead! (not to mention hockey) You all should know what THAT means -- the MAC will have to find another pretender (is there another Florida Atlantic, or Hartwick out there?), or not be able to compete in a sport where it has a favorite to win a national title. Does the MAC have a Commish yet??If BG drops men's soccer (very, very likely), the MAC still would have the requisite 6 teams in order to maintain an auto-berth to the NCAA tournament. Still, I think the new comissioner could drop men's soccer as a MAC sport in order to save money.Mack Rhoades: get us into the C-USA/Big East for soccer! Please, before it's too late. -

This has been going on for a while now. It's not really bad PR for the MAC as much as it is bad PR for Toledo. It's an internal thing for the Toledo Athletic Department, but the more this drags on the worse things will be for them. Between this and BG thinking about dropping to D-II or dropping football altogether, it has to be scaring recruits away from playing college ball in NW Ohio. Akron needs to take advantage of that. -
You think it's wowing kids now, just wait until they actually start playing games there on Fridays. The kids will be blown away, and the parents will finally be forced to see that UA has transformed its campus.

Yes. That's what I meant.

http://rivalshoops.rivals.com/viewprospect...814&sport=2Cameron Wright DE-committed from OSU today. He was a target for Akron for 2010. He's a 3-star 6'5" SG.

Soccer schedule released
ZachTheZip replied to ZachTheZip's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
I think that attendance for HS games will be up quite a bit. I can guarantee that a large amount of people didn't go to the games because it meant having to go to the Rubber Bowl. The SVSM-Hoban game could have at least 15,000 people in attendance, with some of them there just for the opportunity to check out the stadium. Remember that UA gets a cut of the gate revenue and all of the concessions for all the games played there. -

I'm with you CK. That's the first thing I noticed when I saw this schedule yesterday. It would be great to defeat the Hoosiers in Futbol at Jackson Field on Friday and then defeat them in Football at Summa Field on Saturday. That night will be a busy one on campus. Hoban & SVSM will be playing in the annual matchup at Infocision that night as well.Should we be upset that the first game at Infocision will NOT be the Zips? That feels kinda strange to me.It WILL be the Zips. We're playing Morgan State the week before. I'm not happy about playing them, but it does give an opportunity to have arguably the highest-profile high school football game in the city played on our campus instead of somewhere like Cuyahoga Fall HS stadium. -
http://www.gozips.com/SportSelect.dbml?DB_...amp;SPSID=47177I can't wait for the OSU game. They really do hate us after we beat them twice last year and put their fan base to shame.

My guess is he's being recruited as a TE due to our complete lack of depth at that position. It's pretty cool to be getting verbals so early. You see it happen at bigger schools all the time.

"I'm really glad to be here and in Northeast Ohio," Dambrot said. "Hopefully, I'll be able to coach here my whole life. It's hard to stay in one place for a long time, but I'm going to really try to do that.I love the attitude that he has instilled in this program. Dambrot's creating a winning program the right way. It's a slow process, but I believe that it will work.

We match up well with Penn State's weaknesses. We have a veteran passing game against their new secondary, they lose most of their OL against our much improved DL, and they have a new WR corps so our secondary might stand a chance. It's going to be a high-flying game for both offenses, I think.

I will forever call 1-AA schools 1-AA. The NCAA can put whatever lame marketing lipstick they want on that pig, but it is still 1-AA.I agree. In a perfect world 1-AA would simply be refered to as D-2. D-2 as D-3, and D-3 (Mount Union) as D-4. But that just makes way too much sense. The problem is that the divisions aren't dictated by football. They're designations for all sports of a university. OHSAA has different divisions for different sports, which makes sense based on demographics and participation but it is probably too complex to handle on the scale that the NCAA deals with. It's always going to be 1-A/1-AA or FCS/FBS or whatever politically correct thing they come up with because those schools are in Division 1 for all their other sports.

I like our chances better than the last time we played them.

I would assume that it would be the same surface as we have installed in the Stile Field House, the Rubber Bowl, and the outdoor practice field. Usually a school signs a contract with one company to provide all of its synthetic surfaces, including resurfacing/repairs over a number of years. If we're still under contract with Astro Play for our existing fields, then I can't see us going with a different company for Summa Field.

So are we talking another walk-on?

http://www.cleveland.com/sports/college/in..._hoops_rec.html Anybody have any idea about this at all?
-
You can't see them on the cams, but the dorms are already going up. The foundation was poured a while ago and now the first floor is being built. The sign on the street corner of Spicer and Vine streets said they would open in August 2010. If anybody could get some pics, that would be awesome.

There seems like a gigantic conflict of interest brewing. Boals will still be here when Payne visits this weekend (if he does visit. Maybe this is why we disappeared off his rivals list?). I wouldn't resent Boals nearly as much for leaving if he does his job and trys to recruit Payne to come to Akron while Jeff's still an employee here.
-
I don't think Boals meshes well with OSU's recruiting philosophy. He spent his time here going after good kids with good character. At OSU he'll be recruiting players who both he and the player know will leave the program at the first opportunity for the NBA, players who won't take classes seriously if they take any at all. I know I couldn't do that in good conscience.Leaving one one-and-done tournament team as an associate HC to be an assistant at another one-and-done team seems like a step backwards.
-
It's not difficult to join them at all. You can either go to the office and sign up there, or sometimes you can sign up at games. They even sit at a table in the middle of the Student Union for a week at the beginning of the school year with a sign and a box of shirts in case anybody passes by and wants to sign up. What more do you want?As far as getting people to show up to games, they had somewhere around 1,200 people who signed up but only 50-100 were the dedicated, screaming, jumping students that you see and hear. A good chunk of the students who sat up top at the JAR or in the stands for soccer signed up but didn't want to get involved in the cheering. I think it has a lot to do with the organization being made up of mostly freshmen. Give it a few years when they can pull in large numbers from consecutive incoming freshman classes and you should see what we are all hoping for.Any students reading this but not signed up: you have no idea what you're missing. $10 for the shirt, premium seats to basketball games, and the road trips, oh the road trips. This is where you earn some of those stories you'll tell (or be too embarrassed to tell) years from now when you look back.
