Yikes, and they're back on the march. Gotta be a little nervous about facing this offense. -
Wisconsin Tailgate Party in Madison
apalmison replied to Captain Kangaroo's topic in Akron Zips Football
I was just up there a few weeks ago for a family function. It's a pretty nice town and campus from what I saw. Spotted Cow is pretty omnipresent. They also have a local brewery called Capital Brewery (I think) and a local beer with a pretty funny label called Lazy Mutt. None compared to Great Lakes for me but it's something different so ... meh Thanks for keeping us posted! -
I don't live in Akron anymore but when I go back, I frequently go to 69 Taps. They have . . . imaginatively . . . 69 taps. It might be kind of a dive, but it has such a great beer selection it's worth it. I'd highly recommend anything made by the Great Lakes Brewery (located in Cleveland). If nothing else, be sure to pick up a 6-pack or a 4-pack of Great Lakes before you go back home. 69 Taps

Seems to me that if we want to be respected nationally, we need to beat the big guys. Play to win, however remote that possibility might be.

Thanks for sharing those. That's a pretty cool website, too. I lurked on there for quite a long time yesterday.

..and the saga continues:Rulings likely in land case involving UAInteresting quote in there:"Last week, according to Warren Mendenhall, the attorney for Joe and Mona Nemer, a university attorney told him that UA would walk away from the purchase of his clients' property rather than pay $3.1 million."

Awesome, LeBron. Sign me up for one of the LJ23/UA Jerseys with "Marshall" on the back! BTW, LeBron would have OWNED the Lakers. Why is it that Boston teams keep winning s*it?!

2005 or 2006? It's a pretty simple play on words so it probably existed elsewhere long before that. I'll give you this though, UCONN was the first thing to pop up in a Google search for "'Goal Patrol' soccer" FWIW So did a link for the Juneau, Alaska youth soccer program, though.Looking forward to a good season.

A few thoughts:1) NONE of us would have been on the jury "Do you have any affiliation with the University?" "Yes, I'm an alum." <Buzzer sounds> "Next!"2) Assessed value and FMV are always different, sometimes markedly different. I'm not sure about this but if I remember correctly the assessed value is inadmissible - the jury can't even consider it.3) All that is required in a takings case is for the U of A to pay the fair market value. Cost of moving, loss of business, etc. are all consequential damages and are not available in a takings clause case. Punitive damages are also disallowed. If we were talking about a torts of contract case then they could get more than FMV but a taking is essentially a civil rights case.4) An appeal on the amount awarded would be very difficult. A jury's findings are given very high deference on appeal. We win some we lose some. I thought the U of A bargained fairly and it looked out of whack to me but I wasn't privy to everything the jury was. At least its over.

Check out Top Drawer Soccer

"Ben Speas . . . is TopDrawerSoccer’s® #1 ranked recruit for the Class of 2009. The recruiting process is already over for Speas, as he’s committed to play nearby at the University of Akron for Caleb Porter." 5 Stars, # 1 in the country!?! Wow! On a side note:"Speas was one of the top performers among the 1991 birth year players who made the trip to Argentina."I didn't realize they refer to the recruits by birth year. Birth year 1991 - now that makes me feel old!Nice find, wOOt! Go Zips! -
A Msg from Zeke Marshall's MOM...

Top story on Scout.com! Can't wait to see Zeke in a Zip uniform. Zeke - you're gonna love the Blue & Gold - can't wait for you to teach the MAC to Fear the Roo! -
"I am paying anybody who have read the book 'there are no children here' by Alex Kotlowitz $30-40 which in some classes you have to read at UB (even more money if you have to read the book a little more!!) to write a 3-4 page paper, on a couple of questions which was assigned."Huh?!

Well you didn't fool me with the Notre Dame/MAC story but you got believing there was SOME big announcement coming. Well done, my friend, well done.

I'm hearing that major negotiations have been in the works for months . . . taking place primarily at the Rockne's in Cuyahoga Falls but on two occasions at the West Market location.

Hopefully, they'll have plenty of troughs with ice in them!

Thank you, seniors for a season that exceeded all expectations. You demonstrated heart, grit, and determination in high pressure situations. I hope that that experience proves to be valuable in your future endeavors. KD thanked the seniors after the MACC for elevating the program from mediocrity. I think that hits the nail on the head. Their successes have started what I hope is a long-term strategy of building a solid mid-major program for years to come. Thanks for giving all of us games to be excited about, a team to be proud of, and plenty of material to banter about on this board.BTW - As a relatively new member who doesn't live in Akron - thank you moderators (and all you frequent posters) for dedicating your time and resources to this board. It's very hard to follow the Zips without this forum. To a good season and many more to come!

Here're the game notes from UMass:http://umassathletics.cstv.com/sports/m-ba.../032008aaa.htmlHighlights:UMass-Akron Series NotesUMass and Akron have never played in men's basketball. The schools have played in baseball, with the Zips winning in 1993 and men's soccer, against with Akron winning, 1-0, in 1985.UMass and Akron feature two of the top mascots in the nation. Akron's Zippy was the Capital One Mascot of the Year in 2007. In 2005, UMass' Sam The Minuteman was the National Runner-Up for the Mascot of the Year.UMass is playing its third MAC school this season. The Minutemen beat Northern Illinois, 102-87, on Nov. 10 as part of the BTI Tip-Off Tournament. Then on Dec. 15, UMass downed Toledo, 68-61 at the Mullins Center. Against MAC schools, UMass is 5-4: Buffalo (1-0), Eastern Michigan (1-0), Can't State (0-2), Northern Illinois (1-0), Ohio (1-0), Toledo (1-2).UMass and Akron have played four common opponents this season with UMass posting a 3-1 record against Dayton, Northern Illinois, Temple and Toledo. The Zips are 2-2 against those four teams.

Playing for the Past, Present, and Future
apalmison replied to ZachTheZip's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
Eloquently put. We're also pretty much representing the MAC right now. Can't blowing their NCAA round and two teams in the CBI (1-1 so far) puts us as the highest profile game. Anyone know our record on TV? From what I can remember, it looks pretty bad. It's time to turn that around - no laying eggs on national TV like the team to the east. We know what we're capable of and it's time to show the whole country what we can do. This is an incredible opportunity and I hope we can make the most of it. We're facing a talented and hungry opponent at home but I really believe that we are capable of beating anyone in this tournament. My bracket has Akron beating Ohio State for the final. In my dream, Dials hits a buzzer-beating three to win the game. Let's get there!Go Zips! -
I don't know if I should OR Either way...
