sourceIn Quinn's absence, Frye, Anderson compete for starting jobBy Len PasquarelliESPN.com
Updated: August 7, 2007, 8:50 AM ETWhile first-round draft choice Brady Quinn continues his training camp holdout, Cleveland Browns' quarterback Charlie Frye is simply trying to hold on to the starting job that he owned for much of the past 1½ seasons. And at least nominally, at this point, he's succeeding. To comply with NFL rules, Browns head coach Romeo Crennel issued the team's first depth chart on Monday, and Frye, a third-year veteran, occupied the top rung. Crennel cautioned strongly, however, that the depth chart is barely worth the paper on which it was printed, and would not even commit to Frye as his starter in Saturday night's preseason opener.Crennel even joked that he might toss a coin before the game to determine whether Frye or challenger Derek Anderson, also a third-year pro, would get the starting nod. Apparently, the competition for the starting job in the regular season remains that close.Uncertainty at quarterback is nothing new for the Browns, who have employed five different opening-day starters in the last five years. And through three dozen practices in the spring and now in the first 10 days of training camp, neither Frye nor Anderson has separated himself enough yet to have been vested with the No. 1 job.PD article on same topic

What else is new? It's always fun to look for the roster each fall. Regulars that we were all counting on just vanish for no apparent reason.

Al-Teric Balaam, the talented sophomore linebacker, will not be eligible to play this season
Alex Allen is 100 percent. Those are my words, not the team doctor’s. After seeing him bust a 60-yard run off left tackle today, you’d probably agree
-
Best line:Andy Alleman would be in the NFL and Zwick watching him play I can still remember the four dopey OSU fans behind me at the UA/OSU game telling me "just wait until Zwick gets here"

Take a deep breath there Zippy. It's going to be a long season.Check your local paper

Not everyone agrees with you. There is no wrong or right in this situation, it is preference. I'm not a big fan of that stadium either. While you prefer cement, maybe someone else may find the brick and glass look more appealing.Just because you spend a lot of money on something doesn't make design better. How can you call Ohio Stadium's remodeling ugly? -

How about a drawing to go with the story!??!?!?Well, at least the leakin'had a story on the stadium today.
I guess that's the best you get when you let a YSU fan write "sports" for the

What BCS schools play the 3-3-5, how long have they played it, and where do they rank?
-
Amen brother. They do need to address how to cover the option out of the 3-3-5 so we don't see Edelman (on any QB for that matter) looking like an All-American against us again this year. -
I don't think anybody thinks this is the ONLY way we should make people aware of the team (date & time of the games would be nice.) You actually have to have an interesting brand to advertise to make it successful. I believe the difference between then, and now is the fact that we do have a good brand now (better team, logo, slogan & awareness.)THIS is the time to make the locals aware (or remind them). I'm sure I can afford to put a billboard for three months.I'm sure the University can.Brand awareness isn't the problem. 50% of the people living in NE Ohio probably know UofA has a football team. 95% of alumni living in NE Ohio probably know they have a football team. We've been reminding them with billboards for the past 20 years and nobody came. -
225 hereSenior Jabari Arthur (6-4, 255) 255?! Gotta be a typo, eh? -
Chances are slim and none, and....Quinn is traded for a high draft choice next year. -
I agree with most of what you say. However, a billboard's biggest asset is not direct ticket sales, it is brand awareness. The act of creating public awareness of our specific brand in order to maximize its recognition. If potential ticket buyers do not know about a team, they will not purchase a ticket. The goal of any team should be to build brand awareness, albeit in as cost-effective manner. The benefits of an inexpensive billboard totally outweigh the cost.Even the Portage County Pansies get it.

Okay.I bet if the public knew when, and what time the games where, they might go too.If there was only a way to get a big poster and hang it over a major highway in Akron...now that would be cool. :rolleyes:PS I still remember the Jason Taylor one on Exchange Street a long time ago. I wish I took a photo of that.PSS I will be taking a photo of the new Portage County Pansy one on 43 soon for a new contest, stay tuned...why don't we ALL just go to the games -

Sorry, I did learn something. From Razor's site:By the end of the first week of camp, Akron’s quarterback situation should be a bit clearer. The team will narrow the three-candidate race to two by then, J.D. Brookhart said during yesterday’s MAC Media Day.

Did anybody learn ANYTHING at media day???This was a waste of gas money.I wish they sent Razor.

This article is nothing new (about DH), but it does make me a bigger Jabari fan.Harvey not with ZipsAn interesting note on Akron is that last year's freshman sensation, wide receiver and kick return specialist David Harvey, is no longer on the team because of academic issues.A year ago, Harvey was recognized by The Sporting News, Scripps/Football Writers Association of America, and Rivals.com as a Freshman All-American for his kick returns; he received honorable mention as a wide receiver.Harvey caught 43 passes for 914 yards, which was third best in the country among freshmen. He also set a school record for Zips freshmen with 10 touchdown catches.Additionally, Harvey returned 17 kicks for 510 yards, an average of 30 yards per return, ranking second in the nation.``It's disappointing not having David, but we all have requirements to take care of,'' Brookhart said. ``Unfortunately, that's the way it is, and we're moving on.''The Zips aren't hurting for a featured receiver who can make big plays and be consistent. Senior Jabari Arthur (6-4, 255) led the team last year with 45 receptions and was second with 730 receiving yards. However, his breakout year was in 2005 as a sophomore, specifically in the Motor City Bowl against Memphis. He caught a career-high-tying eight passes -- two for touchdowns -- while setting a bowl record with 180 receiving yards.Arthur missed spring practices because of a foot injury, but he said he's at 100 percent and ready to be a team leader again.``Regardless of the year or personnel, I go into every game thinking I have to step up and make plays,'' Arthur said. And Arthur, who is from Montreal, has a future at the next level. He was the sixth pick in the 2007 Canadian Football League draft, by the Calgary Stampeders.``There was some speculation that I would be drafted by a CFL team, and truth be told, I was very honored when Calgary chose me,'' Arthur said. ``But I'm happy to be coming back playing my senior season. I'm hoping this will be a special year, and I want to go out the right way. Plus, I promised my parents I would graduate, and I'll get my degree in exercise physiology in December.''

8. Do you read message boards or blogs where fans discuss your team?Yes: 39.5%No: 60.5%Notes: For the purposes of this survey, if a player answered "sometimes," it was counted as a "yes" response... Twenty-four players answered "yes" outright, while 23 answered "sometimes." ... Approximately 68 percent of BCS players responded "no," compared to approximately 51 percent of non-BCS players.Quotable: "I read it if I want to have a good laugh," said one Big 12 player.
