WOW...THANKS @TennZip. Brought tears to my eyes to watch that. Fantastic team who deserved better than to have a home NCAA Tournament game taken away from them. 2008 could easily have been the first Zips' appearance in the College Cup since 1986.

We should never forget just how great Steve Zakuani was at Akron.  Stevo deserved a College Cup appearance.  Damned NCAA bastards!

That is the game they moved to Northwestern instead of playing in Akron.  I believe it was really windy that day in Chicago when we lost.

Not exactly.  This is the match BEFORE one that got moved to NW.  This was vs OSU.
On Tuesday before Thanksgiving, we drunkenly stumbled out of BW3 and up Exchange St. to Lee Jackson.  The snow was thick and heavy and the field lights were dark.  Match was postponed to Wednesday and relocated to St. V/M.  Boo!

As the announcer counted down the last seconds of a scoreless 2OT draw….

Zemanski with the free kick and Tutich with the finish header. Game clock expires.  I was standing directly behind the goal nets.  Zips over Buckeyes!   No PKs after all.

One of the best memories of my life.

The NCAA then moving the following match to Northwestern was and still is unconscionable.🤬

it is a loss....when a team loses in the first or 2nd over time

only a draw when it is decided by PK's (in every tournament game ...other than the NCAA final)

Akron loss on PK's to scum bags Virginia in 2009 final ...counts as a loss in that incredible season.

yes, I am still bitter...I can still see dirtbag Diego Restrepo running over with both middle fingers toward the AK rowdies.

    and Restrepo was screaming obscenities

    Still bitter I am.

I watch a TON of European football. The argument for ties in such leagues are much different because it is a table format with other simultaneous competitions such as Champions and Europa leagues, domestic cups, and international team games and tournaments. Players and even entire rosters need the rest. Also, very few inferior European teams "park the bus" to play for a tie for fear of being shamed. Instead, nearly all try to score on fast counterattacks with only 2-4 players committed offensively.

The comparison is not relevant to NCAA soccer. NCAA teams literally play only ~20 games per year, and I have watched many Zips' opponents put all 11 players within 35 yards of goal. It's the epitome of boring and pathetic. From a fan's perspective, and specific to this season, I much would have preferred to risk losing and play OT against Notre Dame, Western Michigan, and Cleveland State. Notre Dame and Western Michigan were top 5 teams at the time, and wins for us would have meant much more than ties, and who wouldn't want to watch more competition between some of the best teams in the country?! Again, nobody plays to tie unless they are an inferior opponent...it's a loser's mentality.

We shall agree to disagree.  As a self-styled football purist, I do not at all mind the strategic draw, regardless of the motivation.  The objective is winning the league over winning the individual contest.  Your point that this is less relevant in NCAA must be taken, I concede.

Straying from the traditional path on one important detail, I strongly endorse the NCAA Sudden Death format in tournament scenario.  It is both definitive and exhilarating!

I also respectfully disagree. The extra minutes reward a team with a deeper bench or more fitness, both of which mitigate injuries. It's up to the coach to manage these risks appropriately.

For mere entertainment value, bring on the Extra Time.  But the fact is that two 10 minute halves of ET rarely breaks the tie.  Both sides usually just hunker down and wait for the end.  The NCAA discovered a few years ago that the score at end of regulation usually is the score at FT.  A longer ET may (or may not) render different results.  But the season is already extremely compact.  The extra strain on players, fans, and infrastructure was correctly identified as a negative cost/benefit.

I would like to recognize and celebrate Malik Henry today.

Josh Hardin was one of the players sitting on 4 yellows.

For the majority of the 2nd half, Josh came out of the game.

Malik moved from right winger to right back...with Maximus Barboto and Jack Roman getting most of the time at right winger

I thought that Malik was outstanding in the 2nd half at right back.

Malik would probably get more all league and all region recognition if he played all of his time at right winger.

Malik probably does not get the recognition that he deserves because he splits his time between right winger and right back.

This Akron fan.....greatly appreciates Malik being a true unselfish team player....and doing what is best to help the soccer zips win.

    Thank you much, Malik.

    Absolutely!

game was at Marquette - 2013

round of 32 - NCAA tournament game

real temp was somewhere in the neighborhood of -5 to -10....

    I was at the game....

wind chill was probably closer to -25 to -35

    field was almost frozen solid

Jake Fenlason was great at stopping shots...but did not have a strong leg

against the wind, his goal kicks did not reach midfield

Marquette had a 6'8 centerback......they used that guy for long kicks

due to the leg of the 6'8 centerback....the ball was mostly played with Akron defending their goal

Akron freshman midfielder(sometimes known as VS8) let the ref know all game that Marquette was getting the advantage on calls...

    game was 0-0 after regulation....

in OT, Reinaldo Brenes was taken down in the box....No PK was called

VS8 let the ref know(as the action was continuing) that was BS

Marquette won 1-0 on golden goal....

after the game, the rather feisty zip midfielder gave the ref an earful.....with some physical contact.

feisty midfielder was rewarded with a multi-game suspension at the beginning of 2014 season and a 2 game suspension from NCAA tourney games in 2014....

and yes, I thought that a PK should have been called when Reinaldo went down in the box

did I mention that it was COLD !!!!

Some physical contact?  Didn't VS8 head-butt the ref in the face?
