  1. Great News. Let's also pray that some of our newer elected officials in Congress wake up soon and stop playing politics with funding for our troops.
  2. Wow. Maybe I don't pay attention, but is that common for an entire athletic program to be put on probation? And for a violation by the tennis team??? That's gotta sting. Well, look at it this way. It may hurt their football recruiting, which gives us another easy win in the MAC East every year besides Buffalo. The downside is that, if they really suck, it doesn't help our SOS for getting consideration in Top-25 voting.
  3. If only the Big East wanted us....Unfortunately, if a rep. from that conference came to one of our football games and only saw about 5,000 people actually sitting in the stands, they'd turn around and go home.Very nice thoughts though.
  4. As is always the case when there is a promotion of this type, the question will be.....If the business community really supports this thing, and buys the tickets, how many people that are given tickets will actually show up??
  5. I agree that playing the lesser schools from the big conferences could be the right strategy. That NC State win last year could have been HUGE if we had carried that momentum through the rest of the season.
  6. That's good stuff. I'll be laughing about that all day.
  7. But let me add one more thing and say that I really hope that I am wrong on this one. It would be a little disheartening to see Akron on ESPN with only 5,000 people in an 80,000 seat stadium. With all factors considered, I am just not too optimistic.Heck, I am even going to have to skip out on a yearly out-of-town Labor Day family function to get to go to this one.
  8. K-Roo. Sorry, when I said that the price bothers me, I was referring to its potential to attract people other than those who would normally go to an Akron game, or those who already purchase Akron season tickets. But thanks for the feedback. I am aware that getting this game ticket through the season ticket package would be a real plus.
  9. Dr. Z.....since you didn't have any 2006 stats listed, here's a recap:75.4 QB rating with 23 interceptions. And I am not a Steelers fan or Browns fan, so I'm not being biased. Just stating the facts.Young QB's really get tested when they have to start actually making some things happen on his own. And he clearly struggled. We'll see what happens from here on out.
  10. I'm going to disagree with the statement that "Akron fans have shown a willingness to travel in large numbers".Folks, that happened when we were playing for a championship. In general, we only have a small group of people going to most of our road games, unless its at Can't. This is a season opener, with no bearing at all on anything. I'm not foreseeing a fan response anything close to a MAC title game, or bowl game.
  11. I like how they say "while supplies last". Army isn't even a big draw if we're playing in Akron, and the tickets are only $10. So, these prices are not likely to draw the curious football fan. These ticket prices appear to be merely a refletion of the stadium that it will be played in. But again, I don't think that the curious football fan is going to jump all over this opportunity. If I recall, Bowling Green played in this game last year. And I was watching it on tv, and I don't remember seeing very many people. I'm not quite sure what these Patriot Bowl organizers expect to gain out of all of this. This looks like one of those things that will draw mostly the die-hard 2,000 to 3,000 Akron fans, and that might be about it. Sorry to be so negative. I'm just not optimistic about this right now.
  12. Sorry GP1, but I'm just not a fan of the argument that you're a great quarterback when your team wins a Super Bowl. Is Trent Dilfer also a great quarterback because his team won a Super Bowl? And what does this say about Dan Marino. Ben's QB rating plummeted last year after they lost some key players form their Super Bowl team, and he was suddenly forced to make things happen offensively. But to be fair, and take the accident into account, I'll say that the "jury is still out" on how good he is. I am wondering if anyone watched Fox8 News last night....Braylon was being interviewed, and he talked something about how picking Quinn was a great addition, and how "all the pieces are coming together" to make them a good football team. After the support he's given to Charlie Frye, do all of you agree that WRs really kiss up to the QBs in the press since they hope it means that more balls will be thrown their way? And since he doesn't know who his QB is going to be, then he feels its in his best interest to speak highly of whichever one he is being asked about at that time?It makes sense to do that, but I was curious if anyone else got the same feeling. On the other hand, it seems that Terrell Owens has not yet mastered this PR skill when it comes to his QBs.
  13. Wow. He's probably already close to being too big to play DE, which leaves only the NT spot in our defensive scheme. I see that he plays TE also. Which makes sense since he has good enough hands to play B-ball. I wonder what his status is as far as who is recruiting him for FB and BB.
  14. However, Ben did find out that he has some work ahead of him to become a good NFL quarterback when he lost his supporting cast after the Super Bowl. Terry Pluto posed the question in the Beacon this morning...something like...."Where would Ben be if he was with the 2004 Browns instead of the 2004 Steelers." It's a good point. For my money, I think Chad Pennington is the best QB to ever come out of the MAC. Braylon's comment does bother me. Like I've said before, if the best NFL players all came from the top colleges, then the NFL would have no need for talent scouts.I do like that Braylon said that Charlie should start being evaluated now. I think that's a fair way to look at this Frye/Quinn situation. Give Charlie a chance now that he has some type of OL and Running Game behind him. In the same Pluto article this morning, Phil Savage admits that Charlie has better mobility than Quinn. That's likely an indication that he won't throw Quinn to the wolves until the OL gets more solidified. You guys are all correct. Notre Dame does schedule some weak competition. And those were some of Quinn's best game.
  15. I hear ya Captain. Let's stay positive and hope this all works out. Since we all have to go up to Cleveland, I was hoping that the early arrivals would all be able to be close together in the Muni Lot to tailgate. But, I have my doubts now since we may all be scattered around, based on where there's available spaces at that time.Let's hope Akronad is right, and most of the air show folks will be leaving by mid-afternoon.
  16. I know that Mike Thomas used to respond to e-mails as well. I don't believe I have ever sent one to Rhodes, so I can't say what my experience has been.
  17. Unfortunately, 4:45 isn't going to help those of us who want to go up there at 2pm to tailgate.
  18. Wow. That confirms what I've been hearing. The air show should pretty much take care of any ideas of parking in the Muni Lot. Unbelievable.
  19. Is anyone else also hearing that the Air Show will be going on that afternoon, and there won't be any place available near the stadium to park? Especially if we go earlier in the afternoon and want to tailgate?
  20. I like the idea of an on-line ticket exchange. I wonder if it would work.Other than that, nothing will change. Those lower seats are the most valuable, and they've been sold in large bunches, mostly to corporate interests, since the JAR opened back when I was a student. I would like to see one section (behind the visiting bench, preferrably) be handed over to students.Speaking of student sections, I'm still baffled that they didn't let you guys sit down closer to the court during the MAC title game at the Q. I'm assuming all of those seats were set up as the more expensive reserved seats, even the ones behind that basket that nobody was sitting in. It just surprises me that they did not designate an area of the lower bowl for students.
  21. zipboy...You may have answered the riddle. I just can't remember who that was who started the chair fight. I remember Mario Bell quite well. He looked to have a great career going, and then fell off the face of the earth.I remember when gozips.com had a "were are they now" link. But I don't remember ever seeing anything on it. I'd like to hear more about Mario Bell's rap career. And frankly, I'd like to know more about what happened to some other guys. I'm friends with some ex-football players from my era in the 80's, so I hear about the football players. But, the ex-basketball players are a mystery to me.
  22. That's the point. This was a desperate move by some desperate people. Schaub wasn't going to come here.Green would have never survived here.
  23. If you had posted something about this game before it was played, you may have gotten a few people that would have added to the thread with comments about how everyone in NE Ohio is a Suckeyes fan, so the stadium will be backed with red and gray-clad fans. And there is no way Akron can compete with the mighty OSU.
  24. That was my assumption. He had to be lacking something if people weren't waving scholarships in his face.I remember the story about the locker room fight and the broken arm. I can't remember anymore, but who was the other player involved in that fight??
  25. I've heard some of you talk about this kid before. But I don't know much about him.The Beacon is reporting this morning that he has agreed to take a walk-on spot on our roster next year. It also indicates that was offered a similar walk-on spot at YSU. That seems odd to me that a 2nd teamer that scored 24 points per game isn't getting scholarship offers from D-1 schools. I'm not quite sure why this would be the case, unless he has limited skills. Can someone shed some light on this for me?
