ZipAlumn...I hear part of what you are saying, about the scheduling....How was it that Can't got a HOME GAME against us to close the season? That's not a coincidence. The league knew that we'd be the best two teams, and helped put Can't into position to win it on their home floor. Fortunately, that didn't happen.But...let me tell you why we aren't getting into the NCAA Tournament. And it has nothing to do with the conference we play in.1) We have no wins to show over ranked teams, and many of the other bubble teams have multiple wins over ranked teams. Sure, I understand Dambrot's point about not wanting to play a ranked team on the road. But, if that's the stand he is taking, then we have few chances to beat a ranked team.2) When you have a non-conference loss like our loss to Arkansas Little-Rock, who unded up being a sub-.500 team. That doesn't help. 3) We still had a remote chance to make a statement to the NCAA by posting late road wins at Toledo and Miami, and lost both games.

Let me add a few things...First of all, that #4 spot (as I said in a post a week ago) was going to be the best spot in this tournament. It meant that you would be playing a weak Toledo team in the semis, and then get the winner of a dogfight between Can't and Akron in the finals. And now I am sick that it actually worked out that way.I feel bad for Cedrick Middleton. He probably feels the weight of the loss, but frankly, we missed several opportunities down the stretch to put that game away. That's one of the luckiest shots I have ever seen decide a game. And maybe, as we keep looking at this over the next several days, we'll find out that it should have never counted anyway. And, as we've known all along, someone needs to SERIOUSLY take a look at MAC officiating. Miami should have gotten a technical for running onto the court before the game was over. I'm not going to judge Keith Dambrot based on one big-game loss.

SGM...how about...Fear This (with that stupid bird logo below it). I've seen that one too. They can't come up with their own, so they just come up with something negative about ours. It's all they are capable of. It's why

You guys will love this. The MAC's own official website says this about tomorrow night's championship game..."In their only matchup during the regular season, Akron edged Miami of Ohio 54-52."Does this mean that our loss at Miami a couple of weeks ago does not count? That would be nice. I can't believe our own league site doesn't know that we play every team in our division twice.Funny.

The only thing that sucks right now, besides Can't, is that we won't have any time to enjoy this one.The looks on the faces of the Can't fans, players, and coaches is something that I will cherish for the rest of the my life. What do we call it? Stunned? Shell-shocked? confused? bewildered? That Can't team COMPLETELY FOLDED in the 2nd half. That was a major CHOKE, and I enjoyed every minute of it. I think a few of their players and cheerleaders were crying too.I loved it.

Guys, there's no doubt about one thing...and I sure hope KD pounds this home to the boys during pregame....THE ONLY THING THAT KEPT Can't IN THE FIRST TWO GAMES WAS OFFENSIVE REBOUNDS.Without them, we would have blown them out BOTH times.BOX OUT......PLEASE !!!!

Attn: RowdiesI have a suggestion for tonight.Back when I was in high school, our basketball team was in a tournament, and we were winning semifinal game, and started chanting "We want (their name)" to the team we were going to play in the finals.Well, the next night, we got out butts kicked and they started chanting "You Got (their name)"Anyway...I heard that Can't was chanting "We Want Akron" last night. So, when we start kicking their tails tonight, I'd love to hear some "You Got Akron".Just a suggestion.

I love how a Can't fan can come on here and just start talking, having absolutely no basis for what he's saying.Dude.....we beat you TWICE this year. INCLUDING A WIN ON YOUR HOME COURT. And we are now MAC East Champions. And you think we belong in the OVC??At the very WORST, we end the season winning 2 out of 3 against Can't, and go into next season as the DEFENDING champs of the MAC East. If you look at the facts, it looks like Can't should try playing in the OVC.

Sure, there's certainly more Suckeyes fans in Ohio than fans for any other school. But Ohio has plenty of people that are dedicated to one of the many MAC schools also. Honestly, Ohio State's biggest competitor for fans in Ohio is, unfortunately, Michigan. Especially if you live up in that NW corner of Ohio, around the Toledo area. It's actually pretty well split between Ohio State and Michigan, and I know quite a few Suckeyes fans up in that area that would vouch for that being the truth. However, I really don't care. I've lived in Ohio for over 40 years, and I am a Zip fan, and couldn't care less what happens to anyone else.Of course, I wish Alleman had not said that. But he's played in front of an empty Rubber Bowl enough times that he (and I can't blame him) probably doesn't feel like he owes any loyalty to Akron.

I've had ankle problems, and it seems that most of the time, if it is going to swell, it usually does it fairly quickly. He could have gotten it re-taped before it swelled. But either way, if it was serious, even if he stayed on it and kept it loose, it would still hurt like hell every time his heel touched down hard on the floor. So, my guess is, it's probably not a bad sprain. Let's just hope 24 hours, and some ice and some whirlpools, will get him ready to go.

I don't think the season is a failure if we lose tonight. Anything can happen in the MAC, and usually something crazy does happen. Look what's happened to us over the years? This game will have some historical significance, because this year signals the beginning of the end of Can't's run as the King of the MAC East. There's a new sheriff in town.......and his name is Zippy. and will be watching the NCAA tournament from home while we are playing. It's about time.
-
Man, I'm so tired of going to all of these MAC tournaments, only to walk away with a sick feeling when we didn't get it done. It's been 15 years now. Let this be the year we finally get it done !!!!

Ya...I forgot about that Wagon Wheel. That football game was embarrassing, I was there. It's time for them to pay !!No foul trouble.Keep Can't off the offensive glass. We do these two things, they can't beat us.

Akron-Central Michigan: Game Predictions
skip-zip replied to sgm405's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
We'll learn from the lethargic way we played against them two weeks ago, and win this one going away. They can't continue to shoot like they did last night. And they have absolutely no answer to our strength inside. Plus, we play defense...unlike the Bulls. Akron 78-53 -
I agree. Anytime anyone says "Akron", it's accomplishing something. Even if I do have to cringe a bit when they say "Akron U".This is what we should do...My fiance went to Memphis. Down there, they don't say "Memphis U.", or "University of Memphis", or anything like that. They just say MEMPHIS.....and everyone knows that you are talking about The University of Memphis. Hopefully, with what has happened in the last couple of years, we are moving closer to the day where we can say AKRON, and everyone will know what we mean, without saying anything else.

Oh Gosh Zip Alumn........I sure hope the students at Akron today don't have to take Western Cult !! Please tell me it's not so!!!!

Aligning schedule to stadium timeline

You're right. It was a sunny September day, and Charlie Frye played well. He relieved Nick Sparks, who later ended up being a pretty good receiver. I think the final score was only 28-14. -
Hey Students.....Let me just urge all of you not to miss out on this opportunity in Cleveland this week. I spent my senior year at Akron being fortunate enough to experience our last conference championship in 1986. I'm now in my 40's, and certainly thought it would happen again long before now, but it never did. But if you've been reading the posts, I have very vivid and exciting memories of that year. I even still have some of the newspaper articles!!!Now....we're in great position to win this thing this year!! So don't miss out !!GO TO CLEVELAND...and...GO IN HUGE NUMBERS. If we can create a home-court atmosphere in Cleveland, we'll walk out of there with the MAC title and a bid to the NCAA tournament.Then....you can have a lifetime of stories to tell about the experience, just like those of us here on the board that were students at that time.
-
We all know that our out-of-conference schedule was weak. In fact, it was one of the weakest in the country. However, it is nice to see that not all of them were practice games. There was actually a couple of other pretty decent teams in there besides Nevada. It really is hard to imagine that our FIRST game of the season will end up being the one that was the most costly in the end. If we had beaten UA-Little Rock, we would have had a chance to play in another game that would have either given us a chance to beat a good team, or at least raised our SOS and RPI.

Aligning schedule to stadium timeline

The last I heard, the goal is to have the stadium finished for the '09 home opener against Kentucky.Getting Ohio State to play a road game in Akron is.......a 0% possibility. But we'd have an SEC team. Not bad. -
I was sitting on the floor for a game earlier this season, and noticed something very interesting.....Porky was having some trouble walking, and was getting escorted back and forth from his seat in lower reserved by a high-ranking member of the athletic dept. That's how much this University loved him, and his contributions to the school. He is indeed Mr. Akron.
-
I see your point. I think what he's saying is true. But, what was the point of writing an article to point out the weaknesses of a team that is 24-6? Is he a graduate of a school that we will be playing this week, and wants to help them out?
-
skhorbotly....interesting point.Your theory seems logical until you get to the part where playing in a weaker conference means that you have to fill up your roster with weaker talent. But sure. I'd love to be playing in their conference right now, with our talent.

A Little Akron Tourney History
skip-zip replied to Captain Kangaroo's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
Captain......K-Roo..........I was a senior in 1986, and remember those times as well.Do you also remember that many of the students in GA were wearing headbands that said "Muse", and other names, to copy Chicago quarterback Jim McMahon, who had worn a headband that said "Rozelle"?Do you remember everyone chanting "We Want Duke" at the end of the Middle Tennessee championship game (Duke was the #1 team in the country at the time). And how about (if you were in the Chuckery during our first-round NCAA game) when everyone went NUTS when Marcel Boyce hit that turn-around jump shot just before halftime to give #15 seed Akron the lead against #2 seed Michigan (or was that #14 vs #3 - it's been too long to remember). After the program has been virtually sleeping for the last two decades, I would love to see the current students get to experience some of what we had.Oh....and K-Roo...I would go to one of those rickety stores on exchange that had Drummond Bros. for something like $7 a case. Ah....memories.
