The Zips held Miami to just 7 points in the last 10:50 and just 4 points in the last 8:32.

Wow, did not realize it was that bad.  Were we that good on defense, or did Miami run out of gas, or did they choke.  It does not make a difference.  We made some clutch plays and deserved the win.

  2. Ironic, how many times last year did Groce pull Tevari for bad defense.  In the last possession Tevari played his best defense of the game.  A quick outlet and Nate was off to the races.  That is 2 games in a row that we won the championship in the last seconds of the game.  Was anybody else having nightmares when the Miami player hoisted  a prayer from beyond half court?  Now lets win our first NCAA game.

  3. I think we are something like 2 for 10 on three pointers and a lot of the threes were forced and not clean looks.  Need to be patient and shoot the threes off a pass and not force it.  This team going 9 deep was built to take over the 2nd half.  Go Zips!!!!

  4. You have gozips.com credit: They certainly know how to encourage Zips fans to attend Rocket arena and watch the Zips get to NCAA tournament with the following headline banner:

As an extra FU, the NIT selection show the next day on ESPNU went to their first commercial saying, "Coming up, find out who ABC U, XYZ State, and AKRON will be playing in the NIT (little Akron highlight montage plays)!"

And then we weren't selected at all. Anyone else remember that? 26-7 and no post-season.

For any newer fans or young'uns....besides Middleton, that team was lead by Romeo Travis and Dru Joyce III, two local Akron kids (high school teammates of LeBron) that were charismatic, likeable and so, so, so good. This was before the CBI and other smaller post-season tourneys existed.  I haven't loved a Zip team as much as I loved that one.

And they also showed that shot and Akron in the leadup to the NIT selection show.   I remember watching that show and being disappointed that they did not get an invite.  The team later had a picture signing for that team.  A person in my office gave me a picture of the team.  As a result of Akron not getting selected, the NIT made a new rule that conference champions would get an automatic invite to the NIT.  And last year they tossed that rule.

Zips should be a sure thing in my book opening round ...  the other three games all have some level of upset potential. Beware of Western ... they beat Kent, Eastern and Miami during the regular season.

Cannot get rid of the above post.  Help!!!  I have it on the app.  No commercials!!!

  7. Please ignore above post.  Could not get it off my screen.  Our best player and MAC player of the year went 1 for 9 and only scored 3 points and we won by 30.  However, Nate had 8 rebounds and 5 assists.  He also had the plus 25 while on the floor which led the Zips.  Hope he has a better shooting day tomorrow.

On a completely unrelated note, I met a guy at the game whose job was to record player stats in real time and he told me he would be there all day doing all 4 games. He said there were at least 10 other people doing the same thing as him for different companies.  He indicated it was gambling related and that the stats on ESPN were delayed by 30 seconds.  I guess the gambling companies need all the stats in real time to adjust the odds as the game progresses.  He told me the job paid $200 a day but he loved it because he loves basketball.  I just found this bizarre.

I went to one of his summer basketball camps when I was real young and if I'm remembering correctly, he was a real piece of work. I remember a lot of yelling. The players were nice but he was something else.

On the flip side, I attended KD's basketball camps and holy crap what a difference. KD's staff was always so incredibly nice. To this day Lamont Paris is one of the nicest sports figures I've ever met. Not to mention the players - Quaide Milum, Dru Joyce, Jeremiah Wood, Cedric Middleton, Steve McNeese, etc. - all very kind. Those were core memories from my childhood. Ended up playing on the same 3v3 team as Larry Nance Jr. He was special even back then. Watched him do a drill once where he was 1v2 dribbling the ball up the court. Defenders were next to each other at half court to slow his momentum. He faked one direction, dribbled the ball between his legs from behind, and split the defenders for a breakaway dunk. Completely off topic but since we're reminiscing...

Made a great impression on you but not KD as the rumor was that big Larry lobbied KD to give little Larry a scholarship but it did not happen.

We are careful to bring in guys who fit our team and our culture. We are careful of red flags. We want guys with the right work ethic and attitudes.”

This statement is why Groce should not leave and will not be successful at the next level.  Listen to our student athletes during the post game interviews.  They are smart, articulate and will graduate with a degree.  As a Zip fan, I appreciate how well our basketball team represents the U both on and off the court.   Further, we have all seen how hard they have worked to improve their game from last year.  However, this team would not do well at the Big Ten level.  If Groce leaves, he will have to lower his standards to find those players that can excel at the Big Ten level.  I think Groce loves working with scholar athletes.   If it is between money and enjoying your job, I think Groce is smart enough to stay at Akron.

Kostelac and other guy was what, Groce’s 2nd year? Am I forgetting something?

It was Groce's 2nd year and the other player was Khadim Gueye.  Kostelac was a  bench player and it was Groce's 2nd year and after this incident Kostelac transferred to Walsh.  He sued Akron and Groce after the incident but I do not believe the suit was successful.

No such thing as a sure thing except there will be a basketball game between the Zips and Bowling Green on Thursday.  And in 2020 that sure thing did not even happen.
