  1. You have a hat made out of apples and oranges? Did NE Ohio turn into Havana since I left?
  2. I agree. Trying to help the University isn't enough. Positive energy isn't enough. It isn't a high school. It's a major university in a large state and too many people see it as the high school that if there were just enough volunteers it could really go places. The professionals need to get the job done, not the volunteers. Gerry tried to help the University years ago and failed as a football coach. In a sane world, the guy gets fired and moves on and away from the University they work for. In the UofA world, this guy is given a job outside of his ability, a key to an office with free office supplies and a free pass to as many sporting events as he would like for the rest of his life. Gerry Faust is an ongoing reminder of failure for everyone who sees him at University events. Is the a positive guy? Yes...he is also one of the biggest mooches in history. The University and alumni at UofA need more results and less holding hands and singing "We Are The World".
  3. TW sure did hire Bowden after he botched the Winters offer. Basically, hiring TW was his only option. I don't give people credit for hiring "decent" coaches. Porter left as soon as a better opportunity arose. We'll see in the next few months if signing KD long term was a good idea. TW is a complete failure. There is nothing wrong with someone being distant. There is something wrong with the people who think they know someone from a chance meeting at a rubber chicken lunch or from what they hear from those at the rubber chicken lunch.
  4. Let me first add a +1,000,000 on your comment that my post was outstanding. With that said, no, like tens of thousands I stopped watching local news years ago andi don't live in NE Ohio.
  5. Isn't he the same guy who hired wistrcill? Can we really trust him at this point? My understanding is he is distant with the people who work with him. Nobody really knew the guy or knows the guy. Many wanted to believe the really knew him, but most didn't. It's how the con man gets over. They dupe the willing. There have always been rumors about Tressel possibly wanting some sort of public life in politics. Taking a public job at Akron isn't a bad way to stay in front of the public for a couple of years. I think the guy could easily win a statewide election in Ohio. It's similar to Hillary Clinton taking Secretary of State while she bides her time to run for president again. He has to stay in the spotlight though. Giving speeches while drawing a check isn't a bad way to do it. It's extremely smart in many ways. A guy with his loose association with honesty and integrity would fit in we'll in politics.
  6. He also had the highest season winning percentage of any season since we moved to D1A. Never the less, he was still pretty terrible. I don't think he was the worst ever, but there are 14 years of evidence for anyone who thinks he was. Most guys that bad never get more than seven years to prove how bad they are.
  7. Help with what? The Indians? Is that what we are paying him $200k a year to do? He behaves more like a guy setting himself up to run for public office more than a guy working for the University. He would easily win central Ohio in a statewide race. What is the next largest market? Oh, ne Ohio. Where could he find an employer willing to be Conned by this guy?...oh, Proenza et al. Tressel has a loose association with honesty and integrity. Don't think the motivation for working at Akron isn't a front for something else.
  8. I can't disagree with the logic. The question is what we should do about it. My guess is in the next few years, the BCS schools are going to do to us what we can't seem to do for ourselves, and that is a separation from them on a structural level. We, meaning non BCS schools, won't do anything because the ADs don't want a retraction on their resumes especially if it makes sense. The BCS schools will do it because it makes sense and more money. Like it or not, there are lots more changes ahead. I think we are seeing the beginning of changes and not the end.
  9. It may have been. The interesting thing is the motivation. My guess is the priest who made this decision really believed it would help ND. When ADs strike today, they do it to advance their careers regardless of whether or not the school benefits. Athletic Departments are run by horrible people trying to get rich on the backs of an exploited labor force.
  10. Congratulations to Tressel et al for helping to bring in a career .256 player now on the wrong side of thirty. I guess "coming home" is a good enough reason to play for a team that is willing to overpay for your services. Nice work Tressel. You are money well spent.on what, I have no idea. How long will it be until NE Ohio fans begin to see Tressel as the savior of the Indians and begin to call for him to be manager of the team?
  11. The are good questions and easy to answer. When the super conference is complete, the bottom dwellers in those leagues will continue to be bottom dwellers unless they can manipulate scheduling to require more difficult schedules after a good season. When the super conference comes around, there will be no more bowls. Every division will have a playoff. How people feel about anything will become irrelevant when the super conference is created. It will be a shameless exercise in money grabbing. ADs for the non super conference schools will have to find ways to make money other than whoring out their teams for a couple of games a year.
  12. A super conference with teams required to only play one another and a playoff will take cupcake September out of the picture for these teams. A playoff makes going undefeated much less critical.
  13. I have Wake season tickets for football. Makes me feel good when they win. Doesn't bother me much when they lose. I don't know if that makes me a fan or not. I would define myself as an "interested party". If you think the money is big in ticket sales now, wait until teams like Alabama, etc. figure out they can sell tickets to a September Alabama vs. say OSU game for $350/per ticket and sell out their stadium.
  14. If "no", he should be notified within the next couple of months. That will allow us to start a search and him to start looking for his next job selling tickets for a minor league baseball team.
  15. There will be huge money in no longer playing non-BCS schools. My Wake Forest tickets already have different pricing depending on the quality of opponent. Imagine what could be charged for tickets for a September Alabama vs. Texas game, or something like that. There will be huge money in ticket sales. There will be huge money in Foundation donations necessary to get some of those tickets. There will be huge money in parking for those games. Most importantly, there will be huge money in selling TV advertisements for those games. When the super conference is created and the money begins to roll in, schools won't be saying, "What were we thinking?" They will be saying, "Why the heck didn't we do this sooner?"
  16. Probably the best position. I have long advocated non-BCS schools actively leaving the level of play BCS schools play in, but I don't think there is the will or vision from the Presidents or ADs of those teams. It's hard for an AD to put on his resume, "Successfully moved my school from D1A to 'Tier X'", and the Presidents are the ones who were convinced new stadiums and practice facilities were all they needed to compete in D1A so they did it and if they undo it now, they look like even bigger fools for being duped by the witless people that are ADs. In almost every way, it is hopeless for non-BCS schools...and for many BCS schools as well. In the end, we (meaning most non-BCS D1A schools) are going to get moved and not make a move of choice.
  17. I hate an either/or discussion. Change is going to happen and I don't see it as an FCS vs. FBS debate. At some point, a number of schools are going to decide they would like their own super division and those of us at the non-BCS level are going to stuck with our peckers in our hands. The question then will be I-AA or something in between I-AA and whatever super division is created. The handwriting is on the walls and it's going to happen at some point.
  18. Agree completely. There is absolutely nothing on TV between Christmas and New Years. There are many people who love going to games and watching a game even if it is somewhat meaningless. Bowls provide entertainment in a period where there is scarce entertainment. In our lives, there will be no more bowl games and the holiday season will be made worse because of it. Holiday TV entertainment will go from watching football to watching Skip Baylesslike people talk about football....no thanks.
  19. I can tell them what they did. They took a step towards sanity in the NCAA.
  20. Or, one could call it contrived nonsense.
  21. We are NOT bring back Jim Dennsion!!!!!!
  22. Atlantic Ten
  23. They are allowed to earn up to $2,000. There is no reason they shouldn't be allowed to earn more. They are adults.
  24. People always want to believe the con man more than the con man is good at being a con man.
  25. Something tells me Swisher has $50 million more reasons to play for Cleveland than Tressel. Tressel and Urban M. getting involved in something like this is just stupid beyond words. Really, what's the point? He's a 32 year old major league baseball player with an actress wife who has played for one of the top three sports franchises in the world and has a World Series ring....not a 17 year old high school kid.
