I think you are reading to much into a lull. This is the MAC, and in the MAC, teams go through lulls. It does have a lot to do with talent, but UofA is still one of the most talented teams in the league.I don't like to look at years as points on a graph to be measured against the previous year. I like to look at what I call a "range" of performance. UofA is still performing in a good range based upon what their realistic possibilities are. As long as they continue to perform in that range of good, KD needs no discussion from the AD.In a few weeks, we will be playing in Cleveland for the championship. I would rather be going through a mid-season lull than a tournament lull. It's about the trend. We will know if the Zips are ready for the tournament if they win their last five or six games and go to Cleveland with some momentum.The only thing I'm concerned about is the record. I really thought they would be better than 17-7 right now. They only lost one player off of the team last year and have a high school all American on the team. Maybe I expected too much after winning the MAC, but I didn't think they would have so many L's at this point in the season.You know, I might rustle some feathers with what I'm about to post, but it's just my opinion. If I'm the AD, I'm telling Dambrot his seat is getting a little warm. Don't get me wrong, I was happy with the win, but let's face it, his coaching has been subpar for a stretch now, and it's happened 2 years in a row. Yes, players make mistakes that coaches can't control, and yes, coaches make mistakes, but I'm not seeing any learning from the mistakes. For 4 years we've had pretty much the same game plan. Teams are starting to figure out how to stop us. It doesn't look like Dambrot is adapting. For example, we finally started to press against Toledo, but then we stop because it's working. Plus, it seems to me that we continue to ignore the one thing that can win a game: putting the ball in the basket. Again, Dambrot preaches defense, which is a good thing to a point, but I think he's ignored the shooting aspect of the game a little bit. -
For example, what happened in the Reno recruiting investigation the University was performing? Is it unreasonable to believe the Beacon has asked nothing about this in recent months? They made it a huge story so why wouldn't they want to continue until the end?When you try to control the media, bad things get reported. An open relationship with the media makes it much easier to control than a combative relationship. I would like to know what the relationship the school has with various media outlets.I find these questions as difficult to answer as Mike Ditka finds finishing sentences.
That's a two-way street! Sure, it would be nice if the Columbus Beacon Journal dug deep into UA sports and actually published them on the front page of the sports page.But does UA really want them to? And how much will they really cooperate?Rather than Rasor, I would much rather that a real reporter at the Leaking Urinal cover the Zips consistently. The coverage of UA sports has been better in the last year than it had been before, but that's not saying much. The decrepit little paper that seems to cover only pain and misery can't send someone 3 blocks down the street to get deep into UA and its sports programs? We have to rely on a wannabe politician to sporadically post about the Zips?That, as they say, is the big time fellas. -
There was a really good segment on this today on Game Day. Everyone was against expanding the tournament to 96. Some said everyone should play the same number of games so 128 would be reasonable.I like it the way it is. It's a national championship tournament, not a let's make everyone feel good tournament. Want to create more energy in college basketball? Go back to every team has to win their league tournament to get into the Big Dance. Make the conference tournaments mean something again for the bigger conferences. I'm not sure why the constant growing of everything is always the answer to a perceived problem.

I can think of several, but they are all in the MAC. It isn't just the Zips, the MAC has become so bad that the best we can hope for each year is to not be run off of the field during bowl season. CMU saved the MAC from another disaster of a bowl season. I hate to say never, but I don't think there will be another Marshall-like MAC school again. I always tell you guys my wife makes really good points about the MAC and she made one last night that made me think about your comment. Where have all the great MAC players gone? And by great, where are the Roethlisbergers, Leftwiches, Penningtons? Lefevour was not the player these guys were, but his team won a lot because there just are not any stars in the MAC to take another school to a higher level. Specifically, she was talking about technology contributing to the change in college football. Players are no longer flying under the radar because of all the film on the internet. A guy like Roethlisberger would not go unnoticed regardless of his not playing QB until his senior year in HS. I know it hasn't been that long since he was in college, but try to think about nine years ago and what little information a fan/team could get about a player compared to today. That time period goes back even more for Leftwich and Pennington. I don't know what you guys think, but the world/college football has changed much faster than I expected.There aren't three or four D-1 teams in the entire country who I would bet on the Zips to beat. -
Well said. The once every few years win is not worth the endless beatings. I just don't see how this schedule is a good one.....why can't we guarantee wins at the beginning of the season like BCS schools do with their schedules?College football has changed drastically in the past few years. It is now a system designed to support BCS level schools. The gap between BCS schools and non-BCS schools is greater than ever by design.The Zips will start out next year 1-3. Coachers will dust off their tired chiches (ie: "The coach has lost this team"). The Zips will be right back to where they have been the past few years. The stadium will be empty, the EMU game empty, for the remainder of the season. My worst nightmare is after the two consecutive road games against IU and UK, the MAC will have us playing a road MAC game.....again. Our AD needs to make certain this doesn't happen.No top-15 butt whippings, but three bottom-30 butt whippings.If we go 1-3, it is very much the schedule's fault. Three BCS teams in the first four games has to stop. I don't care if they're the three worst BCS teams or the three best. The worst BCS teams are on par with very good non-BCS teams like CMU and Troy. Sure, you might get one win in three if you're lucky, but you're more likely to start off the MAC season demoralized and beat up. -

And they just kept making Milton's life more and more miserable, hoping he would finally get the hint and leave. Seems like a pretty good parallel for a Can't State football coach. Wonder if Martin has noticed any boxes being stacked in his office yet?\Milton and Martin.....good parallel! After all they both have been heard to mutter something to the effect of "burn the building down". -

Rasor posted this article on his blog about what the coach at Can't had to say about one of his recruits. Mike's response is a good one. How Martin keeps his job is beyond me. Maybe the administrators at Can't think he will go postal if he is fired. Maybe he has been fired and keeps showing up for work like that strange guy in the movie Office Space....I think his name was Milton.Mike also posts a note to KD. Strange and unnecessary note if you ask me. First of all, Rasor should not be saying "your magesty" to anyone, even in jest. If you can afford to, substitute liberally early in a game. Players are humans and not robots so they become tired.Getting a lead early in a game is critical in any sport. In basketball, it allows a coach to rest his players. If you have a 12 point lead and rest your starters, the other team has to leave their starters in to try to catch up. If they catch up to say four, then put the starters back in. The other team will be tired from trying to catch up and the starters can expand the lead again.Basketball is a game very much like hockey in there is constant motion. Rest is critical.
I agree also. He has a tendency to sub in 3-4 players at a time, which makes no sense. You have a good run going, momentum and chemistry working, if a guy is tired sub him out but not all of them. I feel like I'm watching hockey with all the line changes!
I couldn't agree more. Many a game have been lost by the Zips in the past few years due to KD not riding the momentum his players build. The way he runs things it's hard for shooters to get into any sort of rhythm.KD could learn a thing or two about riding the hot hand. He kills guys momentum time and time again with his substituting and insistance on playing 10-11 guys. -
I'm not much of a moralist, but I remember people used to wear things that had WWJD on them. I wonder if he would see the inequity in the current situation and be offended by it, or if he would see the inequity as a method of setting standards of right and wrong behavior. Just kind of typing out loud.....
Pesky moralists. Always preaching about trying to maintain higher standards of right and wrong behavior...... Moralist guy needs to stay away. If moralist guy had any real morality, he would see the inequity and demand the players get paid on some level beyond the scholarship. -
I really don't disagree with some of what you are saying.I repeat. There already is no money for the remaining teams. Most schools at our level function at a loss. UofA brings in less money than it spends for athletics. We actually have less than no money. We have so little money we have to be boosted by the tax payers of Ohio.We do have to whore ourselves out. That's the problem. It is something I find distasteful not just for UofA, but for all of college sports. It irks me that so many of the big schools are taking advantage of the little schools for glorified scrimmages. It irks me that those same schools force their fans to pay to watch that tripe.College football would become as competitive as the NFL week in and week out in my system. The high level of competition is what makes the NFL so good.My system rewards the best teams over the past 40 years, not recent history.The MAC has been in business since 1946. It is truely a black hole.I think a lot of you are missing the point about my post. My system is much more about increasing competition and not as much about money. I think the competition at the highest level would be great to watch. I also think that the competition at whatever level UofA fell into would be much better to watch as well. Every week UofA would have a winnable game and a meaningful game.I repeat that there would be no money for the remaining teams. You bemoan the "Whoring out" of the football team but these games are important to the program for a multitude of reasons not the least of which is revenue. Without these games the entire athletic department would be hurt. This action could actually cause a reduction in sports at UA. This is a bad idea for UA and for any non super conference team. You're attempting to turn the NCAA into another NFL. Every year we have upsets and that's what makes college athletics so interesting and exciting. Your plan rewards the largest schools at this time in history and ensures that no other school would ever escape the black hole that would be the remaining teams. Bad, bad idea. -

You were dogging their offense. I point out how wrong you were. We weren't talking records. The defense (which you don't need a great one according to the Tiny gp1) is what caused the team to be 6-6. Additionally 6-6 for a "Dollar General" school as you often bring up, would be quite a step forward, 1-2 wins away from being in the MAC Championship as you often point out.But keep on going Yankee Driver one day you'll get it screwed on right.

They lost to Navy, USC (fifth place PAC 10), an overrated Stanford...It takes a lot more than a simple rankings chart to out smart the Great GP1 g-man. Now go to the back of the bus where you belong. You're no match....you're not even close.
Oh yes, please don't curse us with 5300 total yards offense 43 touchdowns and 19 field goals. Especially after our super potent season of 3600 total yards 26 touchdowns and 7 field goals. And please don't make us the 8th best offense in the nation like Notre Dame was. Our 113 was so much better.

JD has 250,000 reasons to sit out a year if he wants and wait for the next job.People from Pittsburgh are hard headed. The don't like Harris because they wanted a "Pitt guy" to take over the team. They got their wish. The last year Harris was at Pitt they went 10-2 and to a BCS game. They haven't been back since. They finished third in the Big East last year. They don't like Harris because they don't want to admit they were wrong.....I've been wondering lately when we might see where JD will eventually surface, and I stumbled upon this oddity (link). Evidentally a Pitt fan was reading FootballScoop.com a while back when Syracuse's HC Marrone was rumored to be talking to JD. Apparently it was all baloney. I know some of us were greatly puzzled over the Getsy to Pitt, Getsy to Akron, Getsy to Pitt story. So we're not surprised. Sure, part of this is just the nature of the beast (trying to get the "scoop"). But I thought it was interesting to read this warning from another camp nonetheless. The Panther fan didn't care too much for Harris or JD.LinkBTW I hope JD does land something soon, just so he gets to stay in the game. There was so much turnover this off-season, but you would think things have stabilized quite a bit by now. Maybe an NFL job still awaits. But Shanahan brought his kid from the Texans as the new Redskin OC. It looks like all the position coaches have been filled in Washington as well. -

You're a better poster than this.The point isn't to play the Malones of the world, we have our basketball team to do that for us. How about a FAU or someone along those line? That is a more competitive game and makes more sense. UofA needs to play more home games and less ass kickings on the road. Let's see....75% of OOC games against BCS teams. Coachers are going to be so excited when the team starts 1-3. They'll be packing butts in the stadium after that start.For the love of Christ, would someone please stop setting this team up for disaster at the beginning of every season. There isn't a single program at UofA that plays the percentage of difficult teams the football team does. This needs to stop. It isn't helping.

Good questions.I believe that an adult should be able to earn some income for their services. College football players are providing a service to their schools that in the top 40 schools earns those schools millions each year. It isn't like high school where a small number of people go to games, buy a five or ten dollar ticket, eat a hotdog, watch a game and go home....very little money is spent. When someone goes to a big time college football game, tickets are much more expensive, donations in the thousands of dollars have to be given for some seats, parking lots are full of thousands of cars that had to pay to park, merchandise is sold with the players numbers on them, etc.I find it almost immoral that college football players at the highest level don't get paid. We are talking about adults here, not children. I think people lose sight of that when they watch college football. The players are sometimes referred to as "kids". They aren't kids, they are grown men participating in an event that is making millions for someone else. The pressure is tremendous, especially from the coaches who are getting paid to coach.In reality, $12,000 a year is at the poverty level in the United States. Some college football players have children. While they can't support them on $12,000, it probably helps. Moralists shouting......."But GP1, if they can't afford kids, they shouldn't be having sex." Riiiiiiiight. How many of us were having sex in college? Many of us could have easily had a kid had some things gone differently. Moralist guy needs to stay away. If moralist guy had any real morality, he would see the inequity and demand the players get paid on some level beyond the scholarship.
First thing that needs to be done is to analyze the definition of professional and amateur. Up until now, the generally accepted definition is that professionals earn their living by being paid to do something and amateurs just do it for fun.Pee wee football, high school football and college football have generally been considered amateur, and the NFL professional. But it's true that many college players get monetary reimbursement through athletic scholarships, and many colleges make money on football. So the lines have already been blurred.The next question is how far to blur the lines? Can we legally get the money down into high schools? How about pee wee football? How about paying parents who have the genes to potentially produce good football players?Where does it all end?Wherever some fast-talking promoter and enough true believers want it to end....... 11. Scholarship players will be paid $1,000 per month ($12,000 per year) for their service in addition to their scholarships.12. Bonuses will be paid to player and coaches for making the playoffs. I actually think this would be a better scenario for the teams that don't make the 40. If those schools were any good over the past 40 years, they would have made the cut. They can now go off into their own league where they don't have to whore themselves out every year, like UofA does. It creates more competition in the lower levels and higher level.In terms of the money, we aren't making any money now. What would the difference be?Most of the top 40 are professional teams anyhow. They are in the business of generating millions for their schools every year. Coaches make millions a year. My scenario creates a situation where the players are paid $1,000 per month up front in lieu of having go go pick up an envelop full of $100 bills in it every month.Please see my original post for scheduling method.
What benefits Akron wouldn't be a super conference. Where would the money come from for the other 80-90 teams that don't make the cut? TV? Advertising? Sponsors? Big game payouts? No-no-no-no. It puts all the money in a much smaller basket and turns the super teams into professional teams with paid students. In the gp1 scenario, there would be no promotion/relegation because no team could afford to do so. How would scheduling be accomplished? Do you inherit their schedule and they inherit yours? It's been brought up several times and it's still not a good idea or an idea that would benefit Akron or any other non super conference team. It rewards schools that already have the most. No more Boise Sts., no TCU's, no Appalachian Sts., I could do without that in college athletics. For every team not part of the chosen few, it would be like being the Pittsburgh Pirates and knowing you're going nowhere.My answer is very simple....The method of reform I want....is whatever benefits Akron the most. -
Good question. Why does it have to be either/or? It is both punishing and leveling. I don't like to punish others for their success. There is a level playing field everywhere except money. All schools have the same number of scholarship players, spring practices, games per year, most are on TV at some point.

It is the money of the University and the NCAA does not run our universities.3. If a team can schedule 8 home games, why should they be punished? Why punish the successful schools by taking away their money and giving it to teams and conferences that can't find their ass with both hands. Salary cap the coaching staffs or penalize (luxury tax) that university if they choose to ignore.2. Stop the insane boosters, plain and simple, limit the total amounts a school can receive, and beyond that the NCAA should take it.3. Make teams play the same number of games, and quit letting all the powers play 8 home games while a MAC school gets 5. Once again, penalize this if they choose to ignore. 5. Don't let a FBS play a FCS, ever.6. Have the NCAA hire and manage all the officials, can you think of the NFL with an AFC North Officiating crew that is paid by them? 7. Have all your big TV money split up, the NCAA should control those contracts and deals, things like the SEC/Big 10 deals only make the problems with competition worse.
