UA1987
I watched the Ball State/Navy game last week, and, besides getting pressure on their QB with the hoped for debut of Bain, I believe we need to slowdown their top receiver - Love, to be successful. To do this, should Fleming double-up coverage with a safety and a corner? Should we stick to him at the LOS? Put a target on him. Always stay in his face... try to throw him off any way possible. We may need Andre Jones to play more defense this week.

We may need Andre Jones to play more defense this week.I agree, but its easier said than done. The Cards use him in different ways in many formations, even the backfield. It will be quite a challenge to keep him down. On another note, their defense is nothing special at all and I think that we have a good chance to keep up with them. This will probably be the most entertaining game on the home schedule and I'm really looking forward to this one. We may need a calculator, rather than the scoreboard, to tally up all the scoring. johnnyzip84
You have others who agree with this same thought (See Link1)Link1However, I also think their big and relatively fast TE Darius Hill is a player to be concerned about. We had some trouble in the Dome with SU's TE's and this guy (Hill) is currently rated as the 6th best in the country by Rivals (See Link2).Link2

It's a shame that our d-line will not be full strength. I'm hoping I see a "Probable" next to Ryan Bain's name tomorrow.
ZachTheZip
Don't forget to watch out for MiQuale Lewis, their RB.Ball State has the whole package on offense. The only way to win is to hope for an interception or two, and to make sure the offense keeps scoring touchdowns. We might not be able to afford to settle for a FG.Here's a good write-up about the match-up.

The Hip Zip
Agree with Rowdy and the kid here. The Orangemen's greatest strength was their ability to run the ball on us. I'm sure that's a fact that the Cardinal staff is acutely aware of so I expect to see plenty of Lewis. Our best chances will rely on the Zip's offense to sustain a few good time consuming drives to keep the powerful Ball State offense off of the field. Also, a positive turnover ratio is a must !GO ZIPS, this is a big one !!! Captain Kangaroo
I'll re-place this post here. Seems like a more appropriate spot --The one thing that strikes me positively about our 2008 defense is its' "bend but don't break" steadiness. After playing two BCS opponents, the longest TD we've surrendered is 35 yards. The rest were under 15 yards. We get beat up...pushed around...but at least we're making tackles and making the opponent work a bit.I think that bodes well vs a team like Ball State, who thrives on the big play. The couple times Syracuse threw deep, the WR was blanketed by two Zips. If we take away BSU's deep play and make them work, Davis can, and will make mistakes. I have to believe Bryan Williams has Dante Love's picture above his locker. That should be an epic matchup. Can we get pressure on Davis? Maybe. I keep waiting for Christmas when we get our top 2 DL's back on the field. It really sucks not having Lively, Bain and, to a lesser extent, Deni Odefin anchoring our line. Sewell and Grant aren't nearly as disruptive as they could be.I also think our offense's sustained drives are helping our D stay fresh. To-date, we haven't seen the maddening 3-and-outs from last year. I hope it continues.Back in the earliest Lee Owens days we played Marshall w/Chad Pennington. Pennington/Marshall were all the hype that this 2008 BSU team is, and then some. We had a freshman DL named John Lutz that came out of nowhere and had an awesome game. He had 2 sacks, and then he hurt his neck. Unfortunately, he never played again. To beat Ball State we need some defensive "unknown" to step up and wreak some havoc. Maybe it is one of our AWOL DL's...maybe Sewell or Grant goes Virginia Tech-Jason Taylor on Davis' ass. But someone really needs to play at a higher defensive level. It should be an awesome, WAC-type shoot out Saturday afternoon. My grill is packed, the beer's awaiting the cooler and my rifle-like arm is ready to toss some balls around the Rubber Bowl lot!Go Zips!! Captain Kangaroo
I wonder what Delone Carter is thinking of his decision to go "big time," out-of-state rather than attend UA?
Ryno aka Menace
I wonder what Delone Carter is thinking of his decision to go "big time," out-of-state rather than attend UA?Unfortunately most people will still think he made the right decision because of the conference affiliation. I am hoping a new stadium will help us retain a few more local prospects that pick a BCS bottom feeder over a MAC elite.
UA1987
One of things I like to do at the Rubber Bowl is watch the visiting team come out of their locker room (If you could call it that - more like an empty garage) prior to the start of the game. There are usually some Frat guys or drunks yelling obsenities at the visiting team players, which can be entertaining, and I like to see if the opponent looks ready to play or not.I just thought if any of you are looking for ideas of something unique to do at the opener, how about getting dressed up like the witch doctor on that cars.com commercial and then you could yell native gooblygook curses at the Testicle Tech players (incantation to shrink their testicles?) as they leave the locker room. Maybe we could freak Nate Davis out before the game, plus you'd be all set for Halloween parties. Can any of you web art people create a picture of this for the Zipsnation?Go Zips! If Bain plays and, or, we contain their spark plug Dante Love, we win.

Frozenbaugh
I am terrified about the game with you guys on Saturday. I can't say I know a whole lot about Akron since they are in the east, but the numbers they put up against Wisky and the Cuse show that they will move the ball.Should be a shoot out.
