CDIUKRYOONBLAHC.20070827205438.jpgQuestion: What is the current state of the Zips?Defensively, we have our ups and downs and this last game was really a down. We have the capabilities to do good things. We just have to get better and play much better than we did against Eastern Michigan. We are looking for consistency. You see players do the right things and play well one play and do something completely different later in the same situation.Question: Can you win with this defense?Yes we can. If you look at the season we have played well enough to win. You just can not give teams short fields, especially late, and think the defense will be able to stop an opponent when they only have to go 10-30 yards to score. We have to improve during the bye week.Source----------------------------------------We are giving up 405 yards per game, only 26 teams in the nation are worse. That is a LOT of 10-30 yard scores!?!?Only 5 teams in the nation are worse than us at giving up rushing yards. If you want to succeed in defense, STOP the run.I'm glad that whomever is asking the questions, keeps on asking if he can win with this defense week after week.Coaching staff, improve our D during our time off. It will make all other phases of the game seem so much easier.

The bad thing regarding our Bottom 5 ranking in rush defense is our level of competition. We ain't exactly facing Heisman trophy candidates every week...we just make every chump RB look like one.Brookhart is correct in his "short field" comment, however. If Jacq doesn't turn into Roman Gabriel when his back's to the endzone in the 4th quarter, our defensive porosity is masked a bit. We beat BG, we beat Cinci. If you're a "manage the game" QB, you need to be one for 4 full quarters...not 3 1/2. He needs to somehow gain some late-game poise over the next 2 1/2 weeks and quit putting our D in impossible (for them) situations.

Or the defense needs to let him actually keep a double digit lead he has accrued while managing the game. Let's not forget two games, two double digit leads, two instances where we went from leading to trailing. But yeah that's all on one interception in the BG game, and 1 Fumble in the EMU game. Most QB's are allotted 1 or 2 mistakes a game, but Jacq has to be flawless? No the defense has to learn to suck it up in the 4th quarter and make the stops we need.

Yes, I agree with you, however, the coaches need to let others play. Stop benching guys, because you have a personal issue with them. It's about winning. Look at the stats for the Ball State and Army game and you tell me what made the difference. I believe we stopped the running game.

I'll bite...Who is being benched because of coaching vendettas?

Wallace Pendleton (allegidly) for one. Haxime, Rash and Harvey don't seem to see much, if any, action either these days but I don't have any reason to suspect it's for disciplinary reasons.

Are these indeed vendettas or the fans seeing something that is not there? If they are vendettas then JD truly is a HS coach and should be gone. I fail to believe, though, that benching 4 of your biggest D men because of a personal vendetta is what's going on. Maybe I'm naive, but you gotta believe JD would want the best guys on the field whether he likes them personally or not. If these guys aren't playing, I sure hope there is a better reason than personal issues between coach and player.

JD and his entire coaching staff are truly HS coaches. Not only can you tell by the personal issues, but by the gameplan they have.

Former walk on. Marginal talent, at best.
Hazime
True freshman
Rash
Redshirt Freshman
Harvey
True Freshman with a broken handThree freshman and a walk on aren't playing much. Man, that really sounds like grounds for a conspiracy theory to me. Why not throw in Cowles Stewart while you're at it? He's out for the season with an injury...but I hear it is all a cover up. He's healthy as a horse...there's just a vendetta against him. :ninja:

To clarify, I wasn't implying a conspiracy theory at all. I named Pendelton, because it DOES seem like the coaches have a bug up each of their asses towards him. Just look at the sidelines during a game when the defensive front is getting "coached up". The other names were mentioned, because the D-LINE has collectively had about as much gas left in it during the 4th quarter of the last three games as a Dominos driver in a Hummer on a Friday night. WTF happened to the "we're going to play 22 players on defense" strategy?

I believe the coaching staf does hold grudges against certain players, and JD's press conference confirms it. I wanted to hear what JD, and possibly Andy Hildreth, had to say about the blocked FG, but not one word was mentioned about it. Hildreth has never been given an opportunity to punt in a game, even though we have had to put up with Stec's inconsistency for over 2 years before he finally seems to have gotten it together the last 4 games. And now he is being dissed by JD even though his heads up play may go a long way to saving JD's job. I'm sorry, this is no way to treat a senior.

Post game Quote:"It was amazing," J.D. Brookhart told Joe Dunn on the postgame radio show. "Andy is a great kid. I'm always pulling for him."JD is SOOOOOOOOO dissing Hildreth. If I read it correctly a few days ago, Hildreth has a scholarship? The back up punter/holder is on scholarship and someone's grousing that the coach has it out for him? There are plenty of upper-major D1 schools that have walk on starting place kickers. We give our back up punter a scholarship and his "fans" (I never knew back up MAC punters had fans) freak out? He's the "Nick Goddard" of the football team.JD has a lot better things to do than brood over how he can mess with his back up punter...3rd string nose guard...18 year old true freshman DL...flag line girl...or whatever other inane scenario someone wants to dream up.

Well...I will join the throng of fans who do not believe that JD would bench players for personal vendettas, at his own demise. Coaching positions don't normally last long in college football, and I am sure he wants to keep his. If I could think of a reason why he'd squander that opportunity, by not giving us the players who he thinks give us our best chance of winning each game, I'd present it to you. Listen guys.....We don't have a good tackling defense this year. But, we're still finding ways to win games, and that has put us into a position to win our division in what was supposed to be a down year for us. Enjoy the ride.
