zippyrifle32
Vs Gonzaga. Is it winnable? To answer the question, yes it is winnable. On any given day, the Zips can beat any team in the tournament.I'm not so concerned about the Zips traveling west. I'm concerned that Gonzaga can take a bus from their campus to Portland. Spokane is more than 350 miles from Portland. Spokane is located in the Eastern Mountains of the State of Washington and most of the trip from Spokane to Portland will not be on a major highway. They may have a far shorter distance. But, the trip is not a piece of cake.ummm... yeah it is a piece of cake trip. made that drive several times while heading to northern idaho and montana. Dave in Green
Dave,You got any idea how to get there for less than 800?ZWI'm fortunate to have rung up enough frequent flyer miles to cover the trip, so I don't have to pay the high fares. What I saw in my brief search through available flights is that there are no bargains for Portland, but there are some to Seattle. Hilltopper and I have decided to drive to Detroit (3 hours) and catch a direct flight to Seattle. It's less than a 3-hour drive from Seattle to Portland. The best prices I saw were Columbus to Seattle. It includes a couple of connections, but prices out around $400.got room for one more? Not in my frequent flyer miles account. It's now officially busted. In cash, the Detroit-Seattle-Detroit fare is over $1,100, so it's no bargain. Best bargain for cash customers is out of Columbus, not Detroit. I don't think so.I'm 6'3 and I've done 6 hour trips on chartered buses and they're not fun.I seriously doubt you have player on the Gonzaga team that will tell you this trip is a piece of cake. UAZips
I'd fly down for the game if the Iditarod wasn't ending this week here in town Oh well.
Hilltopper
When we called the ticket office tonite to order tickets, they said we were the first local fans to order. They had some orders from fans on the west coast, but not many from Akron.
zagirl2k
Hi Zips! Looking forward to the matchup on Thursday. I hope you'll find most of our fans to be knowledgeable and respectful. We've got a few loose cannons, but we're a good group for the most part. We had a great conference tournament last week so we are a confident bunch right now too. Feel free to stop by our board for a chat.A couple random things, the Zags will most certainly be flying to Portland (we actually have a charter plane these days, my how things have changed with 10 years of success) and will have lots of fans there. Portland State did actually bus to their game in Spokane this year because winter storms had closed the airports in the area so it isn't a difficult trek.A lot of GU alums/fans are in the Portland/Seattle area. University of Washington is also playing there, so between the 2 teams, the place will be full of locals who are passionate about their teams and don't particularly like each other. Tickets will be available there, but pricey. My husband just saw on our board that the game is 4:25 pm Pacific time so I will let you figure out your own local times.I did get a good laugh over the comment about the altitude in Portland since there really isn't any. Just bring your umbrellas. . .I always prefer to get matched up with a major conference team instead of having all of us smaller conference teams knock each other out, but we'll take what we can get.See you on Thursday! Lynette
Hi all,I'm from the Zags board. We're a pretty friendly lot over there, so do come over and post. I am sure the link has been posted somewhere else, but here it is again: http://www.guboards.spokesmanreview.com/I think I can say we are pretty excited to be playing you guys in the first round, and we wish you the best of luck. We don't normally overlook anyone, so do know that we will be prepared for a battle. The team seems to be peaking at just the right time (for once, and injury-free!), so expect our best, as we will expect nothing less from you guys. IWe can sympathize with you having to travel across the country for the first round, look what happened to us last year. It sucked. And I read on another thread that someone was disappointed with drawing Gonzaga, only because you would be interested in taking a stab at a BCS school instead. I totally agree with that. I wish the committee would stop pitting non-BCS teams against each other in the first round. Travel for us this time is a good thing. Our team will head to Portland on Tues via the team jet. The smallest of our players is 5'11" (frosh and a walk on) but most of our guys are 6'2", 6'5" and up. Our tallest guy is 7'5". Taking a bus for a 6 hour drive would be brutal. Here's a link to our official team site: http://www.gozags.com/sports/m-baskbl/gonz...askbl-body.htmlBtw, our lady Zags also won the WCC tourney and are dancing! Good luck to you and safe travels to Portland!
SWZag
Akron would actually have a shorter travel time than Gonzaga if the Zags decided to take a bus.Gonzaga actually flies in a private jet.Hopefully a lot of you folks can make it out for the game, should be a good one! Always great to see programs have a resurgence in their programs! Good luck.
infofan
Dave,You got any idea how to get there for less than 800?ZWI know you won't like this answer but AMTRAK can get you out and back for $193 (before taxes I think) each way. 45 HOURS to do it each way so you'd probably have to be on the 3:45AM train that leaves in about 8 hours. Haven't checked Greyhound .$576 Roundtrip on United Akron to Portland if you can leave on weds and stay till monday. I wont be able to make it but I know some blue and gold will be in the house!!! By the way- anyone interested in watching together at OBC or anywhere else thursday?

But, due to the recent Gas Crisis they increased it to 400 miles. Gonzaga Private jet or not will be traveling to Portland by bus. Unless the Zags wish to pay that expense themselves. Here's the link to NCAA Travel Guidelineshttp://www.ncaa.org/wps/ncaa?ContentID=36359Unless the Zags wish to pay for the travel cost themselves. They'll be traveling by chartered Buses paid for by NCAA. The NCAA pays for team and Pep Band. They have great policy that helps with travel costs for everybody.

Why don't we hook up Zip fan #1 to put us on Air Zoom Lebron? We got his shrink, why not borrow his pilot too?
TheZagPhish
Much respect, Zips!Looking forward to having you out to the Pacific Northwest. I'm afraid that the sour economy and accompanying lack of company bonus for 2009 have conspired to keep me in Akron THIS time around. I have to believe that OBC will be planning to host those of us who are in the same boat. I'll be done there tomorrow and will inquire. MDZip
I'm in. Just took care of the plane tickets (got a very good deal from Baltimore to Portland and then I have to fly out of Seattle coming back) and called the Akron ticket office for the game tickets. I'll try to coordinate with some of you who are going beforehand to meet up. Go Zips!
