Buffalo to the Big 10

Recommended Posts

Why would take Buffalo. Akron is an better option(see merging conferences). That would make no sense to take Buffalo.
They would take Buffalo because they're part of the old boy's club called the AAU. The Big Ten bylaws require a school to be a member of that organization. Buffalo is the only MAC school that's a member. AAu is basically the research universities'club, but they have an arbitrary selection process. Akron's research is at a level beyond a good portion of the schools that are members, but we won't be getting an invite thanks to biased statistics due to Akrn's state-mandated open-enrollment policy and the huge amount of non-traditional students. UA's community college in the Polsky building accounts for a lot of that. The thing is that Buffalo hasn't shown a commitment to spending money on the program. The only reason they kept their coach was because he got snubbed by Auburn in what has turned out to be a very controversial decision. Not because they're spending the money to keep him. Akron is building new facilities left and right, but I don't know if they're also increasing spending on stuff like academic support for athletes or other areas.I would argue that the 08-09 athletics season for Buffalo was very similar to what we had going at UA in 2005-2006. Football wins the MAC as a heavy underdog, and basketball has the best season in a long time. Of course, they didn't have the success that our non-revenue sports had. I also wonder if they'll be able to keep up their success after this year.

Other than the fact that they are in a large city, I can't see the financial benefit of the Big 10 adding Buffalo.
That's all the benefit they need. The Big Ten Network is a hugely profitable venture. Add in that the International Bowl would switch to the Big Ten instead of the MAC. Buffalo could pull in Toronto, with their huge media market.

Toronto is not going to care about US College football, there is no cross country play in any sport. There are three major school the Big 10 cares about and they are Rutgers, West Virginia, and V Tech. The Big 10 is going to try and cherry pick a team just like the ACC did. They certainly aren't going to go after a MAC school that has one good year.Rutgers wants in for two reasons, 1 they get a larger budget immediately. 2 their basketball program can actually compete.

And if the Big 10 takes a team from the Big East, in turn, the Big East will be looking to add a new member school making all the points regarding UB relevant, but to another conference.Five years ago I could have seen Toledo being that school going to the Big East. Now I see it being UA or UB with the strong advantage to UB because of research and media market.

I have news for some of you. Buffalo is not a big media market. That is why the Bills can't wait to flee upstate New York like the remainder of the population. Buffalo is a small city that is getting smaller by the plant closings and better opportunities elsewhere.

Sounds a lot like Akron (and any other rust-belt city for that matter).

How does adding an already bad team to a bad conference make the conference better?
The MAC does it all the time. It must be smart.
Building since 1946........The only advantage CUSA and other similar conferences have is they have not been around as long as the MAC so their record of stupidity is not as long. Maybe we can merge with one of those other conferences and bring our average years of stupidity down. I'm sure there are people around the country dying for a MAC/CUSA merger. They could name the conference..."The Worlds Biggest Train Wreck (TWBTW)"Even gamblers don't care about the merger. They will gamble on anything so any Tuesday night game in front of an empty stadium is fine for them.Someone has yet to tell me how two bad conferences merging into one really large crappy conference makes a good conference...... Please help me out someone. Spare us the media coverage....nobody is paying attention. Spare us better competition.....the competition will remain equally as bad.
