The Zips will participate in the Glenn Wilkes Classic to be held in Daytona Beach, FLNovember 19 through the 22nd.While the first game is actually a home game verses Austin Peay, the first game in Daytona Beach will be against the North Carolina State Wolfpack. Two more games pit the Zips against Howard and Drake.I suppose most of us would rather have a tournament style as opposed to pre-determinedopponents. Count me as one.Recent check of airfare shows seats available R/T for less than $260.

Have to like this tournament better than last years Legends Classic. The Legends Classic basically had Pitt as a draw and not much else. This deal has a pretty decent NC State team, a good high mid-major in Drake, an SEC team (albeit not a very good one) in Auburn, and some nice mid-majors in Niagra, UCF, Austin Peay and IUPUI. A far cry from the Urbanas, EKUs and Fairleigh Dickinsons of the Legends Classic. Now we need to combine this with a well rounded OOC schedule and maybe give ourselves a shot at some at large consideration next season.

Do you have a link or is this insider info? I don't see anywhere online where the field has been announced.I recall last year claims that the Zips would be playing in a Mississippi State tournament (or something like that) and we end up in the Legends Classic, so I'll hold off on making my reservations until it's official.

Let's call it "insider" information since it came from the Zips scheduling coach (Rick McFadden).

Also - Drake will be a great measuring stick of the Zips progress towards becoming a "high-mid-major."
Not exactly. Drake is far from being a "high mid-major".
"Far from becoming a high-mid major?" Your argument is convincing...tough to find fault in any facet of your analysis. But I'll try.If you consider UA a solid mid-major, then what do you call Drake?2008 NCAA tourney - Lost on a miracle 3-pointer at the buzzer to Western K.e.n.t.ucky (who advanced to the sweet 16 that year).2008 - Won the MVC (a basketball conference light years ahead of the MAC)2008 - Beat a Top 10 team.2008 - Ranked as high as 13th in the national polls.I'd wear a Golden F.l.a.s.h. mascot uniform for a month to accomplish 1/2 of what Drake in '08.They were 17-15 last season, but played a very difficult schedule. Although they lost some key players, and their coach to the Big East, they still received a post-season bid. If you don't see playing an upper-echelon MVC program as a great measuring stick of the Zips progress towards becoming a high-mid major...you need to do some homework.

One year doesn't make them a "high mid major" or even an upper-echelon MVC program. I think you are the one who needs to do some homework.Drake Basketball History Lesson1971 was last time Drake made the NCAA tournament before '07-'08.'87-'88 thru '05-'06 seasons: Drake did not have one single winning season. Not a single one. 18 straight years.'06-'07: (17-15) 7th out of 10 in MVC'07-'08: (28-5) 1st in MVC; Great Season, Davis leaves after one season for Providence'08-'09: (17-16) 8th out of 10 in MVC; Without Davis Drake starts on their way back to their normal selfSo yes, Drake is far from being a "high mid-major".

One year off a Top 15 ranking, I'm not ready to throw dirt on Drake. They have the runner-up Michigan Mr. Basketball on the way, and it will be the second year running the new coach's system. 17 wins in the MVC is like 22 wins in the MAC. Drake should be a solid team in '09-10.

That's fine. I'm not saying its going to be an easy game, but Drake isn't the team the were two years ago. They only have one guy left that played in their tournament game and are losing 2 out of their 3 top scorers from last year. Drake will be projected to finish in the bottom half of the MVC, so a loss to them would be disappointing.

I'd rather have a great mid-major program than one great mid-major season.
You can't have two great mid-major seasons until you've had one. Drake 1. Zips 0.I like upping the level of competition. If the Zips want to step up we need to to play the MVC, Colonial and upper-tier Horizon League schools rather than the OVC's of the world.

Without looking it up to be certain, I'd bet that the Zips have more post season appearances, more post season victories and exactly the same number of NCAA tournament wins than Drake has over the last 5 years.Go Zips!

Drake's beaten more Top 20 teams, and actually been ranked in the Top 20 itself within the last 2 years. They aren't exactly MAC West material.I wonder if Drake fans care as much about Drake basketball as Zips fans seem to care?At least when we do end up playing them this November ZipsNation will be up-to-speed regarding their program's recent history.

The Zips have 0-2 career records against both Drake and NC State, so we still have something to prove before getting too cocky. The important thing is to continuously increase strength of schedule and reduce the number of cupcakes. Neither Drake nor NC State have been consistently dominant in their respective conferences. But the ACC is obviously superior to the MAC, and the MVC is at least somewhat stronger overall. So even fair teams from these conferences will provide better than average challenges as the Zips continue to grow a more competitive non-conference schedule.

If KD wants to fill those empty seats at the JAR (like he states over the radio after the games), getting ranked in the season should do it.I hope that the NCAA tourney cup of coffee carries over and shows up in JAR attendance, but we'll see... My fear (for attendance) is that we "peaked" at the end of the season (for attendance purposes)....I'm not sure my point is coming across as I read this back.

Anybody have any idea how you actually "win" the tournament if all games are preprogrammed? Is the third game Saturday or the 22nd?

I rechecked the schedule and they have made a change. The tournament still opens on Thursday but we play NC State on Friday, Drake on Saturday and Howard on Sunday. I have no idea who is playing on Thursday in the new setup.
