Here's something I was hoping they would do, but I haven't seen it: "University of Akron: Bringing big-time college football to north-east Ohio"Never mind that we've had a team for 110 seasons now or that there are other colleges with teams in the area, or any of that stuff. The "big-time" college football experience is something that's missing from the Cleveland area. One of the keys to marketing a product is to make it sound like 1.) it's something your target audience doesn't already have, and 2.) it's something that they need to have.

(1) E-mails to your alumni, both to get them to attend and to donate and/or sell some of the other promotional stuff.(2) T-shirts that say something such as "InfoCision Stadium -- Inaugural Season" and list your home games/dates. (Sorry if I misspelled the Stadium name.)Here's one vendor, pulled at random from Google: http://www.customink.com/categories/short-...hirts/16/styles(3) Hats or visors or something similar with "Akron Zips" and your kangaroo logo. (Solicit donations from alumni/local businesses to defray costs.)(4) Shoot, go back to high school and get the cheerleaders to throw (small) footballs into the stands. Watch in case you spot one of them with a good arm. (Not knocking CJ -- just suggesting there may be two benefits for one promotion.)(5) Noisemakers such as http://www.motivators.com/Promotional-Cust...acas-22577.htmlIMHO, you want "take-aways" so that when you are wearing your spiffy T-shirt or hat in other venues, people approach you and ask, "Where did you get the spiffy T-shirt/hat, and how do I get my hands on one?"Someone let me know if you come up with ideas that need $$, and I'll donate $50 to the cause. E-mail me at nomad733@msn.com.

All these things were being done in the Rubber Bowl/Mike Thomas days (2005). All good ideas. We also need to improve our "product" and the rest should fall into place. But we will have a limited time to improve on said product with the new stadium until people lose interest. We need more fans like PSU_Lions_84, he seems motivated.

Why not have a small-scale test run the week before with season ticket holders and students only?
What they should do in the near future is do a test run on the stadium. Meaning, have enough people in the stadium to flush all the toilets and run all of the water at the same time to make certain those systems work properly at high volume. Leaking pipes or no water would spell disaster for the first game. In fact, if there is no running water, a building can not open to the public. Have a practice game during two-a-day practices where they can run the clock and make certain all of that works. A meeting the week before the first game with the ushers would be enough. One thing I really would like to see is professional vendors at the new stadium. Volunteers for local little leagues are always too slow and the crowds will be too big for that. Hire a professional company to staff the food counters.Test the lights at night to make certain they shine where they are supposed to shine. At Jacobs Field, each light is computerized and is assigned a certain spot on the field. They test this each year with sensors prior to each season as they change each bulb before the season starts so they have white light in lieu of pink light from old bulbs. And for crying out loud, can we please make certain the refs field mic works properly and has enough volume.
Yes, I'm certain they haven't thought to do any of those things.

We need more fans like PSU_Lions_84, he seems motivated.Honored, Doc, thanks very much! Spent seven years on Army Special Forces A-teams: Motivation was NOT optional. Hoo-ahhh!P.S. Don't dis each other's ideas, guys -- you never know when one speck of badly needed pepper will fly out from a pile of bird crap. I spend my days trying to separate the pepper from the fly spit; it's always nice to find that one grain of finely ground seasoning.

It was student appreciation day all over campus today and they gave us free tee shirts after we participated in a couple of games and stuff. They also gave us posters and calendars of the new stadium and stuff. The shirts are awesome and say " New Stadium, New Rules" and things to that effect. A TON of students were out participating so that's awesome. On the front of the shirt it says "ROO ZOO" and "ROOS REFUSE TO LOSE" I would imagine the students are going to wear these shirts and our student section will be "THE ZOO" It's awesome but it would be cool to do something like that in the city for the surrounding community.

These were the tshirts we were handing out for Student Appreciation Day. We ran out of tshirts within the first hour. Our tent had a line from the fountain to the Buchtel statue. Since I was working it, I got a yellow version. I hope everyone who isn't an AK-ROWDIE is wearing this shirt. 64c53e44.jpg478b458a.jpg

GREAT shirt!!! I love the Zoo idea. When I was @ Green high school - '91 grad - we sometimes referred to UA as The Zoo because it was such a crazy place! Also, it was a little play on words as zoo sounds like U, so we'd sometimes call it Akron Zoo instead of Akron U.Yeah, we called it Akron U. Lol

Just a reminder......when any media outlet is giving us props, take a second to drop them an email saying thanks. We want to destroy the ridiculous stereotype that nobody cares about Akron.
And we'll start another one that we're all desperate for attention and come groveling with thanks at the sign of any coverage. ;) It's great to compliment them on the quality of the coverage, but to thank them for doing something they should be doing in the first place doesn't look good. This especially applies to the Cleveland TV stations.

Agreed, we want reward quality coverage!! But I think we absolutely need the Cleveland stations if we want to establish Akron as THE university for Northeast Ohio. Those television and radio outlets need to hear from us whatever our opinion is. Apathy is the enemy.
