I'm a little surprised that I don't see much mention of this...I really think that was a solid performance by our guys on defense. That OU team has the ability to rack up a lot of yards and points. And despite the situations they faced, we performed pretty well. It reminds me of the Cincinnati game last year. When these guys play with some heart, they can make plays.More thoughts:Give Wagner the defensive MVP for the season....right now.Any word on Sewell's injury?Give our secondary some credit for making a lot of good plays back there. When your starting QB is your top rusher, that's usually not a good thing. But Matt took advantage of what we were given, and that TD at the end of the first half could have been big. I think if he had taken off a second earlier, he would have been in the end zone, and the whole game could have changed.I'm far too ticked off to even talk about the special teams blunders this morning, but that blocked punt for TD was, without a doubt, the biggest play of the game. If ever a game was decided on one play, that was it. I like Nicely's mechanics, but it's hard for me to put a raving endorsement on a guy who completed 9 of 23 passes, and an offense who scored once in the 2nd half on a very short drive after a turnover. A lot of over/under throws even on some simple routes. But, I will look forward to seeing if he can show some promise over the next few games. We really have no options now...it appears Matt is done with that injury. No, Tuzze is not our "best" running back. But with his determination, he's certainly been our most productive. At the start of the season, I saw this road NIU/Syracuse/Buffalo stretch as the most challenging part of the season. But with 4 losses already, it really seems darn near impossible to salvage any decent season now. At least :screwks: I have at least that to make me feel good this morning.

The defense was the best I have have seen last night, even when they were put in bad situations. Our special teams are just a joke, and the two missed field goals and the punt block lost the game. If we make either of those early field goals, we dont have to go 4th and 13 in the 4th quarter, instead we could have kicked and made it 19-13. I saw them line up for the punt in that gimmick formation, and knew it was going to end up bad. Why cant our coaches see that? Overall, a decent night on offense and a great night on defense were wasted.

Two good points right there and I feel the same. Regarding the first one, I chalk a lot of that being due to nerves. The kid is probably 18 years old. Throw a guy into that game and force him to make plays and you can expect that for a result.I think on our last drive that we ended up losing the ball of 4th down, Nicely was trying a bit too hard to make a big play every time. But he is young and he will definitely learn to better himself in that regard. I saw a lot of promise.Tuzze has a great deal of heart but I still will not get off the DeVoe bus. It behooves me that he doesn't get any PT. Normally I'd say these coaches know what they're doing in not playing him but I'm not so sure anymore.Gotta give it up to the defense though. Honestly two weeks ago was about the only time I was disappointed in them, and then I believe it was only due to the fact that they were out there a majority of the game.

The guy who completed 9 of 23 had five passes dropped and two wrong routes run, that would make it 16 for 23 with maybe a different outcome. Go Zips!!

doh! What word am I looking for? bemuse or bewildered?

I couldn't agree more with a few of you. WHY IS DEVOE TORRENCE NOT PLAYING MORE?!?!?!?
It can't be his in-ability to run the ball, can it? I think it may be due to his inability to pick up blitzes and/or something personal by JD. Just cannot figure out why Torrance is not playing more. Tuzze is a FULLBACK! Not a feature Halfback. Anyone have inside info?

The defense has been the best part of this team all season. They play hard every game. They are on the field the most time of every game. They hold up well under pressure and have held a few teams to limited yards and scoring. (ex-OU put up 44 points against BG!). They play with their hearts. I am impressed with this group of players.

I am behooved by Z.I.P's comment.

Quote from an OU grad friend of mine that went to the game..."Wow, those are two lousy teams to watch play football. Very nice stadium."Sometimes your defensive success is a direct reflection of the offensive effort that it is up against. Wagner rulz! I think we have the ability to be a better defense if...sorry, I just can't type it anymore.

Hmm, well apparently BGSU must be even worse. I mean what they have up 30+ points to them, what defense do they run?

For me, "most productive" is synoymous with "best." There may be players with more potential. But if they aren't producing, I can't rate them higher than someone who is.Tuzze finds the holes and usually gains more even after he's hit. Other Zips RBs too often run directly into the arms of a defender and are stopped dead in their tracks.Tuzze is clearly the Zips "Mr. Inside." If only the Zips had an effective "Mr. Outside," they would both benefit by keeping the opponents guessing about where the next run is going. That, in turn, would take more pressure off the QB and open up the passing game.I would be absolutely delighted if one of the RBs who might have more potential than Tuzze would turn that potential into productivity.

Actually...Ohio rang up 44 points on BGs defense. And they run a 4-3.

Still proves my point. Everyone says "how awful" Ohio is, we held their offense to 12 points. With our "crappy" 3-3-5. Yet a 4-3 gives up 44 (thanks for the correction :D ).Schemes don't matter talent does. Our crappy 3-3-5 went 6 quarters without giving up a score, 7 without giving up a touchdown. Then we suffer through 8 quarters of completely inept quarterbacking (starting from the second half of the IU game) giving up the ball at least 8 times and wonder why we get humped.

I don't know if you read my post wrong or not, but I know the point you were trying to make, and was agreeing with you, and supporting your point by pointing out how badly OU's offense destroyed BGs 4-3 defense.

I did, And I know what you were saying, I just wanted to add even more emphasis to it. Maybe if people read it enough, they will finally get it. Learning through repetition.:cheers:

sewell is a great player.he was busting up the ou offense.to bad he got hurt.i think whoever the coach is next yearshould have a decent defense.im not saying they are great, but i have seen some really bad defensive teams with L.O. this defense is alott better than any owens had.you also have to figure in that our offense is terrible, and the D guys just wear out.if sewell comes back from injury our d-line should be pretty good next year.

"If Sewell comes back from injury our D-line should be pretty good next year."Wait, am I missing something? How badly was Sewell hurt? Also, I don't get as bent out of shape as some about us running the 3-3-5. I really like a 4-3, with 4 big-uglies on the line. But I have no problem with the 3-4 either. And, frankly, I can't really see much difference between our 3-3-5 and a 3-4. We usually seem to have 7 bodies in the box. I'm no defensive coordinator, but what we run generally looks a lot like 3 DL with 4 LBs. And with our talent & depth @ LB I'm fine with that.

sorry my bad.i meant to say that our defense should be decent next year with sewell on the d-line.most macschools don't have good defensive lineman.akron should be in god shape on the d-line this year, and next.

Akron's "front 7" all return next year. Add Henderson, Tonga and Hoobler= wow! I think it has the makings of an incredible D.Really, if JD fails and we bring in the right coach, they will come into a situation with lots of talent at DL and LB, 3 returning OL and a player like Nicely. A pretty darn good situation for a young coach to capitalize on or for a seasoned coach to resurrect their career.I would love to see a coach that stresses great D, great special teams and a balanced attack on O.

Getting back to the Sewell injury, it seemed as though he was taking himself out on a couple of occasions that night. I saw his legs being "stretched" several times by trainors. I'm hoping that he just came out late in the game after the injury became too much of a nuisance at that point, and that he doesn't have anything serious. Does anyone have any information on his status for Buffalo?I said it before, but he played "lights out" while he was out there on Saturday. How many times did he simply throw off his offensive linemen and make the play all by himself?

I can't really see much difference between our 3-3-5 and a 3-4.
It has to do with assignment. Watch the "extra" guy that they bring into the "box" and tell me how many times you see him make a play anywhere near the line of scrimmage. Then watch a 3-4 defense and watch the same thing. It is very easy to game plan against it. That's why nobody plays it.

:lol:  If any of the three of them see the field at UA, I'd consider it a bonus. It's just as likely that I'll be named our head coach as it is that Henderson will ever play here.

Why wouldn't Hoobler see the field?
