Zippy989 Posted August 12, 2005 Report Posted August 12, 2005 http://www.cleveland.com/sports/plaindeale...7761.xml&coll=2 "I think Charlie's a confident kid, and I think that's going to be a plus for him down the road. I think he'll tell you that he's got a long ways to go. He played at Akron. He's going from Akron to the NFL. That's a big step. But he comes in with a confident head on him. He's not afraid to take a risk. That's going to be in his favor." "Like I said, coming from Akron to the NFL is a huge jump," Johnson said. "It's not SEC football. And it's definitely not the NFL." Well see what Mr Little Johnson has to say when Charlie takes his backup QB job!!! Quote
zipper Posted August 12, 2005 Report Posted August 12, 2005 Perhaps he has not heard of Ben Roethlisberger. That's just an ignorant comment and speaks more about his lack of knowledge than anything else. Quote
Z-P Posted August 12, 2005 Report Posted August 12, 2005 I didn't see the comments as a slam on either Charlie or the MAC..........you know the Middle American Conference He's correct...........playing at UA or any team at our level is a big jump to the NFL. I actually thought he was kind of complimentary toward S/man after reading the whole story. But then DJ knows the Middle American Conference cause he played a game one time at home vs CMU ILFS (and now Sundays) ITF Hey...........who else is going Saturday night? Beware...........Injuns are at home that nite too.............. Quote
Buckzip Posted August 12, 2005 Report Posted August 12, 2005 So, do you feel UA is comparable to the NFL? Quote
mrelegazna Posted August 12, 2005 Report Posted August 12, 2005 So, do you feel UA is comparable to the NFL? No...the talent level at Akron is way, way better than any team's in the NFL. If Akron would be allowed in the NFL, they'd go 16-0 and win the Super Bowl. Quote
zip37 Posted August 12, 2005 Report Posted August 12, 2005 IT IS A BIG JUMP, BUT ITS BEEN DONE BEFORE--BEN ROTHLISBERGER, REMEMBER KENNY ANDERSON FROM A DIV III SCHOOL THAT LED CINCY (UNDER P. BROWN) TO NFL CHAMPIONHIP? I REMEMBER IT WELL. WITH BALL AMMUNITION LOCK AND LOAD. Quote
Kangaroo Craig Posted August 12, 2005 Report Posted August 12, 2005 Here's some more names for Doug Johnson to consider: Chad Pennington (Marshall), Daunte Culpepper (Central Florida), Byron Leftwich (Marshall). He'll become much more respectful of Charlie Frye when he loses his job to him. That's going to happen after Saturday's game against the Giants when Charlie lights it up in the second or third quarter. Quote
Zippy989 Posted August 12, 2005 Author Report Posted August 12, 2005 CK got it right.. The way I read it, Johnson is saying that any player coming from Akron has inferior talent because it's not the SEC like Florida. BS. Talent is talent no matter where they play. Here's a couple of more NFL Zips to add to the list: Jason Taylor, Victor Green, Dwight Smith, Jake Shafino.... Go get him Charlie.... Quote
RACER Posted August 12, 2005 Report Posted August 12, 2005 i agree with c/k its a slap in the face comment!! why not just say d-1 football is a big jump to the nfl, but he had to pick out akron. it would be funny if charlie beats him out for the back up job. since after all dj played at flordia, and charlie played at poor little akron. Quote

zipboy Posted August 13, 2005 Report Posted August 13, 2005 F Doug Johnson. While he meant to be complimentary he is saying that a guy from Akron will have a much tougher time than a guy from Florida because Florida is big time and Akron is not. His perception is ignorance just like much of the country. Quote

Captain Kangaroo Posted August 17, 2005 Report Posted August 17, 2005 "Like I said, coming from Akron to the NFL is a huge jump," Johnson said. "It's not SEC football. And it's definitely not the NFL." Just for kicks I took a look at the Browns roster. Despite the vast superiority of SEC football over the MAC, the MAC has 9 players on the Browns roster? There are 8 SEC players? Ok...if you coun't Kellen Winslow, there would be 9. Memo to Doug: It ain't the conference, it is the players. The MAC puts out some pretty decent players now-a-days. Good for you that you beat up on Central Michigan. Give just about an MAC school a home game with Vanderbilt and see what the final score is. Yeah, the SEC is overall an athletically superior football conference than the MAC...but that has no bearing on whether or not a MAC player can be successful in the pros. Quote
Buckzip Posted August 17, 2005 Report Posted August 17, 2005 Johnson is an idiot. if he would have just stated coming from college was a big jump, that would have been fine. But when he said UA, and the MAC that sucks. I wonder if Frye is giving him grief over that. Quote
Zipsrifle Posted August 17, 2005 Report Posted August 17, 2005 I'd like to think Charlie keeps those comments in his head and just threw Doug a glance and a smile after his preseason TD. I think we all see it as a jab against the MAC....Do you really think those guys get worked up if someone takes a jab at their old college? Quote
UA Fan Posted August 17, 2005 Report Posted August 17, 2005 http://www.springfieldnewssun.com/sports/c...rownsNotes.html "Frye, a third-round draft choice, is making a big impression. It would not be a huge surprise if he were to nail down the No. 2 spot that is thought to belong to Doug Johnson." (The article also suggests Frye is "obsessed" with Big Ben R.) Quote
Zipsrifle Posted August 27, 2005 Report Posted August 27, 2005 Living near Detroit, I don't have much opportunity to follow the Browns live. This morning, while reading about the preseason game last night, I was again pleased to see that #5/9 had a decent game. The fans in Cleveland seem to be in love with him and Johnson only has his experience in the NFL to keep him in the #2 spot. Then I saw something that put me through the roof. Bud Shaw is an A$$! At the end of his article he has to take a cheap shot at Akron by saying "Frye excelled in the lost cause at Akron." This was totally uncalled for. Maybe if he opened his eyes he would see that UA has put millions in to the upgrading their athletic facilities. A new football stadium is being actively persued. UA fired press darling in LO and put in a guy who wins MAC COY in his first season. If this dumb A$$ actually paid attention to UA he would see that we nearly took down Wisconsin two years ago knocked off Marshall and fought Miami for the division title last year. It's people like him who keep cramming OSU onto every sports report possible. This pisses me off. Bud Shaw is an A$$ Quote
GP1 Posted August 28, 2005 Report Posted August 28, 2005 Good point Rifle. This is typical of the press Akron gets around ne Ohio. They love to write about the Zips when things are going poorly because they can focus on some loser on the team and do a human interest story about some "local" kid playing at Akron. That's all crap. The worse thing that will happen to the media in ne Ohio is if the Zips are winning on a consistent basis. If that happens, the media will have to do actual reporting on the program and interviews with the other teams' coaches. My guess is that Shaw has not walked on campus at UA for over ten years and has no idea about MAC football. I would be curious as to where he went to college. That @$$hole Plute wrote almost the same article Shaw did Saturday. Interesting how things work...... There is one person who could really change the way the media covers Akron in the future. This person would have the ability to take a guy like Shaw aside and say, "Look Mr. Shaw, Akron is not a lost cause. You should go to some of the games and see how good MAC football is and what Akron is willing to do to turn things around". His name is Charlie Frye. Frye now has a good chance to be a champion of the school, conference and football program. From what I have seen, he has taken a good step forward doing the UA ad that has been running during Browns games. I hope he continues. I also hope he would take the time to get some of his former teammates involved in things like the Varsity A. We all know he is very busy, but a person like him could really help grow support from former players of all ages. The school desparately needs the former players, especially the players from the D1 years, to support the program more than they do. If you are a former player reading this, you need to be in the Varsity A. It's only $60 for a three year membership and it helps supporth the school. You have an obligation to do this. Quote
Zips fan Posted August 30, 2005 Report Posted August 30, 2005 I don't know that much about Doug Johnson, but I am guessing he was not an Academic All American. What a dumb statement for a player to make, especially when the Akron is within 50 miles. He has already been passed over in Browns fans mind for backup. I am glad to see Charlie do well and the positive fan support already. Quote
Zipsrifle Posted September 22, 2005 Report Posted September 22, 2005 HA! HA! HA! HA! HA!..........HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA!...... HA! HA! HA! Johnson gets cut! Akron isn't the SEC, and it Definately isn't the NFL! HEY DOUG, How Far is Akron from the NFL NOW?! Quote
