jaycevs
I think a lot of people on here are a little off the mark with the problems this team has. How would you build a football team, how do good teams in the NFL do it? I know I would start with the two lines. If you can run, you can win almost any game with average QB's and average RB's. If you can stop the run with the D line and get pressure with the front three or four, you can stop anyone's passing attack because players are free to roam and make plays. We have skill guys, but we have not run the ball on anyone besides Buffalo. I think if we cant recruit that talent on the two lines, we need to look at what programs like TCU have done year in and year out. They have the best strength and conditioning program in the country, which makes them competitive with anyone they play, even though they dont get that same amount of talent coming in. GP1
A new coach needs to light a fire under some butts and have the players show some enthusiasm. Like Captains previous example, the kids don't seem to care!Spring practice needs to be brutal next year and it should. It's time to find out who wants to play and who doesn't. You find that out in the spring.

Like Captains previous example, the kids don't seem to care!Spring practice needs to be brutal next year and it should. It's time to find out who wants to play and who doesn't. You find that out in the spring.I well remember that in the early Fall JD was proud as a peacock that he had limited contact in practice and thus had maintained a healthy team going into the season. He thought the team was fresher than it had been in years past. He thought they would hold up better once play began. I shuddered. The only teams (in the NFL at least) that I am aware of having been successful with light practices was the 49ers under Bill Walsh. Most of the teams that are successful on a consistent basis hit hard in training camp and practice.I'd like to be a little more detail-oriented regarding the team talent than we've been on here so far. Where is the solid talent and how is it being misused? Who are the "men" on the field for the Zips, beyond the obvious three or four, and how do they stack up against their position competition in the MAC? How does a pretty good O-line go from good to bad so quickly? Where would you put your recruiting efforts this year?
Lee Adams
obviously we are all 'experts' the night before the game...however, unless Akron changes character on offense Can't will sack Nicely 10 times and the game will be a rout in the 1st half...i don't think brookhart/montgomery/harris have the cajones or imagination to do it but...line up in the I with Tuzze as the lead back(he knows how to do that),put Nicely under center and run,run run right at Can't...maybe Alex Allen has 1 game left in him...play field position and tell fleming its time for HIS defense to finally win a game...otherwise Nicely gets swarmed and Can't wins going away...obviously if brookhart hasn't done it already he can't do it(the definition of insanity)...Can't is making a living off of qb sacks and letting their FRESHMAN QB throw the ball 30 times...no jarvis...it isn't going to save anybody's job but the fans will at least remain interested...i fear a long afternoon for the west side fans... ZachTheZip
Tuzze's hurt and likely won't play, Allen went down hard and could be out. Hopefully Torrence is over the flu and can take over the game.
RootforRoo44
I'll have to disagree though uafan... I think a lot of the players care. For the most part I've witnessed the team playing pretty hard, Matt Rogers and D. Bowser come to mind. Many others consistently seem to be going all out on every play. I will say that for years the defense, as a whole, has looked bewildered and confused in giving up big plays. This is not new. I distinctly remember the Buffalo game in particular where the Defense played really tough, coming straight at the Bulls, hard tackling etc. But they still gave up 43 points in the OT loss!!!! Now it's the offense that looks absolutely and inexplicably out of sorts, but this isn't new either. Remember Getsy's senior year? Awful. And this year the offense is worse than awful. Maybe it's the O-line we can blame, I don't know, but my point is I've witnessed many Zips players giving it their all this season. I simply can't explain all the losing we've witnessed in the last few years...Will they?....Time will tell. Should they?, YES.If I hear one single peep out of the new coach or AD pertaining to another "building" process, I'll barf. If they want four years to build, they should let all of us know so we can stop paying attention for four years. I know I've seen enough building over the past 20+ years. I want some winning.EXACTLY! I think the talent is here, at least as much as most other MAC teams, but if you look at my past posts, I've pointed out many examples of poor coaching. A new coach needs to light a fire under some butts and have the players show some enthusiasm. Like Captains previous example, the kids don't seem to care!I dont know what you're watching then. This team gave up a few games ago and 3 out of every 5 players dont show any heart or enthusiasm. We need to get them motivated.
Lee Adams
They have to be thinking they can stuff our run game and beat us up on the lines. They have had 7,4,4, and 5 sacks the last 4 games, and held Western Michigan and BG to about 40 yards rushing, OU to -9, EMU did well running the ball however (not sure how really). On offense, they have run the ball well against everyone in the MAC, and the passing game has gotten better. They are not as weak as some would have us believe, I think they are are a significant challenge and the D has gotten better recently after the debacle against BG. So, I don't think the game plan from last week is going to cut it (as if it did last week). I know they will shut the run until we prove we can throw the ball, and Nicely cant have 3rd and long or that pass rush will be coming. So running twice into the line and passing on 3rd down like last week is asking for trouble, and they are not one dimensional on offense like Northern Illinois. This game is on our line, QB, and WR to win, and to this point we have not been good in any area. If the defense is on the field the whole first half, we may be in the game but it will end badly. Their kickers are 7 of 12, one bright spot (we are 4/13).I will be there early, and be as loud as I can, we just need our defense to keep us in this game, and the offense to make some plays and run some clock. If we can get into the second half with them we have a good chance. They don't put up a lot of points on anyone, which will keep us close hopefully. Last, I would like to see Akron treat Nicely the same way Can't has treated their Freshman. Put the ball in his hands and let him make plays, thats the only chance we have to win some games, the flushes have had no problems letting Keith throw it 30+ times a game... if akron tries to throw the ball nicely will be sacked 10 times and the game will be over by haltime...line up in the I run at 'em, play field position and tell the defense(fleming) to stop making excuses and win ONE game...ain't gonna happen but hope springs eternal... If we run for a yard on first down and second down Nicely will be a target, that's where 10 sacks would come from. K.S.U. does well against the run, throwing a pass or two on first down is the only way to keep them off balance and they wont be rushing Nicely. Also, field position, are you kidding us, with our special teams? I'm just trying to get this right, so we should run twice, get in third and long, miss a short pass, then rugby kick it for twenty five yards and let Can't get the ball inside the 50 every possession? No defense is that good, our defense can get us wins if the offense does something, like score over 20 points in a game.

jaycevs
The offensive coaches got this correct tonight, and mixed things up a lot more than they did in the last 3-4 games. They mixed it up, opened the running game, and let Nicely make decisions. 2 TD's, no turnovers for him, I couldn't ask for more from any QB. I know #11 would have found the opponents jersey at least once. And our D played the way it has over the last month, and with an offense that moved the ball, they were not worn down in the 4th quarter. Now that the bragging rights are there, I would not mind us helping Can't next week in taking down Temple.

I thought Nicely played a hell of a game. But if you're going to quote statistics, at least quote them correctly.
