That there was a downturn in recruiting. When Jeff was here, we were being considered by guys like JD Weatherspoon and Adreian Payne. National prospects going to title contenders. Euton will be a very good player in the MAC, but he's just not on the level that those guys are supposed to be. Maybe he'll turn out to be way better than any of those guys, but on paper it's just not the same.I don't really know anything about Ennis, so I can't compare him. Quote

A team that wasn't even listed back when he was considering Akron. Weird. I for one am very excited to see Mr. Euton in blue and gold. He appears to have the game to compliment Zeke by stretching the floor. Quote
Blue & Gold Posted November 6, 2009 Report Posted November 6, 2009 For clarification, Ennis is presently a high school JUNIOR, right? Quote
Zipmeister Posted November 6, 2009 Report Posted November 6, 2009 a two star and a one star probably doesn't qualify as a recruiting upgrade. Quote
Zip Watcher Posted November 7, 2009 Report Posted November 7, 2009 These guys are on the level with the McKnights .. Humpty .. etc. They're not at the level of Zeke, nor should we expect that to happen every year. Ennis hasn't been properly rated due to his relatively short time in the States .. I wouldn't read much into that.Good fits for our roster needs .. and our defense. B) B) Go Zips!! Quote
Blue & Gold Posted November 7, 2009 Report Posted November 7, 2009 Now let's keep our fingers crossed that St.V/M's Jakaar Sampson decides to stay home & rep in the blue & gold! He'd be our 2nd 4-star recruit. And I'm hoping that at least half the hype coming out of Illinois about Ennis is true. The articles I've read essentially make him out to be Illinois' (let alone Chicago's) #1 PG. Ennis & Sampson would be a GREAT class!Stay home Jakaar! Keep it real! Go get him Willie! Quote
Dave in Green Posted November 7, 2009 Report Posted November 7, 2009 As good as JB was for UA, I personally doubt his departure was the deciding factor in Adreian Payne selecting Michigan State over UA. Without taking anything away from JB, I think KD was and still is the deal closer for UA recruits.UA is now at least on the radar for higher potential recruits. But the Zips are still at a disadvantage with the very top recruits against teams that are regularly in national championship conversations such as Michigan State, North Carolina, Duke, Kansas, etc.Signing Zeke was a huge step forward, and signing a player the following year who was previously committed to Kentucky should not be taken lightly, even if Euton's stock has fallen a bit for the highest level schools. I think he's still another step forward for the Zips on the long road up from also-ran in the MAC to a potential future national power. Quote

Not only is the 6-foot-7 Akron, Ohio native picking up scholarship offers from colleges, but also he is receiving some advice from the best in the world.Hopefully Lebron will help Akron in this. If there is any recruit we have a shot at, it's an SVSM player. Between Lebron, KD, and everyone else, Akron must have a pretty good shot. Sampson could have an impact here early, just like Marshall. If anyone has any inside information on Sampson, please share. Quote
zippyman23 Posted November 7, 2009 Report Posted November 7, 2009 Sampson isn't a legit possibility. Based on everything I have heard, there's next to no chance that he will stay in Akron. Quote

zippyman23 Posted November 7, 2009 Report Posted November 7, 2009 Sampson isn't a legit possibility. Based on everything I have heard, there's next to no chance that he will stay in Akron.Source? From different people on the AAU circuit and some articles written about Sampson. General feeling is that Akron doesn't fit his style of play and he is looking to go bigger. He had said Cincinnati was his leader awhile back and since then all he has done is blown up and become more sought after by the BCS schools. Nothing leads me to believe that Akron will be a factor in his recruitment. Quote
Quickzips Posted November 7, 2009 Report Posted November 7, 2009 Agreed on Sampson. Though it would be nice to see a high flying 6'8" PF from right down the road wearing the blue and gold, none of the articles I've read indicate that he's very high on us. Still, there's some very good prospects on the radar for that 2011 class. In addition to Ennis who we already have Markus Crider is a good looking SF from Huber Heights is a 3 star prospect on Scout with some nice offers (Dayton, Wisconsin and Wright State with others probably to follow). His teamate Travis Trice is another nice PG who has offers from Cleveland State, Butler, Dayton and Wright State. Presumably those two would go together. Anton Grady from Cleveland Central Catholic isn't quite on the level of Sampson, but he has a similar build (though 20 lbs. heavier) and is a 3 star prospect on Rivals with an offer from us and Dayton. There is also Stevie Taylor from Gahana Lincoln who has been discussed on these boards before. We've got 4 scholarships for 2011 and we need to make the best of them. Miami, Ohio and Buffalo in particular have really picked up their recruiting efforts of late. We're going to need to at least match their pace if we want to take the next step.As far as Euton and Ennis. Neither of these guys is on the level of Adreian Payne or JD Weatherspoon. Weatherspoon I don't think ever really seriously considered us. Payne may have when we still had coach Boals. It would have been a major coup to get either of them. Euton is a nice player who, if he were 2 or 3 inches taller would still be going to a Kentucky or another big school. Similar kind of player to what we've gotten in the past. Not saying he's a bad get, and I've said before that I think he's a perfect compliment for a guy like Zeke, but he clearly isn't in the Payne or Weatherspoon league. Ennis I'm not real sure about yet. I suspect we will know a lot more about him come spring/summer time after he's played some stateside and had a chance to get some attention on the AAU circuit. Definitley a kid to keep an eye on if he's that highly rated by ESPN. With McNees and Roberts gone in 2011 a highly rated 6'3" shooting guard would certainly be nice. Quote

Our most recent recruits from there were NSCAA and Parade All-Americas Kofi Sarkodie and Chad Barson. --edit-- Gozips.com shows Barson from Lewis Center in Columbus area, but I thought that he and Kofi were both Huberians, and they played together for several years prior to Akron. So...Keith should be consulting with Caleb -- if he can get on Caleb's schedule -- regarding the twin recruiting targets from Dayton's NE side. Let's set our roots in Huber Heights. Quote

Dave in Green Posted November 11, 2009 Report Posted November 11, 2009 Some interesting back and forth about Euton on the Blue Grass Rivals board -- the usual mix of positives and trashings. zip37 Posted November 11, 2009 Author Report Posted November 11, 2009 Interesting link, surprising the lack of geographic education, I grew up a 3 hr drive southeast of Akron, and I always knew where we are located. When I moved here in 1959, I had never heard of Akron U [as it was refered to in those days] but had heard of Can't St. [Got 2 degrees from THE University of Akron].
