Z.I.P.
I hope that those who are fast to jump to a conclusion will at least wait till after the press conference and introduction and give the guy a listen before you start piling on to his lack of executive leadership experience. I also had the interest in seeing that change from the previous HC. But I am VERY excited on hearing this name. I have heard that he had a bigger part in recruiting most of the Notre Dame Big Name prospects (take, e.g. Hawaii's Manti-Te'o, national #1 LB in 08) than Charlie Weis himself. I'm ready to open my arms to the guy, if he shows promise of bringing in serious prospects who are good people and students as well.
jaycevs
The same players would be rated two star if they went to Akron? Are the players not already rated during their high school careers, or are our players really no different than the Irish. Would Jimmy Clausen be 2 star here? His career, in what some may see as lacking, has been successful in every stop. He also worked with one of the best offensive minds in all of football, offense was never a problem in South Bend the last few years, only in Clausen's freshman year. Him or Warriner or anyone else, I don't think offense will be a problem, but I want to see what we do defensively and special teams. Also, he does know our athletic director, so I'm sure Tom has a good idea of what Ianello brings besides the resume.
ZachTheZip
I have no interest in his speech. I don't care how good he is at marketing himself. Unless he gets Akron to a bowl game next year I will not like this hire.If he wins games consistently, I'll become his biggest fan. But I have seen nothing to suggest that he is capable of doing so. Dave in Green
UA could let Ianello go to San Jose State, see how he does as a head coach in a conference dominated by Boise State, and then try to get him if he's successful.Oops, if he's successful against Boise State, then the bigger schools would want him and UA would be out of the running. One chance to roll the dice on a reasonably young, up and coming assistant who has an outstanding record of recruiting and coaching offense and is well thought of by many in the business of college football coaching. There are no sure winners coming to UA. Anyone applying for the UA job will be a roll of the dice. They're all getting trashed by a bunch of fans on some sports forum somewhere.Decide quick or you lose this one as he will be in demand. doublezip
Clearly this is the most important decision TW will make here. So I'm sure he did his due diligence. He must believe this is the best man for the job. If Ianello is the guy we need to support the choice, but man that resume is eerily familiar... zip37
Whomever gets the job, he has to be given 5 years-- get rid of previous coach's players and have all his own, but if we don't see SOME continous improvement in the first 3 years, it will be time to go. Do you really want to wait another five years and go through this cycle again? Why can't we ever hire a coach that can win both with the players we have now and with his own in the future? There is enough talent on this team to win immediately. There is no sense in waiting around for a new generation of players to start to contribute. Class of 82
The new AD is a professional whose job and reputation are most definitely on the line with this hire. So it seems reasonable to support whatever decision the guy feels most comfortable with. Only fair, if you ask me.In the For What It's Worth Department, Urban Myer had never been a head coach when he got hired at BG.

Akron1
Rasor on the Zips...FootballCoachScoop.com is reporting that Akron's next head coach will be Rob Ianello, the top offensive assistant coach at Notre Dame under Charlie Weis. The ABJ's Tom Gaffney has confirmed that the university will hold a press conference tomorrow (Thursday) at noon to announce the new hire, and Ianello is the leading candidate and interviewed on Tuesday. Ed Warinner, the offensive coordinator at Kansas, is another candidate. He interviewed on Monday.

ZachTheZip
Elton Alexander doesn't seem too impressed.Yet after going 9-3 and 10-3 with the last of Tyrone Willingham's much less heralded recruits, Notre Dame's last three seasons under Weis resulted in records of 3-9, 7-6 and 6-6 before Weis was fired. This apparently goes against Wistrcill's stated goal of getting a coach with a winning pedigree. But there is no doubt, if Ianello is the choice, he will inherit a situation that in Wistrcill's view is not much different that the one Ianello and Weis had at Notre Dame. "We have the pieces in place to be successful immediately,'" the AD said after he fired Brookhart. "This is not a rebuilding job. The cupboard is full." Zipsrifle
OK , who e-mailed Tom and suggested this one?......let's not be shy, fess up! I thought it was a nice gesture to ask the fans for their opinion, but whoever the smart @$$ was that suggested this needs to send TW an e-mail quick! I've been through this 'He's a great recruiter, a real go-getter, give him a chance'' thing before and guess what, we just fired that guy. This is NOT what I expected and I'm not blindly going to back TW on this one. I'm sure he did his due dilligence and his homework, but that doesn't mean he's making the right call. Of course this guy was a great recruiter at Notre Dame, they make movies about Notre Dame football, we make YouTube videos. Hell all he had to do was sit the kid down, pop in "Rudy" and the kid was comitting to ND while whiping away his tears. Why can't we grab a successful coach from a lower division? I'm not very excited about this to be honest. I'm no expert, and I've been wrong pleanty of times before.....let's hope this is one of those times. Z.I.P.
How do you say his name= is it "E Ah nello"?It's Ya-nellow. Ya know? And Elton Alexander is pronounced "Zack the Zip". Ya know? Have faith Zips fans. For all we know, there may BE enough talent on the team to win -- but I'm not that concerned with a boring "secondary" sport like American football when we're getting ready to play for a NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP! Do you think Ya Nellow will ever have a shot at that? Seriously

RootforRoo44
I love the recruiting prowess, but no HC experience, or even as a high level coordinator makes me nervous. If he is the pick, I'd hope that a staff is put together that compensates for this. I agree! Resume seems a little thin. In 1999, he was named one of the top-10 recruiters in the nation by ESPN.com and one of the top six recruiters nationally by Sporting News. I would think being a top 10 recruiter at Notre Dame would be a given. Not sure I get this hire if it is true....Recruiting at Notre Dame is not a given. It's not the hardest place to recruit but it sure as hell isn't the easiest. Remember the requirements academically that ND has, it's not like Can't where any low life or thug can go. Buckzip
So we wanted a coach with some type of HC experience, even at a lower level. A coordinator at a bigger school was an option.Instead we go after a WR coach from a bad team....

GJGood
I'm hoping for the best and will give any guy hired to come in here and take over the benefit of the doubt at first.I will say, though, that my primary initial concern is that he has primarily, if not solely, been as BCS schools. While that doesn't make him a bad coach or a bad guy by any means I do wonder if it means that we are only a short-term stepping stone for him.I realize Akron would not be the destination job for many but I would like to see a guy who is willing to stick it out for 7 or 8 years. I'm afraid a guy with only big "name" school experience would be willing to bolt after just a season or two if another offer came along.Hopefully my fears prove to be nowhere near the truth.
