Zips vs. UNCG

38-24 in favor of the good guys at the half. That lead is mostly due to the 14-0 run we had when the score was knotted up at 4's. Been a pretty average game for us otherwise. Ronnie Steward is getting some PT though. First I've seen of him. Looks quick and comfortable with the ball. I was also pleased to see an appearance by Rob Ianello during a timeout.

I kept my eye on Steward whenever he was on the floor. His ball handling is excellent. He's quick, always on the move, and is really good at avoiding traps. He distributes the ball well, and once the ball is being passed quickly instead of someone holding onto it, there's usually an open man somewhere on the court. The whole team was better at moving the ball tonight, and everyone was unselfish. The McKnights both looked good, and Conyers continues to be consistent. Zeke appeared to be a little off tonight, but was better in the second half. Humpty appears to be better coming off the bench than starting. KD kept substituting in waves, and every time you blinked there was a different combination of players on the floor. UNCG was not the toughest of tests, but I do like the way the Zips are starting to come together as a team.EDIT: Oops, posted here before noticing the other thread.

UNCC? How did Cornbread look?
I think he means UNCG, not UNCC.....
Yes, my mistake. Typed it quickly. Btw, let me add that tonight was one of the lamest turnouts by fans i've seen at the JAR.I understand students being on break but man, no one wants to come out to watch an NCAA tournament team?!

Agreed. But this is a step in the right direction. UNCG is moderately recognizable and the Zips won handily. Lets hope URI wins their next 3 and is top 25 when they roll into town. That could be an eye opener, especially if we play like we did tonight.

Even though I have been skeptical that the "Joe Akron's" would suddenly awaken just because of an NCAA tournament appearance and the arrival of Zeke, I still didn't expect to see any crowds as low as this 2,200 number this year. And although I could not make it last night, I bet it was probably even smaller since there were certainly no-shows in the bottom sections. Disappointing.I know it's winter break from school, but it looks like those pictures show about 10 students behind the basket. Very disappointing as well.

Sorry, but I'm not about to drive over an hour to watch a UNC branch campus get stomped. I'm sure that was the mindset of most students. Also, if we arent going to get a new arena, can we at least get rid of that stupid track? I guarantee more students would sit with the Rowdies if it weren't on little portable bleachers. I'm probably in the minority on here, but not all of us are best buds with the rest of the AK-Rowdies. I guess I'm saying that the casual student is being scared away by the JAR's poor design. Who ever designed the JAR should be shot.

Interesting comment, especially when considered along with the following comment from another thread:
..... If we played a high-major at The Q, it would not draw well. Everyone knows we'd get beat. .....
So the Zips lose fans if the opponent is either too weak or too strong? That certainly narrows down the scheduling opportunities. When I attended a small college many years ago in another state, my friends and I went to EVERY home game and many of the away games that were within reasonable driving distance. We loved to see our team destroy an inferior opponent, and we never doubted that we had a chance against the strongest opponents. Sometimes we were rewarded with a big win over a name opponent -- an upset of a good Auburn team comes to mind. But we always had fun, and we never complained about the facilities, some of which made the JAR look like the Q. We just loved our team and loved our basketball, and everything else was irrelevant.I have the same feeling for the Zips today that I had for my alma mater's team 40 years ago.

Dave, I agree with your comments regarding loving your team regardless of opponents and facilities. However, i don't think that scheduling competitive, fan attracting games is as hard as you make it sound. If we want to use the RPI as a measuring stick, KD can leave out the top 30 RPI teams (too hard to beat) and also decide not to play any team with an RPI lower than 200. That still leaves 170 teams to schedule and we only need 10-15 ooc opponents.I understand that KD wants us to play a lot of games at home but i sriously fail to see the point in playing a stretch of Malone, UNCG (226) and St. Francis (325). I would rather play a decent team on a home-away basis especially if the away game is within a driving distance.

I haven't had any problems with the JAR. I'm afraid if you build a new arena for basketball, it will be infocision stadium/summa field all over again...if we can't fill the JAR, why build a new one when we can give updates to other programs that desperately need it more...I was one of those students...i live an hour away as well(alliance area)...but i will try to make it to the UIC, Valparaiso, and Rhode Island games. People I think don't get into the basketball "spirits" until conference play and february when it gets to time of confrence tournaments...It's sad when I see more people at a girl's basketball game then at a men's basketball game...

It's just lame how low the turnouts are overall. You should want to come see EVERY game you can if you're a fan. Hey i love the big game atmosphere as much as anyone but i also love pounding on some mismatched team every so often as well. Now if you aren't best buds with the Rowdies come sit on the North side lower level, that is the reason most of us do. It is the opposite side of the main Rowdies section and we all kind of just have fun and do what we want. Seriously, come join us sometime.
