akfan Posted January 23, 2010 Report Posted January 23, 2010 Does anyone know where I can get a copy of the 1976 Championship game against Montana St. I have a buddy who's dad played in the game but has never seen the game himself, so he wants a copy for his kids. If anyone has a copy or a VHS tape of it Ill pay for a copy, thanks guys. Quote
ZachTheZip Posted January 25, 2010 Report Posted January 25, 2010 I'm not sure who you would contact for that. Akron does a very poor job of celebrating its past. Quote

You would think someone there would have a copy of such an important event in the athletic history of the school. Quote
akfan Posted February 26, 2010 Author Report Posted February 26, 2010 I did, they do not have a copy of the game, I wonder if it was ever televised? Quote
johnnyzip84 Posted February 26, 2010 Report Posted February 26, 2010 I did, they do not have a copy of the game, I wonder if it was ever televised?I can't say for certain (was still in high school in the Pittsburgh area at the time), but I highly doubt the game was televised. This was before ESPN of course and ABC basically was the only network televising games in this period. There may have been some local broadcasts spread about the country, but these were few and far between even for the "name" programs. If I recall correctly, the MAC used to get one ABC "regional" slot per YEAR. I seem to remember watching a few Toledo-Central matchups in the late 70's to early 80's. I don't recall any football below the level of D-1 on TV until maybe 10-15 years ago. Quote
Hilltopper Posted February 26, 2010 Report Posted February 26, 2010 I did, they do not have a copy of the game, I wonder if it was ever televised? It was on TV. I remember watching. I doubt there are any copies out there. The VCR had just been introduced the year before, most people did not have one.Betamax (sometimes called Beta) is a home videocassette tape recording format developed by Sony, released on May 10, 1975http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Betamax Quote

I suppose it was probably a local broadcast (Channel 23?)? Quote
Z.I.P. Posted February 26, 2010 Report Posted February 26, 2010 I stand corrected. I suppose it was probably a local broadcast (Channel 23?)?Regional broadcasting of college football HAD been introduced by then. I remember the Pioneer Bowl broadcast myself, being a HS senior at the time. The game was played at a time of year (second week in Dec?) that it may have gotten a national broadcast. I also seem to remember watching Akron play vs La Tech, and Terry Bradshaw in the Grantland Rice Bowl in 1967/68. Quote

zipgrad77 Posted October 8, 2016 Report Posted October 8, 2016 I too would LOVE a copy of the 1976 Pioneer Bowl game. I was in the band and at the game in Wichita Falls TX. It was indeed televised back then to a national audience. My folks watched the game from Piqua OH and even saw me when the half time show was televised. Quote
Balsy Posted October 9, 2016 Report Posted October 9, 2016 I don't know how I missed this thread. I used to use this quite frequently when I was researching pieces I was writing: UA Archival services might be the first place to look. They have almost all media ever published by UA stored away somewhere. I'd imagine they also have copies (of some sort of film version) of the games as well. It's worth giving them a call and asking. They will even do a little digging for you and call you back from what I remember, and you can make an appointment to see any of it. Quote
