Captain Kangaroo Posted March 31, 2004 Report Posted March 31, 2004 Did anyone notice that there were no sappy odes to Dan Hipsher once he was "reassigned?" That, as opposed to the love-fest that accompanied Lee Owens' "reassignment." Even the sappy, gushing love-master herself, Tammy Pluto, had few words to say on Hipsher's behalf? It is debateable as to who was the more effective coach...Owens or Hipsher. Their Akron career ups and downs were eerily similar. After the beating that MT took after Owen's reassignment, it had to be a relief for him to actually have people lauding his decision. Hipsher HATED the concept of a "Midnight Madness." I wonder if Dambrot brings that back? I always liked such events. What do you do with the last scholarship? JUCO PG to give us some experience in the backcourt? Seems like were pretty well set at the #4 and #5 positions? With Peterson and Preston returning. the #3 spot seems solid too (what is Preston...#2...#3...#4...#5?) I say either a top HS or JUCO PG. If we're going to run, we need depth there. Quote
Zip Watcher Posted March 31, 2004 Report Posted March 31, 2004 Midnight madness would be interesting ... haven't been to one of those in a long time. They'd have to really get some interest drummed up on campus to pull that off the first season around. As for the new scholarship .. I think we need a bomber .. a 2 guard that can just light it up. Maybe Walther is that guy, but maybe adding an experienced JUCO guy to the mix wouldn't hurt us. Certainly, it's got to be the right kind of player and student, but it's worth considering. One of our big struggles this year was not being able to stretch the defense with consistent outside shooting. So my vote would be for a 2 that can shoot like Falknor. If I'm KD (and I'm not) .. I take my chances with Dru and Mario at the point next season. Quote
Guest Guest_SoFlaZip Posted March 31, 2004 Report Posted March 31, 2004 DITO. Man do I feel you on that #2 bomber. The experienced JUCO guy would be a 6/9 banger, rebounder, shot blocker, intimidator who just eats and sleeps DEFENSE. With the players returning, the addition of the #5 banger, and A COACH, I believe the NCAA is well within reach in 05 and definitally in 06. Guest Guest_SoFlaZip Posted March 31, 2004 Report Posted March 31, 2004 OBTW, If I'm KD (and I'm not) I'd have Peterson study Dell Curry tapes five hours a day. He would be require to shoot enough jump shots daily, no closer than twenty feet from the basket, until Peterson right wrist felt as if carpal tunnel syndrome was setting in (smile). I would advise Peterson that if I caught him shooting anything within five feet of the paint, other than a fast break lay in, he would have to run 100 laps backwards around the gym. Guest zip fan maybe Posted April 1, 2004 Report Posted April 1, 2004 We have a 2 guard that will light it up, Goddard, you just haven't seen him in action, but you will next year.... I agree with point guard, we have enough for now..... I doubt KD will do anything with extra scholarship, said they were "one over" already during his acceptance speech..... looks like right now there are 13-14 on team for next year.... Quote
Z-Pouch Posted April 1, 2004 Report Posted April 1, 2004 13-14 I see why you have the "maybe" in your name. I think we can be alittle more optimistic then that. I'm not talking championship till I see how things come together at the start of the season but 13-14 with the amount of talent coming back would be a bit dissappointing. It is way too early for any serious predictions. If the right guy is still available -- I agree with a shooter/scorer -- use the scholarship, otherwise hold it so KD can bring in more of his type of players. Have a little faith and jump on board Quote
zipper Posted April 1, 2004 Report Posted April 1, 2004 Not sure but I think he meant 13 to 14 PLAYERS, not next season's record. Quote
Guest Z-Pouch@work Posted April 1, 2004 Report Posted April 1, 2004 I stand corrected. A little too quick to react. Drinking and posting on the board dont mix Quote
Guest Guest_Z.I.P. Posted April 1, 2004 Report Posted April 1, 2004 The "New '2' Guard" for next season may not look that new at all, unless he shows up with a new do or something. I'm afraid the only obvious person for that slot is Darryl. And that's not necessarily good, because he's a natural '3'. After that the bench is shallow. I think there's a likelihood they will get at least one more rookie next year. I agree with the suggestion that they need to go JUCO for another point or a combo guard. You need depth there, and I'm not sold on the smurfs we have currently. Someone 6-1 or 2+ would be nice to have. And there's no way you're going to get a HS player anymore who can come in and contribute at the point. Will our recruits be met at the airport next season by a Hummer? No question though that we will depend much more on the post players to produce points. Even if DP comes back 100%, he's good, but no Tarver. Derrick was simply the best (i.e., most athletic) player in the MAC. Look for him in the Big League next season. Comments? Quote
Dr Z Posted April 1, 2004 Report Posted April 1, 2004 Derrick was simply the best (i.e., most athletic) player in the MAC. Look for him in the Big League next season. Comments? What "bigs" are you speaking of? Italian league? CBA? or NBA? Not that there is a great deal of defense played in the NBA, but Tarver plays very shoddy D. After watching the MAC tourney at the Gund, I would have to say Tarver may have been about the 4th or 5th best "talented" in the MAC. Quote
Z-Pouch Posted April 1, 2004 Report Posted April 1, 2004 Tarver in the NBA ?!? Europe but NBA. Agree with Dr Z., going into the tourney, I thought Tarver was pretty high on the MAC list but some guys really stepped it up. Williams@WMU was a man. He's got some talent and with additional weight/muscle could play at the next level. Without adding weight, he probably also heads to Europe. Quote
Z.I.P. Posted April 2, 2004 Report Posted April 2, 2004 Let me start with the admission that I've never seen DT in person. I wanted to go to Stockton to see him in the Cal JUCO tourney, but didn't make it. I talked with several people who saw him play at the JUCO level, and told me this guy could play just about anywhere. He was a five star (of 10) recruit, with no other MAC recruits above 3-star. Offered by Bob Knight + Fresno & UNLV. Akron got an incredible break with the presence of KD and DT wanting to come home. I feel strongly that rick would have been a much bigger player in a different coaching situation. But, we'll never know. I'm surprised to read the comment that he needs to put on weight. I've always heard that his physical strength at the '2' is his greatest asset. Yes -- of course he needs to learn better defense. But that's within his capacity if he puts his mind to it. I think Derrick can be as good as Derrick decides he wants to be. He needs more "inspiration" than most players perhaps, but he has the tools to play in the NBA, IMHO. Hopefully he finds that inspiration and gets his chance. Quote

Hopefully he finds that inspiration and gets his chance. Having seen DT play about 25 MAC games in his career...I can say he has ZERO chance of ever playing in the NBA. He is small...maybe 6'3"? His primary shot is a fade-away "push-shot," with a release almost at chin-level. In a league where Bryan Hipsher gets 7 mpg, that might work. In the NBA, he would get it stuffed back in his face relentlessly. DT is a poor ball handler...not good for a 6'3" guy in the NBA. He is a bad passer...not good for a 6'3" guy in the NBA..and he's a liability on defense against even MAC-level talent...not good for a guy in the NBA. I've seen guys like Sczerbiak, Hunter, Daniels, McCloud, Head, Boykins, Trent, Slay etc play, and each time I saw something special that foreshadowed their presence in the NBA. With DT...he could score in the MAC. At times he could score B-I-G in the MAC...but there is no inkeling of legit NBA potential. Maybe you'll see him on the "And One" tour as "T-4-Three," or something like that, but if Derrick wants to play in the pros, he'd better brush up on his Spanish, Italian or French because other than the CBA-type level, it ain't gonna happen here. Guest SoFlaZip @ home Posted April 2, 2004 Report Posted April 2, 2004 Quote Will our recruits be met at the airport next season by a Hummer? Not if the recruits are the point guards everyone is clamoring for, and, if the Hummer belongs to COACH JAMES or a key member (Drue II) of the posse (smile). Im sure COACH JAMES would be happy to meet at the airport a 6/9 manster who would, among other things, protect against inadverdant matador defensive lapses. Please advise what I'm missing with the the Preston, Myers, Futch triumvirate's ability, collectively (15) fouls, or indiviudally, to provided this mandatory defensive presence? I've been pleading on this board for years for this defensive presence -ANYWHERE. I still have nightmares of a point guard, Carlos Arroyo, currently point guard for the Utah Stars and formerly point guard for Florida International University (FIU), personally physically intimidate the ENTIRE Zips team and kick a highly touted Zips' forwards a$$ while ALL THE PLAYERS AND COACHES for the Zips stood around totally intimidated AND TAKEN OUT OF THEIR GAME PLAN. Again I say without hesitation or reservation, with the players WE have returning, OUR players coach and his new system, and a manster in the middle, the NCAA is attainable in 05. KD has set his goal to out grow the JAR. He will never reach his goal by prerparing for SRO Memorial Hall?
