Rowdies...True Fans....Represent

I have been a tremendous fan of Akron basketball during my time here at the University and have always been proud of the fan base surrounding it. The Rowdies have always been creative, exciting, and positive for our guys. The fans have traveled suprisingly well, I was at the NIT games, many road games, and saw the support out in Oregon. But much to my displeasure since the end of this 2nd cant loss some of our "fans" seem to have lost perspective. The perspective of being a fan is to support, cheer, whatever you want to call it. I understand that if you are a true fan you are upsetted by things like these 2 bad losses and feel the need to vent. I think zipsnation is a great forum to do that. However, I unfortunately was the witness to some things over the weekend that were outrageous. I think it absurd for fans to think they can use players facebook walls to criticize and harass them, or see them in public and criticize them. I dont mind the, " hey guys lets get it together...GO ZIPS". But the, "im a rowdy/former rowdy/true fan and use, you guys F***** suck" is stupid. I dont think anyone would believe that our guys wanted to lose that game, especially the way it happened, so if your a true fan lets pick them up and get them ready for the tourney. The last thing they need is to worry about harassment from "fans". There is a reason they are on the floor/bench/coachs box and we are in the stands/on the couch. If you consider yourself a true fan recognize what your place is, here-forums, in the stands, cheering on our zips, not in the players personal lives trying to draw some sort of reaction. I am not posting this to scold all fans or rowdies, just to hold accountable those classifying themsleves among the rest of the true fans and doing it entirely the worng way. So if your a fan lets stand up, cheer loud, and push our zips to the dance. And if your one of the few, or know those people, who are doing it the wrong way, grow up.

No real rowdie or fan would do that. Aka no one who is on this board who would read this would say such things to the players.

Having fans is great, but people who say they're fans just for association/popularity ruins the true fan experience. I hope the athletes who received the messages do not get offended by the comments from ignorant "fans". If the basketball team can learn from their mistakes against Can't and play with confidence, another MAC title could be soon forthcoming. :champs:

I think 99% of all fans are good. But people love to make examples of the 1% that aren't.There was one particular post I removed from our site that I will only say was "highly embarrassing" to ZipsNation. That single sentence was plucked and dropped on a K.e.n.t. message board as an example of "typical" Zips fan's behavior.Of course, the K.e.n.t. fan that plucked that information failed to mention the 5,200 Zips fans that gave Laing Kennedy a standing ovation prior to the game. Or the fact that UA was classy enough to recognize the guy.99.9% of ZipsNation represented great on Friday night. Don't get hung up on the 0.1%. It's not worth it.

MAJOR props for the way Akron honored Laing Kennedy, I was very taken back...in a good way of course.I just wanted to address the 1% that didn't behave as "good fans" last Friday night. As a K.e.n.t. fan I only ask that the May 4th shootings be untouched when you guys want to "bash the f.lashes." I know its a rivalry what seriously, young people died speaking their mind...is that really something to joke about??In return, start naming things we as K.e.n.t. fans can do better and we'll hopefully refrain from that behavior. Hopefully good sportsmanship can start creeping its way back in to this heated rivalry of ours...our side could use more of it as well.BTW - I was treated well at the game for the most part, thank you. I have spoken my peace.

Don't care if I get bashed on this one, I completely agree with Fl.a.sh here. For those of us that were alive and remember it, it was horrific (and by the way, for those of you that don't know the National Guard was also on Akron's campus that day, the same thing "could" have happened at Akron as well). That day also changed K.S.U. permanently, for years after that it was known as the place to go if you had a beef with anything, regardless of whether you were a student or it had anything to do with the University. That perception (and maybe reality) persists to this day.I love the rivalry with Can't, I love the cleverness of coming up with original things and making fun of each other, but's that one thing that really doesn't have any business in the rivalry.

Again, I'll state - You can never get rid of every idiot a-hole. When you get 5,500 people in a gym, someone...I'll call him "0.1% Guy"...is going to say something totally out of line. Usually, that guy is a teenager, and he's drunk.Coming on ZipsNation to tell people not to joke about May 4th accomplishes nothing. Everyone on ZipsNation knows it. There were scores of K.e.n.t.-related jokes on our site this past week, and scores appear every time we play K.e.n.t. Never once was May 4th mentioned.
