Defense?!?!

Our defense continues to be exploited and it will cost us the MAC Championship if changes aren't made today. The constant switching is allowing the opposition to find a match up they can exploit and then do it. Yesterday we had what should have been a classic match-up POY versus Defensive POY...why switch off throughout the game. Jimmy's job 1 yesterday should have been to shut down Kool. The day before it should have been to shut down Medlock. Today it should be to shut down Basset....I love Jimmy's all around game, but someone needs to check a guy who can almost single handedly beat us. Yesterday's game was driving me nuts. The funny thing about this is B McKnight played down the stretch and I can only imagine because he can hit a foul show if fouled and play defense otherwise it would have been Zeke....B McKnight couldn't hit a shot to save his life. So obviously this decisions are being made, but why aren't they being to stop the number 1 player?I've got 12 going tonight and can't wait for the game. I think this match up puts luckiest team in the tournament versus the hottest team in the tournament.....the problem with that is someone is either going to run out of luck or cool off. I think it is easier to run out of luck than to cool off when your hottness is based off of talent. I think the answer is stifling defense.Go Zips!

Am I crazy, or did Brett McClanahan play better defense on Kool? I think Brett's defensive game has improved leaps and bounds from last year. He was focused again last night. I'm surprised he isn't getting more PT. Overall IMO we didn't defend Kool tight enough. We wouldn't pick him up until he crossed the three point line. When he didn't have the ball we would lay off him and try doubling down low. We should have had at least one person in his side pocket the whole game. If I coached that game Kool would have woke up very sore today.

McClanahan did an alright job on Kool, but he lost him a few times too. I think Jimmy did a better job on him. I think a lot of you are underestimating just how difficult it is to guard a guy who is the only offensive weapon on a REALLY bad team who has the heart of a lion and is trying to extend his career by one more game. To me, that is what we have run into the last couple nights. Medlock had been through so many medical issues only to finally be healthy for a full season and he had that look in his eye that said "I'm leaving it all on the floor cause I don't want it to end here." Same thing from Kool last night. I don't know as you are going to see the same thing from OU's guards tonight. Bassett has been playing well, but I think he snuck up on some people. I think Can't and Miami were gameplanning against Cooper who has had an awful tournament and Bassett has snuck up on them. I don't think he is going to sneak up on the Zips. In the end, I'm a little concerned, but I don't think it is time to push the panic button at all.

Screw "luckiest"...every team needs some luck to help them advance, OU included. But our guys have played their asses off and have come up with clutch play and big shots to advance...it hasn't been luck.

I guess I am just a stupid, old fan. Tell me where our guys played their asses off.Zips basketball is not suppose to be three minutes of great play per game.

I agree that Nitro did a good job on Kool while relieving Conyers. Neither player was perfect in guarding Kool, but who could be? WMU constantly ran picks and anything else they could do to shake Conyers or Nitro off of Kool to get a mismatch defender on him. At some points there are situations where the defenders have to switch off or they lose Kool completely. Zeke even ended up on Kool a couple of times, and did a pretty decent job of staying with him despite Kool's advantage in quickness. There's a limit to how tightly you can guard Kool without setting off a chorus of MAC ref whistles. I thought the refs let Kool get away with a few things. But overall the game was called better than any of the other games I've seen at the Q this tournament. The refs only called a few minor touch fouls, and were generally fair and balanced. So it was a great game to watch, even if it was too close to allow Zips fans any time to relax.
