Just nosing around the many sites associated with College soccer to see what it's all about. I came across the College Soccer News Preseason top 30. I take a look at it. Page 1, no Zips, nor on page 2, 3, or 4. In TINY print at the bottom of the page 4 I look at the "Other receiving votes" category and there, at what would have been spot 47, the Zips are mentioned.

Looking at some of the other schools on this list, it totally amazes me that Akron can be at #1. The facilities, campus, tradition these other, big name schools have must put Akron to shame. Still, Coach and the guys go out there and get it done. You know a lot of these teams are saying "Well, if we played Akron we'd beat them, they are only in the MAC." Our guys have pulled themselves up from their bootstraps and I hope they go out there tomorrow and show the rest of College Soccer they deserve their #1 ranking! A lot of people (including me) didn't even give these guys the slightest shot of being where they are today. They need to keep that in mind and play with a chip on their shoulder for the rest of the season!

Go Zips!

Category-- trivia, the Zips lost the 1986 National Championship to Duke (PUKE), there was a player on that Duke (PUKE) team named Ken Lolla. Guess where Mr. Lolla is now!! :D

With ball ammunition lock and load.

Sorry, ol'timer, but I have to correct you on this one. Ken was playing for the Canton Invaders I believe in 1986. His final year at Duke was about 1982 or '83. He graduated from DU in 84. I'm trying to remember some of the players on that team which beat Akron at the Tacoma Dome. I do remember Duke beat the Columbia team with Desmond Armstrong in the semis. What a speed merchant Armstrong was on the US national team before his injuries. That 1-0 final win for Duke was one of the few in that era that didn't go to OT.

BTW -- can you tell us sometime what "ball ammunition lock and load" means? I'm sure I'm not the only one wondering.:P

What if, the Zips lost to St Johns or tied......... Would they still be number 1? They have quality wins and would have lost/tied to the #3 team. All other teams ranked have losses and or ties.

Akron - wins against Maryland, Buffalo, SMU, and Penn St.

New Mexico - tie against unranked

St Johns - 1 loss, 3 ties

UNC - 2 loss, 1 tie

Uconn - 2 lost, 1 tie

UVA - 1 loss, 2 tie

Indiana - 1 loss, 3 tie

Hopefully it does not happen, but St Johns does not give up many goals.

Projection...........1 - nil Zips.
