Zip Watcher Posted April 14, 2010 Report Posted April 14, 2010 Steward is most certainly a D1 caliber PG. Hope this is erroneous. Quote
Hilltopper Posted April 14, 2010 Report Posted April 14, 2010 Steward is most certainly a D1 caliber PG. Hope this is erroneous. That may be true, but wouldn't he have to sit out a year if he transfered to another D-1 program? After all he has gone through, already sitting out because of injury, I would think he would want to play right away. Quote
ZachTheZip Posted April 14, 2010 Author Report Posted April 14, 2010 Of course none of these names are that surprising. As far as sitting out a year, it is possible to not have to do it. If a coach releases you from scholarship, you don't have to sit out. Most of the time it's impossible for some administrative reason. Remember that Bubba could have played for OU immediately if Dambrot had released his scholarship. NIU's Darion Anderson won't have to sit out a year because he was released. Quote

False, in basketball you must sit out a year, release or not. If a coach releases you, you are eligible for aid the year you are sitting out. If you do not get the release, you are stuck paying your own way. Quote

It has to do with being scholarship eligible during your transfer year. There are some wrinkles related to graduation however. The Duke PG who played QB @ Syracuse got through a loophole related to the fact that he had graduated, he was eligible to play immediately as he enrolled in grad school @ Syracuse. This could apply to Jake Anderson from NIU (graduating, per some reports) and possibly Swiech if he's done at the end of the summer. I'm not sure about the specifics of this, so don't cite me as an authority .. but the Duke/Cuse guy definitely did NOT have to sit. Quote

zip37 Posted April 14, 2010 Report Posted April 14, 2010 Good fortune to all three, I hope they have a better fate than John Ryback and Bubba did. I'm saddened that Ronnie is leaving, but with his health issues here he might be a bit gun-shy. Stay healthy guys! Quote
Quickzips Posted April 14, 2010 Report Posted April 14, 2010 Certainly makes sense for Swiech and Sullivan. Neither of them were ever going to see significant playing time here. Might as well find someplace where they can. I suppose you can debate how much sense it makes for Steward. He was slowly working himself back into the rotation, but it was pretty tough finding minutes for him. After all the injuries and all he has overcome it will be tough to see him go if this is true. On the other hand, this certainly opens up the possibility of more recruits that has floated around here the last month or so. Be interesting to see what KD will do with the additional two scholarships. Quote
johnnyzip84 Posted April 14, 2010 Report Posted April 14, 2010 I'm not too surprised if this is the case. Previous ZNO Thread. Quote
zippyman23 Posted April 14, 2010 Report Posted April 14, 2010 Goodman said he confirmed all the names on the list with at least one of their coaches. Looks like all three are gone. Quote
ZachTheZip Posted April 14, 2010 Author Report Posted April 14, 2010 Goodman said he confirmed all the names on the list with at least one of their coaches. Looks like all three are gone. Yep. And now that leads to two questions. Where are they going, and who is coming in to replace them? This makes room for two more recruits. It might lead to one of the walk-ons getting a scholarship for a year if we can't find a 5th recruit. Quote
skip-zip Posted April 14, 2010 Report Posted April 14, 2010 Wow. Although not surprised, you still are a little disappointed when it looks like it actually is "official". I agree with ZipWatcher about Ronnie. I truly thought he'd become the answer to our Dru-less point guard issue 3 years ago. Unfortunately, he's had his setbacks. But, I really thought he'd eventually work his way back. Whenever your play is limited like that for 2-3 years, it's a hard battle to return to form on any kind of short time frame. Really hate to see Alex go. Some of my old buddies who followed him in HS thought that it wasn't looking good for him when he was going to be seriously fighting for early-career playing time behind so many experienced guards coming out of his RS year. I guess they were right, but we'll unfortunately never get to see if he'd show some of the brilliance he displayed in HS, and why we recruited him. Only the solid exhibition game performance when some of our guards were out at the beginning of last season. I really wish that he would have stuck it out. After Steve and Darryl graduated this coming year, he would have clearly had more opportunities. But...it's hard for me to argue about a guy who simply just wants to play, and wants to play sooner rather than later. And geez. Swiech is such a nice kid. And a crowd favorite. But, it sure makes sense to have that scholarship to put to better use. Quote

mes102 Posted April 14, 2010 Report Posted April 14, 2010 These were the 3 that i was told that were transferring...i just wanted a source out other than me on it first...I heard that Swiech has an offer from Walsh...since Walsh made it to the NAIA national championship game last year but lost with no inside prescence, then i must say that Walsh is probably where he is going.... Sullivan was the one all year that i thought would transfer with all of our guards coming back(at that time), and another possible guard in Michael Green(he's a SF in hs, probably a guard in college), but probably will move down as well... Steward is really suprising to me when i heard of it. I had to ask several times if he really was transferring after hearing it the first time. He's one of those players that I thought could of started or been a regular in the rotation in half of the MAC schools(basically the West division)...so he may go to a lower D1 school like a Cleveland State, or a Youngstown State, or even a Robert Morris? We'll find out soon enough... Quote
ZachTheZip Posted April 14, 2010 Author Report Posted April 14, 2010 There's probably some rule against going to another MAC school in their transfer papers, but I think if all three of them could go to Toledo they would all start immediately. If all three are leaving, then the final opened scholarship will very likely remain with D-Rob. Quote
RACER Posted April 15, 2010 Report Posted April 15, 2010 i saw a thread where arkon was looking at a 6-6 quincy diggs guard for new orleans.i guess they dropped thier b-ball program? don't know how much truth there is to this.maybe this is what kd was speaking about.it would be nice to have a 6-6 guard that can play defense. Dave in Green Posted April 15, 2010 Report Posted April 15, 2010 Rasor comfirms it all. Rasor even confirms something he shouldn't be confirming because it's dead wrong. Maybe it's a sign that his head is more into politics these days than basketball. With the departure of the three transfers and two seniors (Jimmy Conyers and Chris McKnight), Akron has five open scholarships. Abreu and the other three recruits will account for four of them. Barring another signee, guard Darryl Roberts will use the fifth scholarship, after playing his prior three years as one of the most productive walk-ons in the country. Quote
MRasor0200 Posted April 15, 2010 Report Posted April 15, 2010 Apparently, we can start looking for a fifth recruit -- a small forward. Quote
RACER Posted April 15, 2010 Report Posted April 15, 2010 i think diggs is the fifth recruit.i looked at his stats, and nothing stood out at me.hopefully the guy can play some defense on the larger guards/small forwards.at least the guy has played college b-ball.he averaged about 14 min a game. Quote
