The Official Send Getsy back to Pitt thread

For all the Owens bashing that went on here -- his teams were never shut out at home and I'd argue never shut out by a winless team I may be wrong.

The real question is what is wrong with this team. Don't give me rebuilding either. It appears more and more -- others (except Can't) -- are moving forward and Akron has decided to turn around and head the other way.

Getsy's not going anywhere. I can't wait to hear the lastest round of excuses on the board. You know, it was raining......I'll say it again, sticking with Getsy when he is this bad shows a lot of loyalty or that the QB cupboard is bare and void of any talent right now. Since I still have a little faith in JD, I'll go with the cupboard is bare and Getsy's the best we've got for the next year and a half.

We seem to be regressing as the season goes on.

Will we win another game this year?

There are some really bad teams left on the schedule. Even BGSU without Omar can be considered pretty bad after what happened today. I would HOPE that there are several wins left. Thinking positive, Army would probably beat everyone left on our schedule.

1) I said at the beginning of this year that we would be lucky to win five games. Others said it, as well. I stand by it. We all got jacked up after a better start than expected - this year looks like the opposite of last year with our 0-3 start and strong finish.

2) Leadership. JD has said several times that we need senior leadership and we apparently are struggling with it this year. Remember, LO fell down on the job recruiting towards the end of his tenure. We all talked about it, the current coaching staff is certainly aware of it, and it is (obviously) being fixed.

3) I heard that freshman QB from FL is a total stud on the field. Haven't seen him play - anybody know anything (Jackson)?

Getsy does not appear to be the answer. Brookhart will do the right thing eventually. We are VERY young and green. All will yet be well and we should just hang in there and get through this season, just as several of us said pre-season.

Random thoughts, as per usual:

* Absolutely pathetic performance by the Zips. Someone above pointed it out very well: We got shut out at home by an 0-6 team.

* Mentally, we are a very weak team. The offense has no faith in itself. The defense is demoralized by the ineptitude of the offense. It doesn't take a genius to look at the body language of the OL's and WR's after one of Luke's incomplete wounded ducks to see that they've lost faith in the guy.

* Put Jabari in at QB. What good is he at WR if we don't have a QB that can throw him anything but 5 yard dinks. At least Jabari could run an keep a defense honest.

* Why no Ferguson? Not even for one series? I don't get it.

* Why no Alex Allen in the backfield? Why so little Dennis Kennedy? With the exception of a couple big runs versus Miami, Biggs hasn't done anyting to merit the 85% RB workload that he's been getting. Maybe dropping his workload a bit makes him more effective?

* We beat NIU. We beat MTSU on the road. This isn't our most talented Zips squad in years, but it sure has more talent than it showed last night.

* I think I'll skip the BG road trip and check out the soccer team this weekend. This uninspired Zips squad is wearing me down.

* Will JD do anything different this week? The script that we've followed the past four weeks has been woefully ineffective. It would really hearten me to see the Zips try ANYTHING different...aside from superficial stuff like changing the color of their pants or removing names from the jerseys.

* You really notice when Kiki Gonzales is out of the game. Six yards up the middle is a given if he's on the sidelines.

* As someone stated above: EMU's getting better. OU's getting better. WMU's getting better. If we don't get our act together we're going to be associated with the Ball State's, Temple's, Buffalo's and Can't's of the MAC. Maybe we already are...which is unreal for a team that put up 48 points and a "W" vs NIU just a couple weeks ago.

* Who kidnapped Dominic Hixson?

I expected 6 wins this season. I still believe our existing talent and our schedule should equate to 6 wins. That said: I don't think Luke can lead this team to another win. I really miss confidence and leadership from the QB position. I think the team does too. Can Ferguson instill this? Beats me. I'd love to see if he could. Could Jabari? I think so.

I'll say it straight out. No, the QB cupboard is NOT bare and void of talent. It seems that JD is very loyal to the promise that he made to Getsy and not willing to let another QB on the field because if that QB can throw the deep ball and get something going with the offense, then JD has a problem. Obviously Getsy is our QB, like it or not, and Ferguson will never get a chance to play QB at Akron. He is a very talented QB and has the ability to be a positive leader and influence on this team. He also has a very strong arm and would give us the deep threat which we do not have with Getsy. What a shame that as talented as he is we will never get to see him play for Akron.

If that is the case maybe our problem lies on the sidelines because Getsy is terrible, and if the coaching staff is to ignorant to see that, then I worry about our future.

Agreed on all counts. There is no way you can tell me that Luke is the best we got. It's looking more and more each week like JD is being too stubborn to realize that. Bottom line is we've got to change something if for no other reason than to spark this team (and no I don't mean pant colors or names coming off the back of jersey's). Put Ferguson in there, if he doesn't work put Jabari in there, if that don't work then screw Carlton Jackson's redshirt year. I don't care but do something. These players HAVE to be given the message, if you don't perform on the field then your not going to play. Period.

On one positive note (if you can find one from last night) attendance looked to be pretty good considering the conditions. I know we had alot of Army fans over there but the home stands had a decent crowd last night as well. On the flip side was Can't whom our soccer team can probably outdraw.

We've got a major major problem on this football team. The QB cupboard is definitely not bare. Also, if you can remember preseason, when we were trying to set our next QB, nobody really set themselves apart from one another. So what is so special about Getsy that cannot try something different? We can't get much worse than this. Jabari and Fergusen are both legit talents that could possibly step in. At this point, the staff needs to send a strong message to the players. If you don't produce, you sit. If the veterans can't get it done, then get the young guys in there and start giving them experience so we can be at least become minutely competitive in the future. Nobody on this team plays with any enthusiasm or heart. Is that due to a lack of leadership or lack of coaching?

What a horrible, ugly game in all aspects. We wonder why nobody comes to watch the zips play. I found the answer.

I don't know if removing Getsy from QB is going to make a difference. I do know this. He has not played the same since injuring his hand against CMU. Jabari is not the answer. I'm sick of his lazy performances at WR and I don't want him at QB. Ferg? Well, if we want to go from a QB with little mobility to one with zero mobility, that is the answer. Getsy is all we have for now. Get over it.

One thing I noticed last night was that the robotic nature of our offense does not allow our receivers to improvise once the pocket breaks down. I went to about five Pitt games Brookhart's last year there and Rutheford (sp?) had the same problems scrambling Getsy does now. Our receivers do not have the natural ability to get free as we have seen in the past. Maybe if they would stop jogging around when the qb scrambles, we would be better off.

Speaking of jogging. We seem to have two speeds as of late. One is jog, the other is walk. Our offensive line jogs onto the field to get in the huddle and walk to the line. Let's start moving a little faster guys.

Akron needs to change the pace when their offense is having trouble. Why did we not go to a hurry up offense in the middle of the third quarter when things weren't going well? That is always a good way to pick up the pace of a team. I think the reason we don't do things like this is the coaches are as robotic as the offense. They spend an insane amount of time looking at film hoping to figure out that one play that will get them two yards on their own 30 yard line, they forget about the big picture or even the human factor.

Maybe some of the younger guys can answer this question, but why is our blocking technique one where the OL blocks with their shoulders perpendicular to the line? This appears to be a horrible technique because it allows bleed through. You don't see this technique on Sundays. We should be doing what they do on Sunday. It's no wonder we can't get our running game going. We don't force our will on others.

When we went for fourth down when we were down by ten, were we on the 25? Hard to tell from the beer garden. If so, I had a flushback to the Owens years. We needed to break our cherry and get on the board. Maybe that would have given us some momentum.

Someone brought up the Owens years. I have no doubt the Zips would have scored under Owens last night. I also have no doubt that that loser would have found a way to lose that game like almost every game he coached. Enough said.

There has been a lot of talk about leadership on this board and I think a lot of misguided opinions about what leadership is. It starts with giving 100% effort every play from a few of your best players. Until that happens, guys can walk off the field screaming and throwing helmets all they want, but they are not showing leadership until they give 100%. I'm not even certain we saw great leadership last season as everyone likes to think. It was good, but not great. Great leaders lead from the start of the season, not six games into it. I think our schedule was more easy after the first five games and we won five in a row and then lost to a better team the final game. Nothing magical about that.

I had a chance to catch up with a bunch of players from the early Faust years last night and to a man, they were offended by the effort the players were giving. We may have had half our team in jail by mid season, but at least the other half out on bail was giving 100%.

Man am I really pissed at myself today :wall: . I went with "somebody" and picked the Zips to win last night forgetting what I wrote after either the Buffalo or Miami game. I said then that I thought the wheels were about to fall off the team. I had a feeling then and should have stuck with it. The wheels are completely off of this team. I think losing the remainder of the games is not out of the question (Oddly enough, we could still win the MAC East, but that won't happen). We should really be talking about how many points the team will score. My guess is less than 75 the remainder of the season. If we lose out and win only three games, it will have repercussions for years to come. :nutkick: I see trouble on the horizon. :(:(:(

One last thing. I was talking with a prominent business man from Akron who is also a graduate of the University after the game downtown. He said he would love to go to some games and would even buy season tickets if they had a stadium on campus, but he refuses to go to the Rubber Bowl. We need a new stadium NOW. I don't know how much longer I can take going out to that dump and have the team lose. It would be easy to swallow if the stadium was in a decent part of town and I did not have to walk through mud to get to my car after the game.

GP, it may not get better, but it sure as hell can't get much worse. And if you STILL think Getsy is a good QB then I suggest you go back to going to Pitt games.

It can always get worse.

You can take your suggestion and stick it up your :moon: . I'll spend my time the way I want to.

I'm totally frustrated right now. Don't know what to say. Was Rohr the only guy playing out there last night? Our "New, fast Defense" was getting out run last night. Then, Army was getting 4-5 yards every run up the middle. I'm glad the Army QB cound't hit anyone long or we would have lost 34-0.

I think Hixon is gunshy on punt returns. I don't know if it's because he got beat up the first few games or if he's worried about fumbling it.

Biggs is slow, but always gives a good second effort. The OL can't open holes so he has to try the corner, which doesn't work. The OL also can't pass protect.

Getsy, well, any progress we was making before is all but gone now. He sucks! I'm all for Jabari or Ferguson going in now. Getsy had about 10 chances to tuck the ball and make a break for it. Instead, he makes some crappy sidearm throw that looks like a 5 year old threw it. IMO, he's more worried about gettting hit than winning the game. The passes that aren't hitting the ground 10 yards in front of the receivers are floating through the air. I would favor Ferguson right now because of his arm and that he'll actually throw over the middle. Jabari isn't showing me a lot at WR, so why do I give him a shot at QB?

If we want to win any more games this year, we need a shakeup. I honestly think we may be one of the worst teams in the country right now. :wall:
