InfoCision bid for State Championship

Recommended Posts

An update on UA's bid to host the High school football state championships.

http://highschoolsports.cleveland.com/news...-championships/

Akron: Representatives from the Akron Summit Convention and Visitors Bureau made two proposals. One called for a co-op between the University of Akron's InfoCision Stadium and Can't State's Dix Stadium to split the games over two days, similar to what Stark County's Fawcett Stadium in Canton and Paul Brown Tiger Stadium in Massillon do now. The other called for all the games to be played at InfoCision over a three-day period.

The other possible sites are Cincinnati(Nippert and Paul Brown), Ohio Stadium, and obviously, Stark County.

Bowling Green and Toledo petitioned for a bid but both were denied.

Who do you think gets it? Which would be the best decision? How do you feel about sharing it with Dicks( :puke: ) stadium?

The championships should be played in Columbus. It's crazy that people from Cincinnati have to travel to NE Ohio for the state championships. This really isn't a tOSU thing.

If they did get it at The Big Phone Booth, they should do an all or nothing. They should plan the season so it falls on Thanksgiving weekend so the Friday games don't interrupt parking for classes. Then there would be plenty of parking for everyone even if they had one game after another.

A references to a phone booth in 2010 strikes me as an anachronism. Maybe there are a few still in existence. My guess is most college students have never used one. I just can't see that name catching on.

I do agree with you that people from SE Ohio should not have to travel to NE Ohio for a championship game. Columbus is the place that makes sense.

Putting the game in the middle of the state is not a bad idea, but housing it in the same location for 20 years is certainly not the right answer. I think it should actually rotate between the north and south for three year periods. I don't think OSU is the right though. I've been to the state championship game and seen the empty seats. Can you imagine how many empty seats there would be at 100,000 seat stadium?

I'm tired of sharing stuff with Can't State! There are so many programs that are already shared and most prominently, the Colleges of Medicine and Pharmacy. Both schools would have much stronger and well-recognized programs if Akron had the STEM graduate and professional programs (near the city where they should be) and Can't had the liberal arts graduate programs. The idea that sharing somehow benefits both schools and the region is ridiculous. In reality, it dilutes the contribution of any one university and leads to them competing against each other locally as opposed to being distinguished at the national and international level.

Consider the programs that are unique to each school versus shared. Akron's nationally ranked programs in Polymer Science and Engineering and I/O Psychology don't exist at Can't State. I am sure there are other examples including the converse being true for mutual programs.

:screwks: Not to mention that Dix Stadium is a POS especially compared to the Info.

Agreed, a rotation every 3 years is the way to go. Hold it in a stadium that seats 25k-30K so it seems like people are there. Wrestling has been held at Wright State for how many years now? Softball is in Akron. It is ok to hold titles in places other than the middle of the state.

My guess is that Columbus will get it. The OHSAA wants to maximize revenue and holding it in Columbus will probably generate the most attendance.

Maybe you are right. Since InfoCision is a telemarketing company, maybe The Big Dialer would be better.?. Telemarketing companies use computers called dialers to dial your number and call you at home when you are eating dinner.

There's a whole lot more involved in hosting the games than opening the gates to the stadium. The reason the OHSAA doesn't switch venues often is because of all the behind the scenes work that makes these events run smoothly. I hope they leave them in Stark county. Cowlumbus already has tOSU, its more important to spread the wealth.

Iy would seem to me that the logical reason the championship game was moved from Columbus (I remember Mogadore playing on the old OSU astroturf) to NE Ohio was somehow in relation to the cradle of football up here! HOF, Canton Bulldogs, Massillon Tigers (Paul Brown), Akron Pro's (1st NFL champs and Fritz Pollard) Jim thorpe etc etc.... Akron still fits that equation. If adding a game at Dix helps us rein in this event i'm all for it!

I would say UA has a real good chance at landing the contract. Theres pretty much nothing bad about the location that I could think of. Perfect capacity (evidenced by the playoff games we hosted last year) along with perfect amenities in the form of many suites and club seats and a very roomy press box. I hope we don't have to share the games with Can't - I honestly cannot see the value of playing their games there. All rivalry bias aside, I really have never found Dix Stadium to be that "nice".

I have also heard that if UA gets the contract either in full or in part, they will be setting up the website to allow people to stream the live video of the games online.

As a person that actually played in a OHSAA State Championship game, I strongly recommend they actually keep them in Canton and Massillon because they are the most intimate high school environment's you will find in Ohio.

Playing at Columbus = Empty 'Shoe

Playing at Cincy = Half Filled Nippert

Playing at Akron/Can't = Half Filled as well

We need to remember that these are the HIGH SCHOOL State Championship games! Keep them at high school stadiums. The folks from Western Ohio in the M.A.C. do not mind the trek at all. They travel VERY well!

I couldn't agree more. I'd be willing to bet Doc Proenza feels the same way. Unfortunately, you would have to take this one up with Eric Fingerbutt. He believes that if your school doesn't start with "Ohio" and end with "State" then you simply aren't capable of having strong programs all on your own. And you better believe Can't will hang on to this whole collaboration with everything they have. With the exception of liquid crystals, I'm pretty sure that this is all that Can't has as far as modern health/science specialties go.

Perhaps we can use Stiles as a selling point...

Any chance of having vendors use that area for food sales?

Or even, just use it as a place for fans to get warm.

I know that would be difficult with in/out stuff, but perhaps they could gate off the street and areas to allow fans to go into the Stiles.

I like to think I am relatively tough..but sitting outside for all those games has NEVER been my cup of tea.

It looks like Akron's bid is not going to be enough to get the games moved to the Info.

OHSAA choice down to two

Stark County and Columbus are the finalists being considered to host the 2012-14 Ohio High School Athletic Association state football championships. On Wednesday, OHSAA Director of Information Services Tim Stried confirmed that the committee considering the bids has narrowed the choices to Fawcett Stadium and Paul Brown Tiger Stadium here, or Ohio Stadium.

A site visit to Stark County is June 2. The group will visit Ohio Stadium on June 8. A Board of Control meeting is set for June 10, at which time the board could vote on a recommendation. Cincinnati and Akron made bid proposals to the OHSAA as well.

Thats somewhat depressing. Im hoping that they stick to Stark County because having the games at Ohio Stadium will be god-awfully boring. Im absolutely sure everyone wants to see a 102,000 seat stadium only have maybe 10% of the stadium filled

  • 1 month later...

COLUMBUS — Stark County likely will find out next month if it will host the state high school football championships beyond 2011.

No action was taken on bids for the title games Thursday during the Ohio High School Athletic Association’s board of directors meeting. The board received no recommendations from the site selection committee regarding proposals from Stark County and Columbus. A vote by the board is expected to take place next month.

The current bidding proposals cover the state championships from 2012-14. Stark County has hosted games annually since 1990.

Akron and Cincinnati also submitted bids but didn’t make the cut.
