ZachTheZip
http://pr-canada.net/index.php?option=com_...0&Itemid=58 Will be announced may 20th at the stadium. How did Can't get into the final 5 without an engineering school?

ZachTheZip
How did Can't get into the final 5 without an engineering school? Architecture program. I'll take a practical, solid bridge designed by an Akron engineer over something drawn up to look pretty by an architect from Can't any day. I would be surprised is Ted Curtis approves a Ken+ designed bridge. Actually, I would be pissed.

zip37
Maybe they were sponsored by the Ohio National Guard.
Jake
bridges mean very little in the big scheme of things. Akron in general and the university need to stop making a big deal over something that adds little to a campus and community. this is another shell game

ZachTheZip
This bridge will be unique. The only thing like it in the world. It's also a chance for UA to get further into the materials engineering world beyond polymers, and a good object for the corrosion engineering program to study over time. Yea right, they said the same thing about E.J. Thomas Hall and that was one of the biggest pigs-in-a-poke UA ever tried to sell. Ain't buying today, sorry! RowdyZip
I try to stay quiet on the Jake front, but seriously? Reading this page shows Jake to simply be a troll in a Zips hat. Don't feed him/it. Hope one of the UA teams wins it, having a great engineering school and 2 of the 5 finalists should give us a good chance.
ZachTheZip
This article has pictures. Judging by the captions, the author is a Miami grad. I'm also not sure why the bridge ends on top of the awning of the hotel entrance. How do you get down? Unless the Can't design has windows, it turns into a pitch-black tube. Not exactly pedestrian-friendly. I don't know what to say about Ball State's design except that it doesn't really blend in well with current campus architecture (or any other architectural style I've ever seen, for that matter). I think they should be disqualified for referring to us as "Akron University". I want to see UA's designs, but they didn't bother to include them. I noticed the Akron University thing too, it's awful. Honestly all three of these designs are strange. I don't really like the idea of another school winning either, and I really hope UA's entry wins. Why couldn't they just have all 5 entries come from UA? Lack of attention to detail is a big deal in engineering and architecture. The University of Ball have surely removed themselves from the winning entry. They will be announcing first and second place on May 20th and didn't show two of the designs.......................................! UA Fan
CWRU and Purdue didn't make the cut but something tells me they probably didn't bring their A teams to the contest..
Dr Z
From a purely aesthetic point of view, I like the movement of Miami's design given the three choices.
ZachTheZip
Akron's Blue team wins the competition. I like the design. Simple, functional, and it harkens to other pedestrian bridges in Akron like the John S Knight Center one and the one on University Avenue that connects Polsky to the the city parking deck. I agree, of the five designs the winning entry has a look that is cohesive to current campus architecture. While costing wasn't part of the competition, I have to think that the UA Blue team's design would be the least expensive design. Can't and Ball State called for a lot of "non structural" titanium. Since the idea behind the bridge is more of a proof of concept, you don't really want it to be a $30 million dollar bridge (which from the looks of the Can't, Miami, and Ball State entries it very well could have been). Congrats to the UA Blue team, and let's see this thing get built.
Dr Z
I liked Akron's gold team model the best. Blue team was not a bad choice. I don't know all the details, I'm only going off of two photos. Gold Team Blue Team (winner) The winning team members, Brian McGannon, Brett Klinger, Donna Orellana and Mark Andrasik, each will receive $5,000 to apply toward their tuition. Good move by the university. I wish they would handle some marketing in the football department like this in the graphic design program. Zipsrifle
Acutually, I like the Can't State one the best, Miami 2nd and the UA gold 3rd. I have to agree with others, however, that cost probably come into consideration. These Can't, Miami, BSU designs were beautiful but would have cost more than ICS to build. I also have to believe that "Akron University" on the BSU one killed it. I mean, come on, we're in your conference and you can't get our name right? RootforRoo44
Can't say i like any of them besides the one that won. The UA Gold has to be the worst one as well. Seems like everyone has a different favorite in this thing.
