They need someone that can keep the momentum going that was created (obvious statement).

Search for Thomas' replacement will be national

University of Akron president Dr. Luis Proenza said the work done by outgoing athletic director Mike Thomas has made the job more attractive for the person who succeeds him.

Proenza said a national search is beginning to find a replacement for Thomas, who will continue his work in Akron until December.

``We want to identify the very best talent that's out there, wherever that might be,'' Proenza said. ``The fairest way to put it is that we hope to have someone as soon as possible. It could happen in a matter of days and sometimes it takes a little longer. I hope we can have someone by the beginning of the year.''

Last week, Thomas accepted the athletic director's position at the University of Cincinnati. He starts there on Dec. 1.

``Mike is a good person and deserves a chance to move to a larger institution,'' Proenza said. ``What he's left and the legacy he's left will make us much more attractive for other people like Mike to come here.

``Mike has taken the athletic program to a new level of excellence. He has a very good eye for coaching talent and talent that supports the athletic program. Look what's happened in football and basketball. These have been great hires.''

Proenza was referring to football coach J.D. Brookhart and men's basketball coach Keith Dambrot, two hires made by Thomas during his six years heading the department.

I vote for Terry Pluto. I LOVE his forward thinking 20K Division 1 stadium concept.

I'm sure his first coaching move would be to fire Brookhart and replace him with Lee Owens. That would be HUGE.

Next: Fire Dambrot and bring in Knute Larsen as basketball coach.

Hiring Pluto could be the best move The University of Akron has ever made. And, it could be crippling to Mount Union and Ashland.
