Big Zip
So I have yet to send in my check for my tickets. As we continue to get small bits of information about the football program (texting incident, now the football outing going away) it appears the program has a general lack of interest in the fans. I've also heard from some others closer to the source than I that the new regime isn't the most enjoyable group to work with. It all makes it harder to write the check....though I most likely will. Has everyone on here sent there checks in already? Am I the last hold out looking at the 6/19 deadline as i approaches? Should I be concerned that we've went from a guy I wasn't sure could do the job, to a group I can't even form an opinion about.
GP1
IMNHO, the number one reason (there are many reasons) to renew tickets is an answer to the following question. Am I entertained by the product I see on the field and is that enough entertainment value to spend my hard earned money on? If the answer is yes, then renew. If the answer is no, some of you may have some thinking to do. A college football game is a huge investment in mostly time so you at least want to be entertained by what you are going to spend a day doing. I think it is stupid that they are not having fan interaction outings such as the golf outing, but that is a side issue compared to whether or not one finds the product entertaining. If I still lived in Ohio, I would have season tickets this coming season. I am entertained by going to the games regardless of the ability of the team to win, regardless of who is the AD and regardless of my concerns about the philosophy of the new coach. I like watching D-1 college football and anything lower than the MAC I would not spend my money on.
Captain Kangaroo
So I have yet to send in my check for my tickets. Should I be concerned that we've went from a guy I wasn't sure could do the job, to a group I can't even form an opinion about. I bought my tickets already. In the ghetto (standard reserved) and only 4 of them. Like you BZ, have followed all the Zips athletic programs faithfully for multiple decades. The way I look at it... you really can't let one guy, or one regime, or a set of inane policies destroy your faith in UA athletics. I'll have a great time this upcoming fall/spring following the Zips programs regardless of whatever misguided or ignorant policies are enacted. I can't let The Man get me down. I still haven't had a chance to form an opinion on the new football staff. I met Ianello at the Cadillac Ranch. He wasn't very personable, but did speak to me for about 5 minutes. He's definitely more business-like than JD, but I don't know that it means he's an a-hole. And like GP1 said - Ianello can be a raging a-hole if he wants...as long as he wins. Did Ianello f-up a text message? Sure. Who gives a rat's ass? That's the most minor thing in the world. If we beat Syracuse, no one will ever remember it. Or if they do, they'll be laughing about it. If we go 2-10 this year, no one will remember it either. There will be bigger concerns than texting. I met with Coach Latina for a few minutes too. He seems like a great guy. I sent, and subsequently re-sent an email to the football staff asking for a chance to meet with them and build a relationship with ZipsNation. I guess I'll need to re-re-send it. To date...it has been ignored. That irks me... especially when other UA programs, and previous staffs have welcomed the opportunity to spread information and good news regarding their respective programs. Buy your tickets and bring the family to the games. Even though they don't realize it -- The University needs us "good fans," who have invested with our wallets and our hearts. And I'll need company in Ghetto Lot #999 (next to Luigi's dumptster).
Big Zip
I appreciate the responses. I'm going to send my check in, but I'm starting to wonder when a person just gives up? I've given up on the Indians....I even lowered my cable package so I wasn't paying for STO because I don't want to support the Dolans. This teams has been so bad and I want them at the very least to give me a reason to not stop rooting for them. I'm not saying I am prepared to become an apathetic fan like the majority of Akron alums, but am I really the stupid one for paying to see the crap they put on the field every year? GP1 I am still enjoying my day when I go to the games, but the funny thing is it has little to do with the product on the field and more to do with the tailgate. I can drink beer, grill and play corn hole at my house though....
uhgrad2002
I sent my renewal in shortly after sales started. I go to support the school, but more than that, I go because I enjoy going to games. (I even go to an occasional game at that school over east for the same reason.) There are more ways to support the school than there is time and money to do it all (volleyball, for one), so I think you have to enjoy what you are doing while you are supporting. A losing team would not necessarily cause me to find something else to do. A program that operates in embarrasing ways would. A program that is too full of "characters" would. Prices that got too high or procedures that got too cumbersome would. I have pretty much stopped following the Indians in part because I was so discouraged after 2007 but more because I grew tired of free agents leaving, because the drive to Cleveland and the late nights got tiresome and because I have so many other things to do. There are things that I think the program, any program, can and must do to hold on to fans, especially when the team struggles. Pay attention to details (words to the alma mater and scores of other games on the scoreboard, have a real team shop, for instance), have a web site that is promptly updated, have an enthusiastic staff. Also, be consistent and enduring. I the impression that too many things get tried and forgotten about.
