A very good read. Lots and lots of history there.

Anybody who was not a Zips fan before the JAR was built needs to see this to understand just what we are losing when the bulldozers roll through this fall.

Thanks. That was great seeing those old pictures. I was fortunate enough to be in college just before the transition to JAR. I guess to some of the younger fans, it's probably difficult to image Rhodes Arena being considered a "major upgrade" in facilities. But, it sure was.

It's going to be a bittersweet moment when they finally tear it down. The space is badly needed in the campuses "landlocked" environment. I hope they find a way to preserve the history of the place, maybe with a glass display in the new building with artifacts and stories, kind of like the glass case in the student union behind Starbucks.

Haha. For me, I say bring on those bulldozers. I wasn't around for all the historical stuff. I mean that's cool, but I worked out in that gym a ton last summer with Cedrick Middleton. It doesn't have A/C so we were dieing the whole time haha. It's a cool building though, not gonna lie. I'm glad it had its history.

My question to you lilroodude, when isn't Ceddy working out in some way? As an undergrad I'd see him in the rec just about every day after his eligibility ran out... Although, as a grad student I've seen him there a lot less... Wait... Oh yeah, I've been slacking recently...

I'm fine with Memorial going and getting pushed under too though. It was built in the 50's, it's not like it's some precious artifact, heck, my junior high was built in the 20's. Although don't think for a second I didn't grab a set of seats from Memorial, Zips Basketball really does have quite an extended history and I'm glad I have a part of the place that they called home during some of their great moments. It will make a proud piece of my household.

Also, I own the book that came out for Zips football, but who is going to compile the pages for Akron's contribution to Dr. Naismith's amazing invention? I wish I had the time to do this one myself because I think if done the right way a book about our hoops history would be a pretty sensational thing (I'd help in the effort any way that I could, however).

That's a great idea; I'd buy it!

Maybe they can get Huggy to write a piece for it while he recovers.

My favorite memory was Larry Quarles hitting a basket jusi inside the corner at the south end of the court. it glaced off the backboard an went in jus as the buzzer ended the game, we won by 1 or 2 pts. From where he shot it, it was BEHIND the basket & backboard. An AMAZING shot

IIRC, the first Zips sporting event I ever watched was a Joe Jakubick game at Memorial. I wandered around in there a few other times but never really developed any special attachment to the place. If they ever replaced the JAR I would be a little more sentimental for all the times I've watched games in there.

I was there when some of those pictures were taken!

I personally replaced that piece of crap diving board the young lovelies are on with a Duroflex board in 1968.

Which I guess makes us classmates. At least, we were in class at the same time. Do the name Dr. Sam Shelby ring a bell?

How about Artie Romedo?

Old Sam musta made a fortune using his book for the class. [Which I failed].

I had that class in an auditorium on TV at 8AM

They gave us the test to take home on Thursday, then gave us the same test on Friday.

I didn't pass either.

Did get some of the best sleep of my life.

That building sure was tough. Over a year since they started tearing it down, and they still don't have it completely gone...
